Passage 1: 1 Samuel 23

(1Sa 23:1) Then they tolde Dauid, saying, Beholde, the Philistims fight against Keilah, and spoyle the barnes.

(Notes Reference) Then they told David, saying, Behold, the Philistines fight against (a) Keilah, and they rob the threshingfloors.

(a) Which was a city in the tribe of Judah, (Jos 15:44).

(1Sa 23:2) Therfore Dauid asked counsel of the Lord, saying, Shal I goe and smite these Philistims? And the Lord answered Dauid, Go and smite the Philistims, and saue Keilah.

(1Sa 23:3) And Dauids men said vnto him, See, we be afrayde here in Iudah, howe much more if we come to Keilah against the hoste of ye Philistims?

(Notes Reference) And David's men said unto him, Behold, we be afraid here in (b) Judah: how much more then if we come to Keilah against the armies of the Philistines?

(b) That is, in the midst of Judah, much more when we come to the borders against our enemies.

(1Sa 23:4) Then Dauid asked counsell of the Lord againe. And the Lord answered him, and sayd, Arise, go downe to Keilah: for I wil deliuer the Philistims into thine hand.

(1Sa 23:5) So Dauid and his men went to Keilah, and fought with the Philistims, and brought away their cattel, and smote them with a great slaughter: thus Dauid saued the inhabitants of Keilah.

(1Sa 23:6) (And when Abiathar the sonne of Ahimelech fled to Dauid to Keilah, he brought an Ephod with him)

(Notes Reference) And it came to pass, when Abiathar the son of Ahimelech fled to David to Keilah, [that] he came down [with] an (c) ephod in his hand.

(c) By God's providence the ephod was preserved and kept with David the true king.

(1Sa 23:7) And it was tolde Saul that Dauid was come to Keilah, and Saul sayd, God hath deliuered him into mine hand: for he is shut in, seeing he is come into a citie that hath gates and barres.

(1Sa 23:8) Then Saul called all the people together to warre, for to go downe to Keilah, and to besiege Dauid and his men.

(1Sa 23:9) And Dauid hauing knowledge that Saul imagined mischiefe against him, saide to Abiathar the Priest, Bring the Ephod.

(Notes Reference) And David knew that Saul secretly practised mischief against him; and he said to Abiathar the priest, (d) Bring hither the ephod.

(d) To consult with the Lord by Urim and Thummim.

(1Sa 23:10) Then sayde Dauid, O Lord God of Israel, thy seruat hath heard, that Saul is about to come to Keilah to destroy the citie for my sake.

(1Sa 23:11) Wil the lordes of Keilah deliuer me vp into his hand? and will Saul come downe, as thy seruant hath heard? O Lord God of Israel, I beseech thee, tell thy seruant. And the Lord sayde, He will come downe.

(1Sa 23:12) Then said Dauid, Will the lords of Keilah deliuer me vp, and the men that are with me, into the hand of Saul? And the Lord sayde, They will deliuer thee vp.

(1Sa 23:13) Then Dauid and his men, which were about sixe hundreth, arose, and departed out of Keilah, and went whither they coulde. And it was tolde Saul, that Dauid was fled from Keilah, and he left off his iourney.

(1Sa 23:14) And Dauid abode in the wildernesse in holdes, and remayned in a mountaine in the wildernes of Ziph. And Saul sought him euery day, but God deliuered him not into his hand.

(Notes Reference) And David abode in the wilderness in strong holds, and remained in a mountain in the wilderness of Ziph. And Saul sought him every day, but God (e) delivered him not into his hand.

(e) No power nor policy can prevail against God's children, but when he appoints the time.

(1Sa 23:15) And Dauid sawe that Saul was come out for to seeke his life: and Dauid was in the wildernes of Ziph in the wood.

(1Sa 23:16) And Ionathan Sauls sonne arose and went to Dauid into the wood, and comforted him in God,

(1Sa 23:17) And said vnto him, Feare not: for the hand of Saul my father shall not finde thee, and thou shalt be King ouer Israel, and I shalbe next vnto thee: and also Saul my father knoweth it.

(Notes Reference) And he said unto him, Fear not: for the hand of Saul my father shall not find thee; and thou shalt be (f) king over Israel, and I shall be next unto thee; and that also Saul my father knoweth.

(f) Jonathan assured David, that God would accomplish his promise, and that his father warred against his own conscience.

(1Sa 23:18) So they twaine made a couenant before ye Lord: and Dauid did remaine in the wood: but Ionathan went to his house.

(1Sa 23:19) Then came vp the Ziphims to Saul to Gibeah, saying, Doeth not Dauid hide himselfe by vs in holdes, in the wood in the hill of Hachilah, which is on the right side of Ieshimon?

(1Sa 23:20) Nowe therefore, O King, come downe according to all that thine heart can desire, and our part shall be to deliuer him into the Kinges handes.

(1Sa 23:21) Then Saul said, Be ye blessed of the Lord: for ye haue had compassion on mee.

(Notes Reference) And Saul said, (g) Blessed [be] ye of the LORD; for ye have compassion on me.

(g) the Lord recompense this friendship.

(1Sa 23:22) Goe, I pray you, and prepare ye yet better: know and see his place where he haunteth, and who hath seene him there: for it is sayd to me, He is subtile, and craftie.

(1Sa 23:23) See therefore and know all the secret places where he hideth himselfe, and come ye againe to me with the certaintie, and I will goe with you: and if he be in the lande, I will searche him out throughout all the thousands of Iudah.

(Notes Reference) See therefore, and take knowledge of all the lurking places where he hideth himself, and come ye again to me with the certainty, and I will go with you: and it shall come to pass, if he be in the (h) land, that I will search him out throughout all the thousands of Judah.

(h) In your country of Ziph, which is in Judah.

(1Sa 23:24) Then they arose and went to Ziph before Saul, but Dauid and his men were in the wildernesse of Maon, in the playne on the right hande of Ieshimon.

(1Sa 23:25) Saul also and his men went to seeke him, and they told Dauid: wherefore he came downe vnto a rocke, and abode in the wildernesse of Maon. And when Saul heard that, he folowed after Dauid in the wildernes of Maon.

(Notes Reference) Saul also and his men went to seek [him]. And they told David: wherefore he came down into a rock, and abode in the wilderness of (i) Maon. And when Saul heard [that], he pursued after David in the wilderness of Maon.

(i) Which was also in the tribe of Judah, (Jos 15:55).

(1Sa 23:26) And Saul and his men went on the one side of the mountaine, and Dauid and his men on the other side of the mountaine: and Dauid made haste to get from the presence of Saul: for Saul and his men compassed Dauid and his men round about, to take them.

(1Sa 23:27) But there came a messenger to Saul, saying, Haste thee, and come: for the Philistims haue inuaded the land.

(Notes Reference) But there came a (k) messenger unto Saul, saying, Haste thee, and come; for the Philistines have invaded the land.

(k) Thus the Lord can pull back the bridle of the tyrants and deliver his out of the lion's mouth.

(1Sa 23:28) Wherefore Saul returned from pursuing Dauid, and went against the Philistims. Therefore they called that place, Sela-hammahlekoth.

(Notes Reference) Wherefore Saul returned from pursuing after David, and went against the Philistines: therefore they called that place (l) Selahammahlekoth.

(a) That is, in strong places, which were defended by nature.

Passage 2: Isaiah 66

(Isa 66:1) Thus saith the Lord, The heauen is my throne, and the earth is my footestoole: where is that house that ye will builde vnto me? and where is that place of my rest?

(Notes Reference) Thus saith the LORD, The (a) heaven [is] my throne, and the earth [is] my footstool: where [is] the house that ye build to me? and where [is] the place of my rest?

(a) My majesty is so great, that it fills both heaven and earth, and therefore cannot be included in a temple like an idol, condemning by this their main confidence which trusted in the temple and sacrifices.

(Isa 66:2) For all these things hath mine hand made, and all these things haue bene, sayth the Lord: and to him will I looke, euen to him, that is poore, and of a contrite spirite and trembleth at my wordes.

(Notes Reference) For all these [things] hath my hand made, (b) and all these [things] have been, saith the LORD: but to this [man] will I look, [even] to [him that is] poor and of (c) a contrite spirit, and trembleth at my word.

(b) Seeing that both the temple and the things in it, with the sacrifices were made and done by his appointment, he shows that he has no need of it, and that he can be without them, See Psa 50:10.

(c) To him that is humble and pure in heart, who receives my doctrine with reverence and fear.

(Isa 66:3) He that killeth a bullocke, is as if he slewe a man: he that sacrificeth a sheepe, as if he cut off a dogges necke: he that offereth an oblation, as if he offered swines blood: he that remembreth incense, as if he blessed an idole: yea, they haue chosen their owne wayes, and their soule deliteth in their abominations.

(Notes Reference) He that killeth an ox [is as if] he (d) slew a man; he that sacrificeth a lamb, [as if] he cut off a dog's neck; he that offereth an oblation, [as if he offered] swine's blood; he that burneth incense, [as if] he blessed an idol. Yea, they have chosen their own ways, and their soul delighteth in their abominations.

(d) Because the Jews thought themselves holy by offering their sacrifices, and in the mean season had neither faith or repentance, God shows that he no less detests these ceremonies than he does the sacrifices of the heathen, who offered men, dogs and swine to their idols, which things were expressly forbidden in the law.

(Isa 66:4) Therefore will I chuse out their delusions, and I will bring their feare vpon them, because I called, and none woulde answere: I spake and they woulde not heare: but they did euill in my sight, and chose the things which I would not.

(Notes Reference) I also will (e) choose their delusions, and will bring their fears upon them; because when I called, none did answer; when I spoke, they did not hear: but they did evil before my eyes, and chose [that] in which I delighted not.

(e) I will discover their wickedness and hypocrisy, with which they think to blind my eyes to all the world.

(Isa 66:5) Heare the worde of the Lord, all ye that tremble at his worde, Your brethren that hated you, and cast you out for my Names sake, said, Let the Lord be glorified: but he shall appeare to your ioy, and they shall be ashamed.

(Notes Reference) Hear the word of the LORD, ye that tremble at his (f) word; Your brethren that hated you, that cast you out for my name's sake, said, Let the LORD be glorified: but he shall appear to your joy, and they shall be ashamed.

(f) He encourages the faithful by promising to destroy their enemies, who pretended to be as brethren, but were hypocrites, and hated them that feared God.

(Isa 66:6) A voyce soundeth from the citie, euen a voyce from the Temple, the voyce of the Lord, that recompenseth his enemies fully.

(Notes Reference) (g) A voice of noise from the city, a voice from the temple, a voice of the LORD that rendereth recompence to his enemies.

(g) The enemies will shortly hear a more terrible voice, even fire and slaughter, seeing they would not hear the gentle voice of the prophets, who called them to repentance.

(Isa 66:7) Before she trauailed, she brought foorth: and before her paine came, she was deliuered of a man childe.

(Notes Reference) Before (h) she travailed, she brought forth; before her pain came, she was delivered of a male child.

(h) Meaning, that the restoration of the church would be so sudden and contrary to all men's opinions as when a woman is delivered before she looked for it, and without pain in travail.

(Isa 66:8) Who hath heard such a thing? who hath seene such things? shall ye earth be brought forth in one day? or shall a nation be borne at once? for assoone as Zion trauailed, she brought foorth her children.

(Notes Reference) Who hath heard such a thing? who hath seen such things? Shall the earth be made to bring forth in one (i) day? [or] shall a nation be born at once? for as soon as Zion travailed, she brought forth her children.

(i) This will pass the capacity of man to see such a multitude that will come up at once, meaning under the preaching of the gospel of which they who came out of Babylon were a sign.

(Isa 66:9) Shall I cause to trauaile, and not bring forth? shall I cause to bring forth, and shall be baren, saith thy God?

(Notes Reference) Shall I (k) bring to the birth, and not cause to bring forth? saith the LORD: shall I cause to bring forth, and shut [the womb]? saith thy God.

(k) Declaring by this that as by his power and providence women travailed and delivered so he gives power to bring forth the Church at his appointed time.

(Isa 66:10) Reioyce ye with Ierusalem, and be gladde with her, all ye that loue her: reioyce for ioy with her, all ye that mourne for her,

(Isa 66:11) That ye may sucke and be satisfied with the brestes of her consolation: that ye may milke out and be delited with ye brightnes of her glorie.

(Notes Reference) That ye may nurse, (l) and be satisfied with the breasts of her consolations; that ye may draw milk, and be delighted with the abundance of her glory.

(l) That is may rejoice for all the blessings that God bestows on his Church.

(Isa 66:12) For thus saith the Lord, Beholde, I will extend peace ouer her like a flood, and the glorie of the Gentiles like a flowing streame: then shall ye sucke, ye shall be borne vpon her sides, and be ioyfull vpon her knees.

(Notes Reference) For thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will extend (m) peace to her like a river, and the glory of the (n) Gentiles like a flowing stream: then shall ye be nursed, ye shall be (o) borne upon [her] sides, and be dandled upon [her] knees.

(Notes Reference) And when ye see [this], your heart shall rejoice, and your (p) bones shall flourish like an herb: and the hand of the LORD shall be known toward his servants, and [his] indignation toward his enemies.

(p) You will have new strength and new beauty.

(Isa 66:15) For beholde, the Lord will come with fire, and his charets like a whirlewinde, that he may recompence his anger with wrath, and his indignation with the flame of fire.

(Notes Reference) For, behold, the LORD will come with fire, and with his chariots like a whirlwind, to (q) render his anger with fury, and his rebuke with flames of fire.

(q) This vengeance God began to execute at the destruction of Babylon and has always continued it against the enemies of his Church, and will do till the last day, which will be the accomplishment of it.

(Isa 66:16) For the Lord will iudge with fire, and with his sworde all flesh, and the slaine of the Lord shall be many.

(Isa 66:17) They that sanctifie themselues, and purifie themselues in the gardens behinde one tree in the middes eating swines flesh, and such abomination, euen the mouse, shall be consumed together, sayeth the Lord.
