Passage 1: Numbers 32
(Num 32:1) Nowe the children of Reuben, and the children of Gad had an exceeding great multitude of cattell: and they sawe the lande of Iazer, and the lande of Gilead, that it was an apt place for cattel.
(Notes Reference) Now the children of (a) Reuben and the children of Gad had a very great multitude of cattle: and when they saw the land of Jazer, and the land of (b) Gilead, that, behold, the place [was] a place for cattle;
(a) Reuben came from Leah, and Gad from Zilpah her handmaid.
(b) Which was named for the heap of stones that Jacob made as a sign of the covenant between him and Laban in (Gen 31:47).
(Num 32:2) Then the children of Gad, and the childre of Reuben came, and spake vnto Moses and to Eleazar the Priest, and vnto the princes of the Congregation, saying,
(Num 32:3) The land of Ataroth, and Dibon, and Iazer, and Nimrah, and Heshbon, and Elealeh, and Shebam, and Nebo, and Beon,
(Num 32:4) Which countrey the Lord smote before the Congregation of Israel, is a lande meete for cattell, and thy seruants haue cattell:
(Num 32:5) Wherefore, said they, if we haue foud grace in thy sight, let this lande be giuen vnto thy seruants for a possession, and bring vs not ouer Iorde.
(Num 32:6) And Moses said vnto the children of Gad, and to the children of Reuben, Shall your brethren goe to warre, and ye tary heere?
(Num 32:7) Wherefore now discourage ye the heart of the children of Israel, to goe ouer into the lande, which the Lord hath giuen them?
(Num 32:8) Thus did your fathers when I sent them from Kadesh-barnea to see the lande.
(Num 32:9) For when they went vp euen vnto the riuer of Eshcol, and sawe the land: they discouraged the heart of the childre of Israel, that they woulde not goe into the lande, which the Lord had giuen them.
(Num 32:10) And the Lordes wrath was kindled the same day, and he did sweare, saying,
(Num 32:11) None of the men that came out of Egypt from twentie yeere olde and aboue, shall see the land for the which I sware vnto Abraham, to Izhak, and to Iaakob, because they haue not wholly followed me:
(Num 32:12) Except Caleb the sonne of Iephunneh the Kenesite, and Ioshua the sonne of Nun: for they haue constantly followed the Lord.
(Num 32:13) And the Lord was very angry with Israel, and made them wander in the wildernesse fourty yeeres, vntill all the generation that had done euill in the sight of the Lord were consumed.
(Notes Reference) And the LORD'S anger was kindled against Israel, and he made them wander in the wilderness forty years, until all the generation, that had done (c) evil in the sight of the LORD, was consumed.
(c) Because they complained and would not believe their report, which told the truth concerning the land.
(Num 32:14) And behold, ye are risen vp in your fathers steade as an encrease of sinfull men, still to augment the fierce wrath of the Lord, toward Israel.
(Num 32:15) For if ye turne away from following him, he will yet againe leaue the people in the wildernesse, and ye shall destroy all this folke.
(Notes Reference) For if ye turn away from after him, he will yet again leave them in the wilderness; and (d) ye shall destroy all this people.
(d) By your occasion.
(Num 32:16) And they went neere to him, and said, We will builde sheepe foldes here for our sheepe, and for our cattell, and cities for our children.
(Num 32:17) But we our selues will be readie armed to go before the children of Israel, vntill we haue brought them vnto their place: but our childre shall dwell in the defenced cities, because of the inhabitants of the lande.
(Notes Reference) But we ourselves will go ready armed before the children of Israel, until we have brought them unto their (e) place: and our little ones shall dwell in the fenced cities because of the inhabitants of the land.
(e) In the land of Canaan.
(Num 32:18) We will not returne vnto our houses, vntil the children of Israel haue inherited, euery man his inheritance.
(Num 32:19) Neither wil we inherite with them beyond Iorden and on that side, because our inheritance is fallen to vs on this side Iorden Eastwarde.
(Num 32:20) And Moses saide vnto them, If ye will doe this thing, and goe armed before the Lord to warre:
(Notes Reference) And Moses said unto them, If ye will do this thing, if ye will go (f) armed before the LORD to war,
(f) Before the Ark of the Lord.
(Num 32:21) And will goe euery one of you in harnesse ouer Iorden before the Lord, vntill he hath cast out his enemies from his sight:
(Notes Reference) And will go all of you armed over Jordan before the LORD, until he hath driven out his (g) enemies from before him,
(g) That is, the inhabitants of the land.
(Num 32:22) And vntill the land be subdued before the Lord, then ye shall returne and be innocent toward the Lord, and toward Israel: and this land shalbe your possession before the Lord.
(Notes Reference) And the land be subdued before the LORD: then afterward ye shall return, and be guiltless before the LORD, and before Israel; and this land shall be your possession (h) before the LORD.
(h) The Lord will grant you this land which you request, (Jos 1:15).
(Num 32:23) But if ye will not doe so, beholde, ye haue sinned against the Lord, and be sure, that your sinne will finde you out.
(Notes Reference) But if ye will not do so, behold, ye have sinned against the LORD: and be sure your sin (i) will find you out.
(i) You shall assuredly be punished for your sin.
(Num 32:24) Builde you then cities for your children and folds for your sheepe, and do that ye haue spoke.
(Num 32:25) Then the children of Gad and the children of Reuben spake vnto Moses, saying, Thy seruats will doe as my lorde commandeth:
(Num 32:26) Our childre, our wiues, our sheepe, and al our cattell shall remaine there in the cities of Gilead,
(Num 32:27) But thy seruants will goe euery one armed to warre before the Lord for to fight, as my lorde saith.
(Num 32:28) So concerning them, Moses commanded Eleazar the Priest, and Ioshua the sonne of Nun, and the chiefe fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel:

(k) Moses gave charge that his promise made to the Reubenites, and other, would be performed after his death so that they would not break theirs.
(Num 32:29) And Moses said vnto them, If the children of Gad, and the children of Reuben, will go with you ouer Iorden, all armed to fight before the Lord, then when the land is subdued before you, ye shall giue the the lad of Gilead for a possessio:
(Num 32:30) But if they will not goe ouer with you armed, then they shall haue their possessions amog you in the land of Canaan.
(Num 32:31) And the children of Gad, and the children of Reuben answered, saying, As the Lord hath said vnto thy seruants, so will we doe.
(Notes Reference) And the children of Gad and the children of Reuben answered, saying, As the (l) LORD hath said unto thy servants, so will we do.
(l) This is attributed to the Lord, which his messenger speaks.
(Num 32:32) We will goe armed before the Lord into the lande of Canaan: that the possession of our inheritance may be to vs on this side Iorden.
(Num 32:33) So Moses gaue vnto them, euen to the children of Gad, and to the children of Reuben, and to halfe the tribe of Manasseh the sonne of Ioseph, the kingdome of Sihon King of the Amorites, and the kingdome of Og King of Bashan, the lande with the cities thereof and coastes, euen the cities of the countrey round about.
(Notes Reference) And Moses gave unto them, [even] to the children of Gad, and to the children of Reuben, and unto half the tribe of Manasseh the son of Joseph, the kingdom of Sihon king of the (m) Amorites, and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, the land, with the cities thereof in the coasts, [even] the cities of the country round about.
(m) The Amorites dwelled on both sides of Jordan: but here he makes mention of them that dwelt on this side: (Jos 10:12) he speaks of them that inhabited beyond Jordan.
(Num 32:34) Then the children of Gad built Dibon, and Ataroth, and Aroer,
(Num 32:35) And Atroth, Shophan, and Iazer, and Iogbehah,
(Num 32:36) And Beth-nimrah, and Beth-haran, defenced cities: also sheepe foldes.
(Num 32:37) And the children of Reuben built Heshbon, and Elealeh, and Kiriathaim,
(Num 32:38) And Nebo, and Baal-meon, and turned their names, and Shibmah: and gaue other names vnto the cities which they built.
(Num 32:39) And the children of Machir the sonne of Manasseh went to Gilead, and tooke it, and put out the Amorites that dwelt therein.
(Num 32:40) Then Moses gaue Gilead vnto Machir the sonne of Manasseh, and he dwelt therein.
(Num 32:41) And Iair the sonne of Manasseh went and tooke the small townes thereof, and called them Hauoth Iair.

(Num 32:42) Also Nobah went and tooke Kenath, with the villages thereof and called it Nobah, after his owne name.
Passage 2: Proverbs 23
(Pro 23:1) When thou sittest to eate with a ruler, consider diligently what is before thee,
(Notes Reference) When thou sittest to eat with a ruler, (a) consider diligently what [is] before thee:
(a) Eat with sobriety.
(Pro 23:2) And put the knife to thy throte, if thou be a man giuen to the appetite.
(Notes Reference) (b) And put a knife to thy throat, if thou [art] a man given to appetite.
(b) Bridle your appetite, as if by force and violence.
(Pro 23:3) Be not desirous of his deintie meates: for it is a deceiuable meate.
(Notes Reference) Be not desirous of his dainties: (c) for they [are] deceitful food.
(c) For often the rich when they bid their inferiors to their tables, it is not for the love they bear them, but for their own secret purposes.
(Pro 23:4) Trauaile not too much to be rich: but cease from thy wisdome.
(Notes Reference) Labour not to be rich: cease from thy own (d) wisdom.
(d) Bestow not the gifts that God has given you, to get worldly riches.
(Pro 23:5) Wilt thou cast thine eyes vpon it, which is nothing? for riches taketh her to her wings, as an eagle, and flyeth into the heauen.
(Pro 23:6) Eate thou not the bread of him that hath an euil eye, neither desire his deintie meates.

(e) That is, covetous, as contrary a good eye is taken for liberal as in (Pro 22:9).
(Pro 23:7) For as though he thought it in his heart, so will hee say vnto thee, Eate and drinke: but his heart is not with thee.
(Pro 23:8) Thou shalt vomit thy morsels that thou hast eaten, and thou shalt lose thy sweete wordes.
(Notes Reference) The (f) morsel [which] thou hast eaten shalt thou vomit up, and lose thy sweet words.
(f) He will not cease till he has done you some harm, and his flattering words will come to no use.
(Pro 23:9) Speake not in the eares of a foole: for hee will despise the wisdome of thy wordes.
(Pro 23:10) Remooue not the ancient boundes, and enter not into the fieldes of the fatherlesse.
(Pro 23:11) For he that redeemeth them, is mightie: he will defend their cause against thee.
(Pro 23:12) Apply thine heart to instruction, and thine eares to the wordes of knowledge.
(Pro 23:13) Withhold not correction from the childe: if thou smite him with the rodde, he shall not die.
(Pro 23:14) Thou shalt smite him with the rodde, and shalt deliuer his soule from hell.

(g) That is, from destruction.
(Pro 23:15) My sonne, if thine heart be wise, mine heart shall reioyce, and I also.
(Pro 23:16) And my reynes shall reioyce, when thy lips speake righteous things.
(Pro 23:17) Let not thine heart bee enuious against sinners: but let it bee in the feare of the Lord continually.
(Pro 23:18) For surely there is an ende, and thy hope shall not be cut off.

(h) The prosperity of the wicked will not continue.
(Pro 23:19) O thou my sonne, heare, and bee wise, and guide thine heart in the way.

(i) In the observation of God's commandments.
(Pro 23:20) Keepe not company with drunkards, nor with gluttons.
(Pro 23:21) For the drunkard and the glutton shall bee poore, and the sleeper shalbe clothed with ragges.
(Pro 23:22) Obey thy father that hath begotten thee, and despise not thy mother when she is olde.
(Pro 23:23) Bye the trueth, but sell it not: likewise wisdome, and instruction, and vnderstanding.
(Notes Reference) Buy (k) the truth, and sell [it] not; [also] wisdom, and instruction, and understanding.
(k) Spare no cost for truths sake, neither depart from it for any gain.
(Pro 23:24) The father of the righteous shall greatly reioyce, and hee that begetteth a wise childe, shall haue ioy of him.
(Pro 23:25) Thy father and thy mother shall be glad, and she that bare thee shall reioyce.
(Pro 23:26) My sonne, giue mee thine heart, and let thine eyes delite in my wayes.

(l) Give yourself wholly to wisdom.
(Pro 23:27) For a whore is as a deepe ditche, and a strange woman is as a narrowe pitte.
(Pro 23:28) Also she lyeth in wait as for a praye, and she increaseth the transgressers among men.

(m) She seduces many and causes them to offend God.
(Pro 23:29) To whome is woe? to whome is sorowe? to whom is strife? to whom is murmuring? to whom are woundes without cause? and to whome is the rednesse of the eyes?
(Pro 23:30) Euen to them that tarie long at the wine, to them that goe, and seeke mixt wine.
(Notes Reference) They that tarry long at the wine; they that go (n) to seek mixed wine.
(n) Who by art make wine stronger and more pleasant.
(Pro 23:31) Looke not thou vpon the wine, when it is red, and when it sheweth his colour in the cup, or goeth downe pleasantly.
(Pro 23:32) In the ende thereof it will bite like a serpent, and hurt like a cockatrise.
(Pro 23:33) Thine eyes shall looke vpon strange women, and thine heart shall speake lewde things.
(Notes Reference) Thy (o) eyes shall behold strange women, and thy heart shall utter perverse things.
(o) That is, drunkenness will bring you to whoredom.
(Pro 23:34) And thou shalt bee as one that sleepeth in the middes of the sea, and as hee that sleepeth in the toppe of the maste.
(Notes Reference) And thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the (p) sea, or as he that lieth upon the top of a mast.
(p) In such great danger will you be.
(Pro 23:35) They haue stricken mee, shalt thou say, but I was not sicke: they haue beaten mee, but I knew not, when I awoke: therefore will I seeke it yet still.

(q) Though drunkenness makes them more insensible then beasts, yet they can not refrain.
Passage 3: John 5
(Joh 5:1) After that, there was a feast of the Iewes, and Iesus went vp to Hierusalem.
(Joh 5:2) And there is at Hierusalem by the place of the sheepe, a poole called in Ebrew Bethesda, hauing fiue porches:
(Notes Reference) (1) Now there is at Jerusalem by the sheep [market] a (a) pool, which is called in the Hebrew tongue (b) Bethesda, having five porches.
(1) There is no disease so old which Christ cannot heal.
(a) Of which cattle drank, and used to be plunged in, since there was a great abundance of water at Jerusalem.
(b) That is to say, the house of pouring out, because a great abundance of water was poured out into that place.
(Joh 5:3) In the which lay a great multitude of sicke folke, of blinde, halte, and withered, wayting for the mouing of the water.
(Joh 5:4) For an Angel went downe at a certaine season into the poole, and troubled the water: whosoeuer then first, after the stirring of the water, stepped in, was made whole of whatsoeuer disease he had.
(Joh 5:5) And a certaine man was there, which had bene diseased eight and thirtie yeeres.
(Joh 5:6) When Iesus sawe him lie, and knew that he nowe long time had bene diseased, he saide vnto him, Wilt thou be made whole?
(Joh 5:7) The sicke man answered him, Sir, I haue no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the poole: but while I am comming, another steppeth downe before me.
(Joh 5:8) Iesus said vnto him, Rise: take vp thy bed, and walke.
(Joh 5:9) And immediatly the man was made whole, and tooke vp his bed, and walked: and the same day was the Sabbath.
(Joh 5:10) The Iewes therefore said to him that was made whole, It is the Sabbath day: it is not lawfull for thee to cary thy bed.
(Notes Reference) (2) The Jews therefore said unto him that was cured, It is the sabbath day: it is not lawful for thee to carry [thy] bed.
(2) True religion is assaulted most cruelly by the pretence of religion itself.
(Joh 5:11) He answered them, He that made me whole, he said vnto me, Take vp thy bed, and walke.
(Joh 5:12) Then asked they him, What man is that which said vnto thee, Take vp thy bed and walke?
(Joh 5:13) And he that was healed, knewe not who it was: for Iesus had conueied himselfe away from the multitude that was in that place.
(Joh 5:14) And after that, Iesus founde him in the Temple, and said vnto him, Beholde, thou art made whole: sinne no more, lest a worse thing come vnto thee.
(Joh 5:15) The man departed and tolde the Iewes that it was Iesus, which had made him whole.
(Joh 5:16) And therefore the Iewes did persecute Iesus, and sought to slay him, because he had done these things on the Sabbath day.
(Joh 5:17) But Iesus answered them, My Father worketh hitherto, and I worke.

(3) The work of God was never the breach of the sabbath, and the works of Christ are the works of the Father, both because they are one God, and also because the Father does not work except in the Son.
(Joh 5:18) Therefore the Iewes sought the more to kill him: not onely because he had broken the Sabbath: but said also that God was his Father, and made himselfe equall with God.
(Notes Reference) Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was (c) his Father, making himself equal with God.
(c) That is, his alone and no one else's, which they gather from his saying, "And I work", applying this word "work" to himself which properly belongs to God, and therefore makes himself equal to God.
(Joh 5:19) Then answered Iesus, and said vnto them, Verely, verely I say vnto you, The Sonne can doe nothing of himselfe, saue that he seeth the Father doe: for whatsoeuer things he doth, the same things doeth the Sonne in like maner.
(Notes Reference) Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing (d) of himself, but what he (e) seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son (f) likewise.
(d) Not only without his Father's authority, but also without his mighty working and power.
(e) This must be understood of the person of Christ, which consists of two natures, and not simply of his Godhead: so then he says that his Father moves and governs him in all things, but yet nonetheless, when he says he works with his Father, he confirms his Godhead.
(f) In like sort, jointly and together. Not because the Father does some things, and then the Son works after him and does the same, but because the might and power of the Father and the Son work equally and jointly together.
(Joh 5:20) For the Father loueth the Sonne, and sheweth him all things, whatsoeuer he himselfe doeth, and he will shewe him greater workes then these, that ye should marueile.
(Joh 5:21) For likewise as the Father rayseth vp the dead, and quickeneth them, so the Sonne quickeneth whom he will.
(Notes Reference) (4) For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth [them]; even so the Son quickeneth whom he will.
(4) The Father makes no man partaker of everlasting life except in Christ, in whom alone also he is truly worshipped.
(Joh 5:22) For the Father iudgeth no man, but hath committed all iudgement vnto the Sonne,
(Notes Reference) For the Father (g) judgeth (h) no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son:
(g) This word "judgeth" is taken by the figure of speech synecdoche to represent all governing.
(h) These words are not to be taken as though they simply denied that God governed the world, but rather they deny that he governed as the Jews imagined it, who separate the Father from the Son, whereas indeed, the Father does not govern the world, but only in the person of his Son, being made manifest in the flesh: so he says below in (Joh 5:30), that he came not to do his own will: that his doctrine is not his own, that the blind man and his parents did not sin (Joh 7:16; Joh 9:3), etc.
(Joh 5:23) Because that all men shoulde honour the Sonne, as they honour the Father: he that honoureth not the Sonne, the same honoureth not the Father, which hath sent him.
(Joh 5:24) Verely, verely I say vnto you, he that heareth my worde, and beleeueth him that sent me, hath euerlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation, but hath passed from death vnto life.
(Notes Reference) (5) Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.
(5) The Father is not worshipped except by his Son's word apprehended by faith, which is the only way that leads to eternal life.
(Joh 5:25) Verely, verely I say vnto you, the houre shall come, and now is, when the dead shall heare the voyce of the Sonne of God: and they that heare it, shall liue.
(Notes Reference) (6) Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live.
(6) We are all dead in sin and cannot be made alive by any other means, except by the word of Christ apprehended by faith.
(Joh 5:26) For as the Father hath life in himselfe, so likewise hath he giuen to the Sonne to haue life in himselfe,
(Joh 5:27) And hath giuen him power also to execute iudgement, in that he is the Sonne of man.
(Notes Reference) And hath given him (i) authority to execute judgment also, because he is (k) the Son of man.
(i) That is, high and sovereign power to rule and govern all things, in so much that he has power over life and death.
(k) That is, he will not only judge the world as he is God, but also as he is man, he received this from his Father, to be judge of the world.
(Joh 5:28) Marueile not at this: for the houre shall come, in the which all that are in the graues, shall heare his voyce.
(Notes Reference) (7) Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice,
(7) All will eventually appear before the judgment seat of Christ to be judged.
(Joh 5:29) And they shall come foorth, that haue done good, vnto ye resurrection of life: but they that haue done euil, vnto the resurrection of condemnation.
(Notes Reference) (8) And shall come (l) forth; they that have done good, unto the (m) resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.
(8) Faith and infidelity will be judged by their fruits.

(m) To that resurrection which has everlasting life following it: against which is set the resurrection of condemnation, that is, which is followed by condemnation.
(Joh 5:30) I can doe nothing of mine owne selfe: as I heare, I iudge: and my iudgement is iust, because I seeke not mine owne will, but the will of the Father who hath sent me.
(Notes Reference) (9) I can (n) of mine own self do nothing: (o) as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me.
(9) The Father is the author and approver of all things which Christ does.

(Joh 5:31) If I should beare witnesse of my selfe, my witnesse were not true.
(Notes Reference) If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not (p) true.
(p) Faithful, that is, worthy to be credited; see (Joh 8:14).
(Joh 5:32) There is another that beareth witnesse of me, and I know that the witnesse, which he beareth of me, is true.
(Joh 5:33) Ye sent vnto Iohn, and he bare witnesse vnto the trueth.
(Notes Reference) (10) Ye sent unto John, and he bare witness unto the truth.
(10) Christ is declared to be the only Saviour by John's voice, and infinite miracles, and by the testimonies of all the prophets. But the world, being addicted to false prophets, and desirous to seem religious, does not see any of these things.
(Joh 5:34) But I receiue not the record of man: neuerthelesse these things I say, that ye might be saued.
(Joh 5:35) He was a burning, and a shining candle: and ye would for a season haue reioyced in his light.

(q) A little while.
(Joh 5:36) But I haue greater witnesse then the witnesse of Iohn: for the workes which the Father hath giuen me to finish, the same workes that I doe, beare witnesse of me, that the Father sent me.
(Joh 5:37) And the Father himselfe, which hath sent me, beareth witnesse of me. Ye haue not heard his voyce at any time, neither haue ye seene his shape.
(Joh 5:38) And his worde haue you not abiding in you: for whom he hath sent, him ye beleeued not.
(Joh 5:39) Searche the Scriptures: for in them ye thinke to haue eternall life, and they are they which testifie of me.
(Joh 5:40) But ye will not come to me, that ye might haue life.
(Joh 5:41) I receiue not the prayse of men.
(Joh 5:42) But I know you, that ye haue not the loue of God in you.

(Joh 5:43) I am come in my Fathers Name, and ye receiue me not: if another shall come in his owne name, him will ye receiue.
(Joh 5:44) How can ye beleeue, which receiue honour one of another, and seeke not the honour that commeth of God alone?
(Joh 5:45) Doe not thinke that I will accuse you to my Father: there is one that accuseth you, euen Moses, in whom ye trust.

(s) This denial does not set aside that which is said here, but corrects it, as if Christ said, the most severe accuser the Jews will have is Moses, not him.
(Joh 5:46) For had ye beleeued Moses, ye would haue beleeued me: for he wrote of me.
(Joh 5:47) But if ye beleeue not his writings, how shall ye beleeue my wordes?
