Passage 1: 1 Kings 16

(1Ki 16:1) Then the word of the Lord came to Iehu the sonne of Hanani against Baasha, saying,

(1Ki 16:2) Forasmuch as I exalted thee out of the dust, and made thee captaine ouer my people Israel, and thou hast walked in the way of Ieroboam, and hast made my people Israel to sinne, to prouoke me with their sinnes,

(Notes Reference) (a) Forasmuch as I exalted thee out of the dust, and made thee prince over my people Israel; and thou hast walked in the way of Jeroboam, and hast made my people Israel to sin, to provoke me to anger with their sins;

(a) Thus spoke Jehu to Baasha in the Name of the Lord.

(1Ki 16:3) Beholde, I will take away the posteritie of Baasha, and the posteritie of his house, and will make thine house like the house of Ieroboam the sonne of Nebat.

(Notes Reference) Behold, I will take away the posterity of Baasha, and the posterity of his house; and will make (b) thy house like the house of Jeroboam the son of Nebat.

(b) Meaning, the house of Baasha.

(1Ki 16:4) He that dyeth of Baashas stocke in the citie, him shall the dogs eate: and that man of him which dyeth in the fieldes, shall the foules of the ayre eate.

(1Ki 16:5) And the rest of the actes of Baasha and what he did, and his power, are they not written in the booke of the Chronicles of the kings of Israel?

(1Ki 16:6) So Baasha slept with his fathers, and was buryed in Tirzah, and Elah his sonne reigned in his steade.

(1Ki 16:7) And also by the hande of Iehu the sonne of Hanani the Prophet, came the worde of the Lord to Baasha, and to his house, that he shoulde be like the house of Ieroboam, euen for all the wickednes that he did in the sight of the Lord, in prouoking him with the worke of his hands, and because he killed him.

(Notes Reference) And also (c) by the hand of the prophet Jehu the son of Hanani came the word of the LORD against Baasha, and against his house, even for all the evil that he did in the sight of the LORD, in provoking him to anger with the work of his hands, in being like the house of Jeroboam; and because he killed (d) him.

(c) That is, the prophet did his message.

(d) Meaning, Nadab Jeroboam's son.

(1Ki 16:8) In the sixe and twentie yeere of Asa king of Iudah began Elah ye sonne of Baasha to reigne ouer Israel in Tirzah, and reigned two yeere.

(1Ki 16:9) And his seruant Zimri, captaine of halfe his charets, conspired against him, as he was in Tirzah drinking, til he was drunken in the house of Arza steward of his house in Tirzah.

(Notes Reference) And his servant Zimri, captain of half [his] chariots, conspired against him, as he was in Tirzah, (e) drinking himself drunk in the house of Arza steward of [his] house in Tirzah.

(e) The Chaldee text has this, "Drinking till he was drunk in the temple of Arza the idol by his house in Tirzah".

(1Ki 16:10) And Zimri came and smote him and killed him, in the seuen and twentie yeere of Asa king of Iudah, and reigned in his stead.

(1Ki 16:11) And when he was King, and sate on his throne, he slew al the house of Baasha, not leauing thereof one to pisse against a wall, neither of his kinsfolkes nor of his friendes.

(1Ki 16:12) So did Zimri destroy all the house of Baasha, according to the word of the Lord which he spake against Baasha by the hande of Iehu the Prophet,

(Notes Reference) Thus did Zimri destroy all the house of Baasha, according to the word of the LORD, which he spake against Baasha by Jehu the (f) prophet,

(f) Both Hanani his father and he were prophets.

(1Ki 16:13) For all the sinnes of Baasha, and sinnes of Elah his sonne, which they sinned and made Israel to sinne, and prouoked the Lord God of Israel with their vanities.

(1Ki 16:14) And the rest of the actes of Elah, and all that he did, are they not written in the booke of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel?

(1Ki 16:15) In the seuen and twentie yeere of Asa King of Iudah did Zimri reigne seuen dayes in Tirzah, and the people was then in campe against Gibbethon, which belonged to the Philistims.

(Notes Reference) In the twenty and seventh year of Asa king of Judah did Zimri reign seven days in Tirzah. And the people [were] encamped (g) against Gibbethon, which [belonged] to the Philistines.

(g) The siege had continued from the time of Nadab Jeroboam's son.

(1Ki 16:16) And the people of the hoste heard saye, Zimri hath conspired, and hath also slayne the King. Wherefore all Israel made Omri the captaine of the hoste, king ouer Israel that same day, euen in the hoste.

(1Ki 16:17) Then Omri went vp from Gibbethon, and all Israel with him, and they besieged Tirzah.

(Notes Reference) And Omri went up from Gibbethon, and all Israel with him, and they besieged (h) Tirzah.

(h) Where Zimri holed up.

(1Ki 16:18) And when Zimri saw, that the citie was taken, he went into the palace of the Kings house, and burnt himselfe, and the Kings house with fire, and so dyed,

(1Ki 16:19) For his sinnes which hee sinned, in doing that which is euil in the sight of the Lord, in walking in the way of Ieroboam, and in his sinnes which he did, causing Israel to sinne.

(1Ki 16:20) And the rest of the actes of Zimri, and his treason that hee wrought, are they not written in the booke of the Chronicles of the Kinges of Israel?

(1Ki 16:21) Then were the people of Israel deuided into two partes: for halfe the people followed Tibni the sonne of Ginath to make him King, and the other halfe followed Omri.

(Notes Reference) Then were the people of Israel divided into two parts: (i) half of the people followed Tibni the son of Ginath, to make him king; and half followed Omri.

(i) That is, the people who were not at the siege of Gibbethon: for there they had chosen Omri.

(1Ki 16:22) But the people that folowed Omri, preuayled against the people that followed Tibni the sonne of Ginath: so Tibni dyed, and Omri reigned.

(1Ki 16:23) In the one and thirtie yeere of Asa King of Iudah bega Omri to reigne ouer Israel, and reigned twelue yeere. Sixe yeere reigned he in Tirzah.

(1Ki 16:24) And he bought the mountaine Samaria of one Shemer for two talents of siluer, and buylt in the mountaine, and called the name of the citie, which he buylt, after the name of Shemer lord of the mountaine, Samaria.

(1Ki 16:25) But Omri did euil in the eyes of the Lord, and did worse then all that were before him.

(Notes Reference) But Omri wrought evil in the eyes of the LORD, and did (k) worse than all that [were] before him.

(k) For such is the nature of idolatry, that the superstition of it daily increases, and the older it is, the more abominable it is before God and his Church.

(1Ki 16:26) For he walked in all the way of Ieroboam the sonne of Nebat, and in his sinnes wherewith he made Israel to sinne in prouoking the Lord God of Israel with their vanities.

(1Ki 16:27) And the rest of the actes of Omri, that hee did, and his strength that he shewed, are they not written in the booke of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel?

(1Ki 16:28) And Omri slept with his fathers, and was buryed in Samaria: and Ahab his sonne reigned in his stead.

(Notes Reference) So Omri slept with his fathers, and was buried in (l) Samaria: and Ahab his son reigned in his stead.

(l) He was the first king that was buried in Samaria, after that the kings house was burnt in Tirzah.

(1Ki 16:29) Nowe Ahab the sonne of Omri began to reigne ouer Israel, in the eyght and thirtie yeere of Asa king of Iudah: and Ahab the sonne of Omri reigned ouer Israel in Samaria two and twenty yere.

(1Ki 16:30) And Ahab the sonne of Omri did worse in ye sight of the Lord then al that were before him.

(1Ki 16:31) For was it a light thing for him to walke in the sinnes of Ieroboam the sonne of Nebat, except hee tooke Iezebel also the daughter of Ethbaal King of the Zidonians to wife, and went and serued Baal, and worshipped him?

(Notes Reference) And it came to pass, as if it had been a light thing for him to walk in the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, that he took (m) to wife Jezebel the daughter of Ethbaal king of the Zidonians, and went and served Baal, and worshipped him.

(m) By whose influence he fell into wicked and strange idolatry and cruel persecution.

(1Ki 16:32) Also he reared vp an altar to Baal in the house of Baal, which he had buylt in Samaria.

(1Ki 16:33) And Ahab made a groue, and Ahab proceeded, and did prouoke the Lord God of Israel more then all the kings of Israel that were before him.

(1Ki 16:34) In his dayes did Hiel the Bethelite buylde Iericho: he layed the foundation thereof in Abiram his eldest sonne, and set vp the gates thereof in his yongest sonne Segub, according to the worde of the Lord which he spake by Ioshua the sonne of Nun.

(Notes Reference) In his days did Hiel the Bethelite build (n) Jericho: he laid the foundation thereof in Abiram his firstborn, and set up the gates thereof in his youngest [son] Segub, according to the word of the LORD, which he spake by Joshua the son of Nun.

(n) See (Jos 6:26).


Passage 2: Jeremiah 42

(Jer 42:1) Then all the captaines of the hoste, and Iohanan the sonne of Kareah, and Iezaniah the sonne of Hoshaaiah, and all the people from the least vnto the most came,

(Jer 42:2) And saide vnto Ieremiah the Prophete, Heare our prayer, we beseeche thee, and pray for vs vnto the Lord thy God, euen for all this remnant (for we are left, but a fewe of many, as thine eyes doe beholde)

(Jer 42:3) That the Lord thy God may shewe vs the way wherein wee may walke, and the thing that we may doe.

(Notes Reference) That the LORD thy God may show us the way in which we may walk, and the thing that we may (a) do.

(a) This declares the nature of hypocrites who would know of God's word what they should do, but will not follow it, unless it agrees with that thing which they have purposed to do.

(Jer 42:4) Then Ieremiah the Prophet said vnto them, I haue heard you: behold, I will pray vnto ye Lord your God according to your wordes, and whatsoeuer thing the Lord shall answere you, I will declare it vnto you: I will keepe nothing backe from you.

(Jer 42:5) Then they said to Ieremiah, The Lord be a witnesse of trueth, and faith betweene vs, if we doe not, euen according to all things for ye which the Lord thy God shall send thee to vs.

(Notes Reference) Then they said to Jeremiah, (b) The LORD be a true and faithful witness between us, if we do not even according to all things for which the LORD thy God shall send thee to us.

(b) There are as ready to abuse the Name of God and take it in vain as the hypocrites who colour their falsehood, use it without all reverence and make it a means for them to deceive the simple and the godly.

(Jer 42:6) Whether it be good or euill, we will obey the voyce of the Lord God, to whom we sende thee that it may be well with vs, when wee obey the voyce of the Lord our God.

(Jer 42:7) And so after ten dayes came the word of the Lord vnto Ieremiah.

(Notes Reference) (c) And it came to pass after ten days, that the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah.

(c) Here is declared the vision and the opportunity of it, of which mention was made, (Jer 40:1).

(Jer 42:8) Then called he Iohanan the sonne of Kareah, and all the captaines of the hoste, which were with him, and all ye people from ye least to the most,

(Jer 42:9) And saide vnto them, Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, vnto whom ye sent me to present your prayers before him,

(Jer 42:10) If ye will dwell in this land, then I wil build you, and not destroy you, and I will plant you, and not roote you out: for I repent me of the euill that I haue done vnto you.

(Notes Reference) If ye will still abide in this land, then will I build you, and not pull [you] down, and I will plant you, and not pluck [you] up: for I (d) repent of the evil that I have done to you.

(d) See Jer 18:8

(Jer 42:11) Feare not for the King of Babel, of whom ye are afraide: be not afraid of him, saith the Lord: for I am with you, to saue you, and to deliuer you from his hand,

(Notes Reference) Be not afraid of the king of Babylon, of whom ye are afraid; be not afraid of him, saith the LORD: for I [am] with you to save you, and to deliver you (e) from his hand.

(e) Because all king's hearts and ways are in his hands, he can turn them and dispose them as it pleases him, and therefore they need not fear man, but only obey God, (Pro 21:1).

(Jer 42:12) And I will graunt you mercie that he may haue compassion vpon you, and he shall cause you to dwell in your owne land.

(Jer 42:13) But if ye say, We will not dwell in this land, neither heare the voyce of the Lord your God,

(Jer 42:14) Saying, Nay, but we will goe into the land of Egypt, where we shall see no warre, nor heare the sounde of the trumpet, nor haue hunger of bread, and there will we dwell,

(Jer 42:15) (And nowe therefore heare the worde of the Lord, ye remnant of Iudah: thus sayeth the Lord of hostes the God of Israel, If ye set your faces to enter into Egypt, and goe to dwell there)

(Jer 42:16) Then the sworde that ye feared, shall take you there in the land of Egypt, and the famine, for the which ye care, shall there hang vpon you in Egypt, and there shall ye die.

(Notes Reference) Then it shall come to pass, [that] the sword, which ye feared, (f) shall overtake you there in the land of Egypt, and the famine, of which ye were afraid, shall follow close after you there in Egypt; and there ye shall die.

(f) Thus God turns the policy of the wicked to their own destruction: for they thought themselves sure in Egypt, and there Nebuchadnezzar destroyed them and the Egyptians, (Jer 46:25).

(Jer 42:17) And all the men that set their faces to enter into Egypt to dwell there, shall die by ye sword, by the famine and by the pestilence, and none of them shall remaine nor escape from the plague, that I will bring vpon them.

(Jer 42:18) For thus saith the Lord of hostes the God of Israel, As mine anger and my wrath hath bene powred foorth vpon the inhabitants of Ierusalem: so shall my wrath be powred foorth vpon you, when ye shall enter into Egypt, and ye shall be a detestation, and an astonishment, and a curse and a reproche, and ye shall see this place no more.

(Notes Reference) For thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; As my anger and my fury hath been poured forth upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem; so shall my fury be poured forth upon you, when ye shall enter into Egypt: and ye shall be an execration, and an horror, and a (g) curse, and a reproach; and ye shall see this place no more.

(g) Read (Jer 26:6) showing that this would come on them for their infidelity and stubbornness.

(Jer 42:19) O ye remnant of Iudah, the Lord hath said concerning you, Goe not into Egypt: knowe certeinely that I haue admonished you this day.

(Jer 42:20) Surely ye dissembled in your hearts When ye sent me vnto the Lord your God, saying, Pray for vs vnto the Lord our God, and declare vnto vs euen according vnto al that the Lord our God shall say, and we will doe it.

(Notes Reference) For ye were (h) hypocrites in your hearts, when ye sent me to the LORD your God, saying, Pray for us to the LORD our God; and according to all that the LORD our God shall say, so declare to us, and we will do [it].

(h) For you were fully intending to go into Egypt, whatever God spoke to the contrary.

(Jer 42:21) Therefore I haue this day declared it you, but you haue not obeyed the voyce of the Lord your God, nor any thing for the which he hath sent me vnto you.

(Jer 42:22) Nowe therefore, knowe certeinely that ye shall die by the sworde, by the famine, and by the pestilence, in the place whither ye desire to goe and dwell.

(Notes Reference) Now therefore know certainly that ye shall die by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence, (i) in the place where ye desire to go [and] to sojourn.

(i) That is, in Egypt.


Passage 3: Mark 16

(Mar 16:1) And when the Sabbath day was past, Marie Magdalene, and Marie the mother of Iames, and Salome, bought sweete oyntments, that they might come, and anoynt him.

(Mar 16:2) Therefore early in the morning, the first day of the weeke, they came vnto the sepulchre, when the Sunne was nowe risen.

(Mar 16:3) And they saide one to another, Who shall rolle vs away the stone from the doore of the sepulchre?

(Mar 16:4) And when they looked, they saw that the stone was rolled away (for it was a very great one)

(Notes Reference) And when they (a) looked, they saw that the stone was rolled away: for it was very great.

(a) When they cast their eyes toward the sepulchre.

(Mar 16:5) So they went into the sepulchre, and saw a yong man sitting at the right side, clothed in a long white robe: and they were sore troubled.

(Notes Reference) And entering into the (b) sepulchre, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, clothed in a long white garment; and they were affrighted.

(b) Into the cave out of which the sepulchre was cut.

(Mar 16:6) But he said vnto them, Be not so troubled: ye seeke Iesus of Nazareth, which hath bene crucified: he is risen, he is not here: behold the place where they put him.

(Mar 16:7) But goe your way, and tell his disciples, and Peter, that he will goe before you into Galile: there shall ye see him, as he said vnto you.

(Mar 16:8) And they went out quickly, and fled from the sepulchre: for they trembled, and were amased: neither said they any thing to any man: for they were afraide.

(Mar 16:9) And when Iesus was risen againe, early the first day of the weeke, he appeared first to Marie Magdalene, out of whom he had cast seuen deuils:

(Notes Reference) (1) Now when [Jesus] was risen early the first [day] of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had cast seven devils.

(1) Christ himself appears to Mary Magdalene to reprove the disciple's incredulity.

(Mar 16:10) And shee went and tolde them that had bene with him, which mourned and wept.

(Mar 16:11) And when they heard that he was aliue, and had appeared to her, they beleeued it not.

(Mar 16:12) After that, he appeared vnto two of them in an other forme, as they walked and went into the countrey.

(Notes Reference) (2) After that he appeared in another form unto two of them, as they walked, and went into the country.

(2) Christ appears to two other disciples and at length to the eleven.

(Mar 16:13) And they went, and told it to the remnant, neither beleeued they them.

(Mar 16:14) Finally, he appeared vnto the eleuen as they sate together, and reproched them for their vnbeliefe and hardnesse of heart, because they beleeued not them which had seene him, being risen vp againe.

(Notes Reference) (c) Afterward he appeared unto the eleven as they sat at meat, and upbraided them with their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they believed not them which had seen him after he was risen.

(c) The evangelist did not consider the chronological sequence of events, but rather what took place, which he divided into three parts: The first shows how he appeared to the women, the second to his disciples, the third to his apostles, and therefore he says "finally".

(Mar 16:15) And he saide vnto them, Goe ye into all the worlde, and preach the Gospel to euery creature.

(Notes Reference) (3) And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to (d) every creature.

(3) The apostles are appointed, and their office is limited to them, which is to preach that which they heard from him, and to minister the sacraments which Christ has instituted, having in addition to this the power to do miracles.

(d) Not to the Jews only, nor in Judea only, but to all men and everywhere: and so must all the apostles do.

(Mar 16:16) He that shall beleeue and be baptized, shalbe saued: but he that will not beleeue, shalbe damned.

(Mar 16:17) And these tokens shall folowe them that beleeue, In my Name they shall cast out deuils, and shall speake with newe tongues,

(Notes Reference) And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with (e) new tongues;

(e) Strange tongues, ones which they did not know before.

(Mar 16:18) And shall take away serpents, and if they shall drinke any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them: they shall lay their handes on the sicke, and they shall recouer.

(Mar 16:19) So after ye Lord had spoken vnto them, he was receiued into heauen, and sate at the right hand of God.

(Notes Reference) (4) So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God.

(4) Christ, having accomplished his office on earth, ascends into heaven, from where (the doctrine of his apostles being confirmed with signs) he will govern his Church, until the world's end.

(Mar 16:20) And they went foorth, and preached euery where. And the Lord wrought with them, and confirmed the worde with signes that folowed. Amen.

(Notes Reference) And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with [them], and confirming (f) the word with signs following. Amen.

(f) That is, the doctrine: therefore doctrine must go before and signs must follow after.
