Passage 1: 1 Kings 9
(1Ki 9:1) When Salomon had finished the building of the house of ye Lord, and the kings palace, and all that Salomon desired and minded to do,
(1Ki 9:2) Then the Lord appeared vnto Salomon the second time, as he appeared vnto him at Gibeon.
(1Ki 9:3) And the Lord sayd vnto him, I haue heard thy prayer and thy supplication, that thou hast made before me: I haue halowed this house (which thou hast built) to put my Name there for euer, and mine eyes, and mine heart shall be there perpetually.
(1Ki 9:4) And if thou wilt walke before mee (as Dauid thy father walked in purenesse of heart and in righteousnesse) to doe according to al that I haue commanded thee, and keepe my statutes, and my iudgements,
(Notes Reference) And (a) if thou wilt walk before me, as David thy father walked, in integrity of heart, and in uprightness, to do according to all that I have commanded thee, [and] wilt keep my statutes and my judgments:
(a) If you walk in my fear, and withdraw yourself from the common manner of men, who follow their sensualities.
(1Ki 9:5) Then will I stablish the throne of thy kingdome vpon Israel for euer, as I promised to Dauid thy father, saying, Thou shalt not want a man vpon the throne of Israel.
(1Ki 9:6) But if ye and your children turne away from mee, and wil not keepe my commandements, and my statutes (which I haue set before you) but go and serue other gods, and worship them,
(Notes Reference) [But] if ye shall at all turn from following me, ye or your children, and will (b) not keep my commandments [and] my statutes which I have set before you, but go and serve other gods, and worship them:
(b) God declares that disobedience against him, is the cause of his displeasure, and so of all misery.
(1Ki 9:7) Then will I cutte off Israel from the lande, which I haue giuen them, and the house which I haue halowed for my Name, will I cast out of my sight, and Israel shall be a prouerbe, and a common talke among all people.
(Notes Reference) Then will I cut off Israel out of the land which I have given them; and this house, which I have hallowed for my name, will I cast out of my sight; and Israel shall be a (c) proverb and a byword among all people:
(c) The world will make a mockery of you for the vile contempt and abusing of God's most liberal benefit.
(1Ki 9:8) Euen this hie house shall bee so: euery one that passeth by it, shalbe astonied, and shall hisse, and they shall say, Why hath the Lord done thus vnto this land and to this house?
(1Ki 9:9) And they shall answere, Because they forsooke the Lord their God, which brought their fathers out of the land of Egypt, and haue taken holde vpon other gods, and haue worshipped them, and serued them, therfore hath the Lord brought vpon them all this euill.
(1Ki 9:10) And at the ende of twentie yeeres, when Salomon had buylded the two houses, the house of the Lord, and the Kings palace,
(1Ki 9:11) (For the which Hiram the King of Tyrus had brought to Salomon timber of cedar, and firre trees, and golde, and whatsoeuer he desired) then King Salomon gaue to Hiram twentie cities in the land of Galil.
(1Ki 9:12) And Hiram came out from Tyrus to see the cities which Salomon had giuen him, and they pleased him not.
(1Ki 9:13) Therefore hee sayde, What cities are these which thou hast giuen me, my brother? And hee called them the land of Cabul vnto this day.
(1Ki 9:14) And Hiram had sent the King sixe score talents of gold.

(d) For his tribute toward the building.
(e) The common talent was about 60 pound weight.
(1Ki 9:15) And this is the cause of the tribute why King Salomon raised tribute, to wit, to builde the house of the Lord, and his owne house, and Millo, and the wall of Ierusalem, and Hazor, and Megiddo, and Gezer.
(Notes Reference) And this [is] the reason of the levy which king Solomon raised; for to build the house of the LORD, and his own house, and (f) Millo, and the wall of Jerusalem, and Hazor, and Megiddo, and Gezer.
(f) Millo was as the town house or place of assembly which was open above.
(1Ki 9:16) Pharaoh King of Egypt had come vp, and taken Gezer, and burnt it with fire, and slew the Canaanites, that dwelt in the citie, and gaue it for a present vnto his daughter Salomons wife.
(1Ki 9:17) (Therefore Salomon builte Gezer and Beth-horon the nether,
(1Ki 9:18) And Baalath and Tamor in the wildernes of the land,
(1Ki 9:19) And all the cities of store, that Salomon had, euen cities for charets, and cities for horsemen, and all that Salomon desired and woulde build in Ierusalem, and in Lebanon and in all the land of his dominion)

(1Ki 9:20) Al the people that were left of the Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hiuites, and Iebusites, which were not of the children of Israel:
(Notes Reference) [And] all the people [that were] (h) left of the Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites, which [were] not of the children of Israel,
(h) These were as bondmen and paid what was required, either labour or money.
(1Ki 9:21) To wit, their children that were left after them in the lande, whome the children of Israel were not able to destroy, those did Salomon make tributaries vnto this day.
(1Ki 9:22) But of the children of Israel did Salomon make no bondmen: but they were men of warre and his seruants, and his princes, and his captaines, and rulers of his charets and his horsemen.
(1Ki 9:23) These were the princes of the officers, that were ouer Salomons worke: euen fiue hundreth and fiftie, and they ruled the people that wrought in the worke.
(Notes Reference) These [were] the chief of the officers that [were] over Solomon's work, (i) five hundred and fifty, which bare rule over the people that wrought in the work.
(i) The overseers of Solomon's works were divided into three parts: the first contained 3300, the second 300, and the third 250 who were Israelites. Here are the two last parts, which make 550. See (2Ch 8:10).
(1Ki 9:24) And Pharaohs daughter came vp from the citie of Dauid vnto the house which Salomon had built for her: then did he buylde Millo.
(1Ki 9:25) And thrise a yere did Salomon offer burnt offringes and peace offrings vpon the altar which he built vnto the Lord: and hee burnt incense vpon the altar that was before the Lord, when hee had finished the house.
(1Ki 9:26) Also King Salomon made a nauie of ships in Ezeon-geber, which is beside Eloth, and the brinke of the red Sea, in the land of Edom.
(1Ki 9:27) And Hiram sent with the nauie his seruats, that were mariners, and had knowledge of the sea, with the seruants of Salomon.
(1Ki 9:28) And they came to Ophir and sette from thence foure hundreth and twentie talents of gold, and brought it to King Salomon.
(Notes Reference) And they came to Ophir, and fetched from thence gold, (k) four hundred and twenty talents, and brought [it] to king Solomon.
(k) In (2Ch 8:18), 30 more are mentioned who seem to have been employed for their wages.
Passage 2: Jeremiah 35
(Jer 35:1) The worde which came vnto Ieremiah from the Lord, in the dayes of Iehoiakim the sonne of Iosiah King of Iudah, saying,
(Notes Reference) The word which came to Jeremiah from the LORD in the days (a) of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah, saying,
(a) For the disposition and order of these prophecies. See Jer 27:1
(Jer 35:2) Go vnto the house of the Rechabites, and speake vnto them, and bring them into the house of the Lord into one of the chambers, and giue them wine to drinke.
(Notes Reference) Go to the house of the (b) Rechabites, and speak to them, and bring them into the house of the LORD, into one of the chambers, and give them wine to drink.
(b) They came from Hobab, Moses father-in-law, who was no Israelite, but later joined with them in the service of God.
(Jer 35:3) Then tooke I Iaazaniah, the sonne of Ieremiah the sonne of Habazziniah, and his brethren, and all his sonnes, and the whole house of the Rechabites,
(Jer 35:4) And I brought them into the House of the Lord, into the chamber of the sonnes of Hanan, the sonne of Igdaliah a man of God, which was by the chamber of the princes, which was aboue the chamber of Maaseiah the sonne of Shallum, the keeper of the treasure.

(c) That is, a prophet.
(Jer 35:5) And I set before the sonnes of the house of the Rechabites, pots full of wine, and cuppes, and said vnto them, Drinke wine.

(d) The prophet says not. The Lord says thus, for then they ought to have obeyed, but he tends to another end: that is, to declare their obedience to man, seeing the Jews would not obey God himself.
(Jer 35:6) But they said, We will drinke no wine: for Ionadab the sonne of Rechab our father commanded vs, saying, Ye shall drinke no wine, neither you nor your sonnes for euer.
(Notes Reference) But they said, We will drink no wine: for (e) Jonadab the son of Rechab our father commanded us, saying, Ye shall drink no wine, [neither ye], nor your sons for ever:
(e) Whom the king of Israel favoured for his zeal, (2Ki 10:15).
(f) Teaching them by this to flee all opportunity for intemperancy, ambition and greed and that they might know that they were strangers in the earth, and be ready to depart at all opportunity.
(Jer 35:7) Neither shall ye build house, nor sow seede, nor plant vineyarde, nor haue any, but all your dayes ye shall dwell in tentes, that ye may liue a long time in the land where ye be strangers.
(Jer 35:8) Thus haue wee obeyed the voyce of Ionadab the sonne of Rechab our father, in all that he hath charged vs, and wee drinke no wine all our dayes, neither wee, our wiues, our sonnes, nor our daughters.
(Jer 35:9) Neither builde wee houses for vs to dwell in, neither haue we vineyard, nor fielde, nor seede,
(Jer 35:10) But we haue remained in tentes, and haue obeyed, and done according to all that Ionadab our father commanded vs.
(Notes Reference) But we have dwelt in tents, and have obeyed, and done according to (g) all that Jonadab our father commanded us.
(g) Which was now for the span of three hundred years from Jehu to Jehoiakim.
(Jer 35:11) But when Nebuchad-nezzar King of Babel came vp into the land, we said, Come, and let vs go to Ierusalem, from the hoste of the Caldeans, and from the host of Aram: so we dwel at Ierusalem.
(Notes Reference) But it came to pass, when Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came up into the land, that we said, Come, and let us go to Jerusalem for fear of the army of the Chaldeans, and for fear of the army of the Syrians: so we (h) dwell at Jerusalem.
(h) Which declares that they were not so bound to their vow that it could not be broken for any need, for where they were commanded to dwell in tents, they dwell now at Jerusalem for fear of the wars.
(Jer 35:12) Then came the word of the Lord vnto Ieremiah, saying,
(Jer 35:13) Thus saith the Lord of hostes, the God of Israel, Goe, and tell the men of Iudah, and the inhabitants of Ierusalem, Will ye not receiue doctrine to obey my wordes, saith the Lord?
(Notes Reference) Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Go and tell the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, Will (i) ye not receive instruction to hearken to my words? saith the LORD.
(i) Whom I have chosen to be my children seeing these who were the children of a heathen, obeyed the commandment of their father.
(Jer 35:14) The commandement of Ionadab the sonne of Rechab that hee commanded his sonnes, that they should drinke no wine, is surely kept: for vnto this day they drinke none, but obey their fathers commandement: notwithstanding I haue spoken vnto you, rising earely, and speaking, but ye would not obey me.
(Notes Reference) The words of Jonadab the son of Rechab, that he commanded his sons not to drink wine, are performed; for to this day they drink none, but obey their father's commandment: however I have spoken to you, (k) rising early and speaking; but ye hearkened not to me.
(k) I have most diligently exhorted and warned you both by myself and my prophet.
(Jer 35:15) I haue sent also vnto you all my seruants the Prophetes, rising vp earely, and sending, them, saying, Returne nowe euery man from his euill way, and amende your workes, and goe not after other gods to serue them, and ye shall dwel in the lande which I haue giuen vnto you, and to your fathers, but ye would not encline your eare, nor obey mee.
(Jer 35:16) Surely the sonnes of Ionadab the sonne of Rechab, haue kept the commandement of their father, which he gaue them, but this people hath not obeyed me.
(Jer 35:17) Therefore thus saith the Lord of hostes, the God of Israel, Beholde, I will bring vpon Iudah, and vpon all the inhabitants of Ierusalem, all the euill that I haue pronounced against them, because I haue spoke vnto them, but they would not heare, and I haue called vnto them, but they would not answere.
(Notes Reference) Therefore thus saith the LORD God of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will bring upon Judah and upon all the inhabitants of Jerusalem all the evil that I have pronounced against them: because I have (l) spoken to them, but they have not heard; and I have called to them, but they have not answered.
(l) That is, by his prophets and ministers which shows that it is as much, as though he would speak to us himself when he sends his ministers to speak in his Name.
(Jer 35:18) And Ieremiah said to the house of the Rechabites, Thus saith the Lord of hostes the God of Israel, Because ye haue obeyed the commandement of Ionadab your father, and kept all his precepts, and done according vnto all that hee hath commanded you,
(Jer 35:19) Therefore thus saith the Lord of hostes, the God of Israel, Ionadab the sonne of Rechab shall not want a man, to stand before me for euer.
(Notes Reference) Therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Jonadab the son of Rechab shall (m) not lack a man to stand before me for ever.
(m) His posterity will continue and be in my favour for ever.
Passage 3: Mark 9
(Mar 9:1) And he saide vnto them, Verely I say vnto you, that there be some of them that stande here, which shall not taste of death till they haue seene the kingdome of God come with power.
(Notes Reference) And he said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That there be some of them that stand here, which shall not taste of death, till they have seen the (a) kingdom of God come with power.
(a) When he will begin his kingdom through the preaching of the gospel: that is to say, after the resurrection.
(Mar 9:2) And sixe dayes after, Iesus taketh vnto him Peter, and Iames, and Iohn, and carieth them vp into an hie mountaine out of the way alone, and his shape was changed before them.
(Notes Reference) (1) And after six days Jesus taketh [with him] Peter, and James, and John, and leadeth them up into an high mountain apart by themselves: and he was transfigured before them.
(1) The heavenly glory of Christ, which would within a short time be abased upon the cross, is confirmed by visible signs, by the presence and talk of Elias and Moses, and by the voice of the Father himself; all this occurred before three of his disciples, who are witnesses against whom there is no objection.
(Mar 9:3) And his rayment did shine, and was very white, as snowe, so white as no fuller can make vpon the earth.
(Notes Reference) And his raiment (b) became shining, exceeding white as snow; so as no fuller on earth can white them.
(b) Did sparkle as it were.
(Mar 9:4) And there appeared vnto them Elias with Moses, and they were talking with Iesus.
(Mar 9:5) Then Peter answered, and said to Iesus, Master, it is good for vs to be here: let vs make also three tabernacles, one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias.
(Mar 9:6) Yet hee knewe not what he saide: for they were afraide.
(Notes Reference) For he wist not what to say; for they were sore (c) afraid.
(c) They were beside themselves with fear.
(Mar 9:7) And there was a cloude that shadowed them, and a voyce came out of the cloude, saying, This is my beloued Sonne: heare him.
(Mar 9:8) And suddenly they looked roud about, and sawe no more any man saue Iesus only with them.
(Mar 9:9) And as they came downe from the mountaine, he charged them, that they should tell no man what they had seene, saue when the Sonne of man were risen from the dead againe.
(Notes Reference) (2) And as they came down from the mountain, he charged them that they should tell no man what things they had seen, till the Son of man were risen from the dead.
(2) The Lord has appointed certain times for the publishing of the gospel.
(Mar 9:10) So they kept that matter to themselues, and demaunded one of another, what the rising from the dead againe should meane?
(Notes Reference) And they (d) kept that saying with themselves, (e) questioning one with another what the rising from the dead should mean.
(d) Though just barely as it were.
(e) They did not question together concerning the general resurrection, which will be in the latter day, but they did not understand what he meant when he spoke of his own special resurrection.
(Mar 9:11) Also they asked him, saying, Why say the Scribes, that Elias must first come?
(Notes Reference) (3) And they asked him, saying, Why say the scribes that Elias must first come?
(3) The foolish opinion of the rabbis concerning Elias' coming is refuted here, which was that either Elias should rise again from the dead, or that his soul would enter into some other body.
(Mar 9:12) And he answered, and said vnto them, Elias verely shall first come, and restore all things: and as it is written of the Sonne of man, hee must suffer many things, and be set at nought.
(Mar 9:13) But I say vnto you, that Elias is come, (and they haue done vnto him whatsoeuer they would) as it is written of him.
(Mar 9:14) And when he came to his disciples, he saw a great multitude about them, and the Scribes disputing with them.
(Notes Reference) (4) And when he came to [his] disciples, he saw a great multitude about them, and the scribes questioning with them.
(4) Christ shows by a miracle, even to the unworthy, that he has come to restrain the wrath of Satan.
(Mar 9:15) And straightway all the people, when they behelde him, were amased, and ranne to him, and saluted him.
(Mar 9:16) Then hee asked the Scribes, What dispute you among your selues?
(Mar 9:17) And one of the companie answered, and said, Master, I haue brought my sonne vnto thee, which hath a dumme spirit:
(Mar 9:18) And wheresoeuer he taketh him, he teareth him, and he fometh, and gnasheth his teeth, and pineth away: and I spake to thy disciples, that they should cast him out, and they could not.
(Notes Reference) And wheresoever he taketh him, he (f) teareth him: and he foameth, and gnasheth with his teeth, and pineth away: and I spake to thy disciples that they should cast him out; and they could not.
(f) Vexes him inwardly, as the colic does.
(Mar 9:19) Then he answered him, and said, O faithlesse generation, how long now shall I be with you! how long now shall I suffer you! Bring him vnto me.
(Mar 9:20) So they brought him vnto him: and assoone as the spirit sawe him, hee tare him, and hee fell downe on the ground walowing and foming.
(Notes Reference) And they brought him unto him: and when he (g) saw him, straightway the spirit tare him; and he fell on the ground, and wallowed foaming.
(g) As soon as Jesus had looked upon the boy that was brought to him, the demon began to rage in this way.
(Mar 9:21) Then he asked his father, How long time is it since he hath bin thus? And he said, Of a childe.
(Mar 9:22) And oft times he casteth him into the fire, and into the water to destroy him: but if thou canst do any thing, helpe vs, and haue compassion vpon vs.
(Mar 9:23) And Iesus said vnto him, If thou canst beleeue it, al things are possible to him that beleeueth.
(Notes Reference) Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, (h) all things [are] possible to him that believeth.
(h) Christ can and will do anything for those that believe in him.
(Mar 9:24) And straightway the father of the childe crying with teares, saide, Lord, I beleeue: helpe my vnbeliefe.
(Mar 9:25) When Iesus saw that the people came running together, he rebuked the vncleane spirit, saying vnto him, Thou domme and deafe spirit, I charge thee, come out of him, and enter no more into him.
(Mar 9:26) Then the spirit cried, and rent him sore, and came out, and he was as one dead, in so much that many said, He is dead.
(Notes Reference) (5) And [the spirit] cried, and rent him sore, and came out of him: and he was as one dead; insomuch that many said, He is dead.
(5) The nearer that the virtue of Christ is the far greater Satan rages.
(Mar 9:27) But Iesus tooke his hande, and lift him vp, and he arose.
(Mar 9:28) And when hee was come into the house, his disciples asked him secretly, Why could not we cast him out?
(Notes Reference) (6) And when he was come into the house, his disciples asked him privately, Why could not we cast him out?
(6) We have need of faith, and therefore of prayer and fasting, in order to cast Satan out of that which belonged to him.
(Mar 9:29) And he saide vnto them, This kinde can by no other meanes come foorth, but by prayer and fasting.
(Mar 9:30) And they departed thence, and went together through Galile, and hee would not that any should haue knowen it.
(Notes Reference) And they departed thence, and (i) passed through Galilee; and he would not that any man should know [it].
(i) He and his disciples together.
(Mar 9:31) For he taught his disciples, and saide vnto them, The Sonne of man shalbe deliuered into the handes of men, and they shall kill him, but after that he is killed, he shall rise againe the third day.
(Notes Reference) (7) For he taught his disciples, and said unto them, The Son of man is delivered into the hands of men, and they shall kill him; and after that he is killed, he shall rise the third day.
(7) Christ forewarns us with great diligence so that we should not be discouraged with sudden calamities; but man's slowness to understand is great.
(Mar 9:32) But they vnderstoode not that saying, and were afraide to aske him.
(Mar 9:33) After, he came to Capernaum: and when he was in the house, he asked them, What was it that ye disputed among you by the way?
(Notes Reference) (8) And he came to Capernaum: and being in the (k) house he asked them, What was it that ye disputed among yourselves by the way?
(8) Only humility exalts.
(k) Where he was accustomed to make his home.
(Mar 9:34) And they helde their peace: for by the way they reasoned among themselues, who should bee the chiefest.
(Mar 9:35) And he sate downe, and called the twelue, and said to them, If any man desire to be first, the same shalbe last of all, and seruant vnto all.
(Mar 9:36) And he tooke a litle childe, and set him in the middes of them, and tooke him in his armes, and sayd vnto them,
(Mar 9:37) Whosoeuer shall receiue one of such litle children in my Name, receiueth me: and whosoeuer receiueth mee, receiueth not me, but him that sent me.
(Notes Reference) Whosoever shall receive one of such children in my name, receiveth me: and whosoever shall receive me, receiveth not (l) me, but him that sent me.
(l) He not only receives me, but also him that sent me.
(Mar 9:38) Then Iohn answered him, saying, Master, we sawe one casting out deuils by thy Name, which followeth not vs, and we forbade him, because he followeth vs not.
(Notes Reference) (9) And John answered him, saying, Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name, and he followeth not us: and we forbad him, because he followeth not us.
(9) God, who normally works through ordinary means, works also extraordinarily as often as it pleases him. But an extraordinary means is tested by the doctrine and the effects.
(Mar 9:39) But Iesus sayd, Forbid him not: for there is no man that can doe a miracle by my Name, that can lightly speake euill of me.
(Mar 9:40) For whosoeuer is not against vs, is on our part.
(Mar 9:41) And whosoeuer shall giue you a cup of water to drinke for my Names sake, because ye belong to Christ, verely I say vnto you, he shall not lose his rewarde.
(Mar 9:42) And whosoeuer shall offend one of these litle ones, that beleeue in me, it were better for him rather, that a milstone were hanged about his necke, and that he were cast into the sea.
(Notes Reference) (10) And whosoever shall offend one of [these] little ones that believe in me, it is better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he were cast into the sea.
(10) God is such a severe avenger of offences that it is better to suffer anything else than to be an occasion of offence to any.
(Mar 9:43) Wherefore, if thine hand cause thee to offend, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life, maimed, then hauing two hands, to goe into hell, into the fire that neuer shalbe quenched,
(Mar 9:44) Where their worme dyeth not, and the fire neuer goeth out.

(m) Their worm who will be cast into that flame.
(Mar 9:45) Likewise, if thy foote cause thee to offend, cut it off: it is better for thee to go halt into life, then hauing two feete, to be cast into hell, into the fire that neuer shalbe quenched,
(Mar 9:46) Where their worme dyeth not, and the fire neuer goeth out.
(Mar 9:47) And if thine eye cause thee to offende, plucke it out: it is better for thee to goe into the kingdome of God with one eye, then hauing two eyes, to be cast into hell fire,
(Mar 9:48) Where their worme dyeth not, and the fire neuer goeth out.
(Mar 9:49) For euery man shalbe salted with fire: and euery sacrifice shalbe salted with salt.
(Notes Reference) (11) For every one shall be (n) salted with fire, and every sacrifice shall be salted with salt.
(11) We must be seasoned and sprinkled by God, so that we may be both acceptable sacrifices unto him, and also so that in our being knit together we may season one another.
(n) That is, will be consecrated to God, being seasoned with the incorruptible word.
(Mar 9:50) Salt is good: but if the salt be vnsauerie, wherewith shall it be seasoned? haue salt in your selues, and haue peace one with another.
