Passage 1: 1 Samuel 21-22
(1Sa 21:1) Then came Dauid to Nob, to Ahimelech the Priest, and Ahimelech was astonied at the meeting of Dauid, and saide vnto him, Why art thou alone, and no man with thee?
(Notes Reference) Then came David to (a) Nob to Ahimelech the priest: and Ahimelech was afraid at the meeting of David, and said unto him, Why [art] thou alone, and no man with thee?
(a) Where the ark then was to ask counsel of the Lord.
(1Sa 21:2) And Dauid saide to Ahimelech the Priest, The King hath commanded mee a certaine thing, and hath sayd vnto me, Let no man know whereabout I sende thee, and what I haue commanded thee: and I haue appointed my seruants to such and such places.
(Notes Reference) And David said unto Ahimelech the priest, The (b) king hath commanded me a business, and hath said unto me, Let no man know any thing of the business whereabout I send thee, and what I have commanded thee: and I have appointed [my] servants to such and such a place.
(b) These infirmities that we see in the saints of God, teach us that no one has his justice in himself, but receives it from God's mercy.
(1Sa 21:3) Nowe therefore if thou hast ought vnder thine hande, giue me fiue cakes of bread, or what commeth to hand.
(1Sa 21:4) And the Priest answered Dauid, and saide, There is no common bread vnder mine hande, but here is halowed bread, if the yong men haue kept themselues, at least from women.
(Notes Reference) And the priest answered David, and said, [There is] no common bread under mine hand, but there is hallowed bread; if the young men have kept themselves at least from (c) women.
(c) If they have not accompanied with their wives.
(1Sa 21:5) Dauid then answered the Priest, and sayde vnto him, Certainely women haue bene separarate from vs these two or three dayes since I came out: and the vessels of the yong men were holy, though the way were prophane, and how much more then shall euery one be sanctified this day in the vessell?
(Notes Reference) And David answered the priest, and said unto him, Of a truth women [have been] kept from us about these three days, since I came out, and the (d) vessels of the young men are holy, and [the bread is] in a manner common, yea, though it (e) were sanctified this day in the vessel.
(d) That is, their bodies.
(e) Shall be more careful to keep his vessel holy, when he has eaten of this holy food.
(1Sa 21:6) So the Priest gaue him halowed bread: for there was no bread there, saue the shewe bread that was taken from before the Lord, to put hote bread there, the day that it was taken away.
(1Sa 21:7) (And there was the same day one of the seruants of Saul abiding before the Lord, named Doeg the Edomite, the chiefest of Sauls heardmen)
(Notes Reference) Now a certain man of the servants of Saul [was] there that day, (f) detained before the LORD; and his name [was] Doeg, an Edomite, the chiefest of the herdmen that [belonged] to Saul.
(f) Tarrying to worship before the ark.
(1Sa 21:8) And Dauid said vnto Ahimelech, Is there not here vnder thine hand a speare or a sworde? for I haue neither brought my sworde nor mine harnesse with me, because the Kings businesse required haste.
(1Sa 21:9) And the Priest said, The sword of Goliath the Philistim, whom thou slewest in the valley of Elah, behold, it is wrapt in a cloth behinde the Ephod: if thou wilt take that to thee, take it: for there is none other saue that here: And Dauid sayd, There is none to that, giue it me.
(Notes Reference) And the priest said, The sword of Goliath the Philistine, whom thou slewest in the valley of Elah, behold, it [is here] wrapped in a cloth behind the (g) ephod: if thou wilt take that, take [it]: for [there is] no other save that here. And David said, [There is] none like that; give it me.
(g) Behind that place where the high priests garment lay.
(1Sa 21:10) And Dauid arose and fled the same day from the presence of Saul, and went to Achish the King of Gath.
(Notes Reference) And David arose, and (h) fled that day for fear of Saul, and went to Achish the king of Gath.
(h) That is, out of Saul's domain.
(1Sa 21:11) And the seruants of Achish said vnto him, Is not this Dauid the King of the land? did they not sing vnto him in daunces, saying, Saul hath slayne his thousand, and Dauid his ten thousande?
(1Sa 21:12) And Dauid considered these wordes, and was sore afraide of Achish the King of Gath.
(1Sa 21:13) And hee changed his behauiour before them, and fayned him selfe mad in their handes, and scrabled on the doores of the gate, and let his spettel fall downe vpon his beard.
(Notes Reference) And he changed his behaviour before them, and feigned himself mad in their hands, and (i) scrabbled on the doors of the gate, and let his spittle fall down upon his beard.
(i) By making marks and toys.
(1Sa 21:14) Then said Achish vnto his seruants, Lo, ye see the man is beside him selfe, wherefore haue ye brought him to me?
(1Sa 21:15) Haue I neede of mad men, that ye haue brought this fellowe to play the mad man in my presence? shall he come into mine house?
(Notes Reference) Have I need of mad men, that ye have brought this [fellow] to play the mad man in my presence? (k) shall this [fellow] come into my house?
(k) Is he fit to be in a king's house.
(1Sa 22:1) Dauid therefore departed thence, and saued him selfe in the caue of Adullam: and when his brethren and all his fathers house heard it, they went downe thither to him.

(a) Which was in the tribe of Judah, near Bethlehem.
(1Sa 22:2) And there gathered vnto him all men that were in trouble and all men that were in dette, and all those that were vexed in minde, and he was their prince, and there were with him about foure hundreth men.
(1Sa 22:3) And Dauid went thence to Mizpeh in Moab, and said vnto the King of Moab, I pray thee, let my father and my mother come and abide with you, till I knowe what God wil doe for me.
(Notes Reference) And David went thence to Mizpeh of (b) Moab: and he said unto the king of Moab, Let my father and my mother, I pray thee, come forth, [and be] with you, till I know what God will do for me.
(b) For there was another so called in Judah.
(1Sa 22:4) And he brought them before the King of Moab, and they dwelt with him all the while that Dauid was in the holde.

(c) For he feared the rage of Saul against his house.
(d) That is, in Mizpeh, which was a stronghold.
(1Sa 22:5) And the Prophet Gad sayde vnto Dauid, Abide not in the holde, but depart and goe into the land of Iudah. Then Dauid departed and came into the forest of Hareth.
(1Sa 22:6) And Saul heard that Dauid was discouered, and the men that were with him, and Saul remayned in Gibeah vnder a tree in Ramah, hauing his speare in his hande, and all his seruants stoode about him.
(Notes Reference) When Saul heard that David was (e) discovered, and the men that [were] with him, (now Saul abode in Gibeah under a tree in Ramah, having his spear in his hand, and all his servants [were] standing about him;)
(e) That a great brute came on him.
(1Sa 22:7) And Saul said vnto his seruants that stood about him, Heare now, ye sonnes of Iemini, wil the sonne of Ishai giue euery one of you fields and vineyardes: will he make you all captaines ouer thousands, and captaines ouer hundreths:
(Notes Reference) Then Saul said unto his servants that stood about him, Hear now, ye (f) Benjamites; will the son of Jesse give every one of you fields and vineyards, [and] make you all captains of thousands, and captains of hundreds;
(f) You that are of my tribe and lineage.
(1Sa 22:8) That all ye haue conspired against me, and there is none that tellerh mee that my sonne hath made a couenant with the sonne of Ishai? and there is none of you that is sory for me, or sheweth mee, that my sonne hath stirred vp my seruant to lie in wayte against me, as appeareth this day?
(Notes Reference) That all of you have conspired against me, and [there is] none that sheweth me that my son hath made a league with the son of Jesse, and [there is] none of you that is sorry for me, or sheweth unto me that my (g) son hath stirred up my servant against me, to lie in wait, as at this day?
(g) By this he would persuade them that this conspiracy was most horrible, where the son conspired against the father, and the servant against his master.
(1Sa 22:9) Then answered Doeg the Edomite (who was appoynted ouer the seruants of Saul) and sayd, I saw the sonne of Ishai when he came to Nob, to Ahimelech the sonne of Ahitub,
(1Sa 22:10) Who asked counsell of the Lord for him and gaue him vitailes, and he gaue him also the sword of Goliath the Philistim.
(1Sa 22:11) Then the King sent to call Ahimelech the Priest the sonne of Ahitub, and all his fathers house, to wit, the Priests that were in Nob: and they came all to the King.

(h) Which were the remnant of the house of Eli, whose house God threatened to punish.
(1Sa 22:12) And Saul said, Heare now thou sonne of Ahitub. And he answered, Here I am, my lord.
(1Sa 22:13) Then Saul sayde vnto him, Why haue yee conspired against me, thou and the sonne of Ishai, in that thou hast giuen him vitaile, and a sworde, and hast asked counsell of God for him, that he should rise against me, and lye in wayte as appeareth this day?
(1Sa 22:14) And Ahimelech answered the King, and sayde, Who is so faithfull among all thy seruants as Dauid, being also the Kings sonne in lawe, and goeth at thy commandement, and is honourable in thine house?
(1Sa 22:15) Haue I this day first begun to aske counsell of God for him? be it farre from mee, let not the King impute any thing vnto his seruant, nor to all the house of my father: for thy seruant knew nothing of all this, lesse nor more.
(Notes Reference) (i) Did I then begin to enquire of God for him? be it far from me: let not the king impute [any] thing unto his servant, [nor] to all the house of my father: for thy servant knew nothing of all this, less or more.
(i) Have I not at other times also, when he had great affairs, consulted with the Lord for him?
(1Sa 22:16) Then the King sayd, Thou shalt surely die, Ahimelech, thou, and all thy fathers house.
(1Sa 22:17) And the King sayde vnto the sergeantes that stoode about him, Turne, and slay the Priestes of the Lord, because their hand also is with Dauid, and because they knewe when he fled, and shewed it not vnto mee. But the seruantes of the King would not moue their hands to fall vpon the Priests of the Lord.
(Notes Reference) And the king said unto the footmen that stood about him, Turn, and slay the priests of the LORD; because their hand also [is] with David, and because they knew when he fled, and did not shew it to me. But the servants of the king (k) would not put forth their hand to fall upon the priests of the LORD.
(k) For they knew that they should not obey the wicked commandment of the king in slaying the innocent.
(1Sa 22:18) Then the King sayde to Doeg, Turne thou and fall vpon the Priests. And Doeg the Edomite turned, and ran vpon the Priestes, and slewe that same daye foure score and fiue persons that did weare a linen Ephod.
(1Sa 22:19) Also Nob the citie of the Priestes smote he with the edge of the sword, both man and woman, both childe and suckling, both oxe and asse, and sheepe with the edge of the sword.
(1Sa 22:20) But one of the sonnes of Ahimelech the sonne of Ahitub (whose name was Abiathar) escaped and fled after Dauid.
(Notes Reference) And one of the sons of Ahimelech the son of Ahitub, named Abiathar, (l) escaped, and fled after David.
(l) This was God's providence, who according to his promise preserved some of the house of Eli, (1Sa 2:33).
(1Sa 22:21) And Abiathar shewed Dauid, that Saul had slayne the Lords Priestes.
(1Sa 22:22) And Dauid sayd vnto Abiathar, I knewe it the same day, when Doeg the Edomite was there, that he would tell Saul. I am the cause of the death of all the persons of thy fathers house.
(1Sa 22:23) Abide thou with me, and feare not: for he that seeketh my life, shall seeke thy life also: for with me thou shalt be in safegard.
Passage 2: Isaiah 65
(Isa 65:1) I have bene sought of them that asked not: I was found of them that sought me not: I sayd, Beholde me, beholde me, vnto a nation that called not vpon my Name.
(Notes Reference) I am sought by [them that] (a) asked not [for me]; I am found by [them that] sought me not: I said, Behold me, behold me, to a nation [that] was not called by my name.
(a) Meaning, the Gentiles who know not God, would seek him, when he had moved their heart with his Holy Spirit, (Rom 10:20).
(Isa 65:2) I haue spred out mine handes all the day vnto a rebellious people, which walked in a way that was not good, euen after their owne imaginations:
(Notes Reference) I have (b) spread out my hands all the day to a rebellious people, which walketh in a way [that is] not good, after their own (c) thoughts;
(b) He shows the reason for the rejection of the Jews, because they would not obey him or any admonition of his prophets, by whom he called them continually and stretch out his hand to draw them.
(c) He shows that to delight in our own fantasies is the declining from God and the beginning of all superstitions and idolatry.
(Isa 65:3) A people that prouoked me euer vnto my face: that sacrificeth in gardens, and burneth incense vpon brickes.
(Notes Reference) A people that provoketh me to anger continually to my face; that sacrificeth in (d) gardens, and burneth incense upon altars of (e) brick;
(d) Which were dedicated to idols.
(e) Meaning their altars, which he thus named by contempt.
(Isa 65:4) Which remaine among the graues, and lodge in the desarts, which eate swines flesh, and the broth of things polluted are in their vessels.
(Notes Reference) Which remain among the (f) graves, and lodge in the monuments, which eat (g) swine's flesh, and broth of abominable [things is in] their vessels;
(f) To consult with spirits, and to conjure devils, which was forbidden.
(g) Which was contrary to God's commandment, (Lev 11:7; Deu 14:8).
(Isa 65:5) Which say, Stand apart, come not neere to me: for I am holier then thou: these are a smoke in my wrath and a fire that burneth all the day.
(Notes Reference) Which say, (h) Stand by thyself, come not near to me; for I am holier than thou. These [are] a smoke in my nose, a fire that (i) burneth all the day.
(h) He shows that hypocrisy is always joined with pride and contempt of others.
(i) Their punishment will never have an end.
(Isa 65:6) Beholde, it is written before me: I wil not keepe silence, but will render it and recompense it into their bosome.
(Notes Reference) Behold, [it is] (k) written before me: I will not keep silence, but will recompense, even recompense into their bosom,
(k) So that the remembrance of it cannot be forgotten.
(Isa 65:7) Your iniquities and the iniquities of your fathers shalbe together (sayth the Lord) which haue burnt incense vpon the mountaines, and blasphemed me vpon the hilles: therefore wil I measure their olde worke into their bosome.
(Notes Reference) Your iniquities, and the iniquities of your fathers (l) together, saith the LORD, who have burned incense upon the mountains, and blasphemed me upon the hills: therefore will I measure their former work into their bosom.
(l) Will be both punished together: and this declares how the children are punished for their fathers faults, that is, when the same faults or like are found in them.
(Isa 65:8) Thus sayth the Lord, As the wine is found in the cluster, and one sayth, Destroy it not, for a blessing is in it, so will I doe for my seruants sakes, that I may not destroy them whole.
(Notes Reference) Thus saith the LORD, As the new wine is found in the cluster, and [one] saith, Destroy it not; for a (m) blessing [is] in it: so will I do for my servants' sake, that I may not destroy them all.
(m) That is, it is profitable: meaning that God will not destroy the faithful branches of his vineyard, when he destroys the rotten stocks, that is, the hypocrites.
(Isa 65:9) But I will bring a seede out of Iaakob, and out of Iudah, that shall inherit my mountaine: and mine elect shall inherit it, and my seruants shall dwell there.
(Isa 65:10) And Sharon shalbe a sheepefolde, and the valley of Achor shalbe a resting place for the cattell of my people, that haue sought me.
(Notes Reference) And (n) Sharon shall be a fold of flocks, and the valley of Achor a place for the herds to lie down in, for my people that have sought me.
(n) Which was a plentiful place in Judea to feed sheep, as Achor was for cattle.
(Isa 65:11) But ye are they that haue forsaken the Lord and forgotten mine holy Mountaine, and haue prepared a table for the multitude, and furnish the drinke offerings vnto the number.
(Notes Reference) But ye [are] they that forsake the LORD, that forget my holy mountain, that prepare a table for that (o) troop, and that furnish the drink offering to that number.
(o) By the multitude and number he means their innumerable idols of whom they thought they could never have enough.
(Isa 65:12) Therefore wil I number you to the sword, and all you shall bowe downe to the slaughter, because I called, and ye did not answere: I spake, and ye heard not, but did euil in my sight, and did chuse that thing which I would not.
(Notes Reference) Therefore will I (p) number you to the sword, and ye shall all bow down to the slaughter: because when I called, ye did not answer; when I (q) spoke, ye did not hear; but did evil before my eyes, and did choose [that] in which I delighted not.
(p) Seeing you cannot number your gods, I will number you with the sword.
(q) By my prophets, whom you would not obey.
(Isa 65:13) Therefore thus saith the Lord God, Beholde, my seruants shall eate, and ye shalbe hungrie: beholde, my seruants shall drinke, and ye shall be thirstie: beholde, my seruants shall reioyce, and ye shalbe ashamed.
(Notes Reference) Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, my servants shall (r) eat, but ye shall be hungry: behold, my servants shall drink, but ye shall be thirsty: behold, my servants shall rejoice, but ye shall be ashamed:
(r) By these words, eat and drink, he means the blessed life of the faithful, who have always had consolation and full contentment of all things in their God, though sometimes they lack these corporal things.
(Isa 65:14) Beholde, my seruants shall sing for ioye of heart, and ye shall crye for sorow of heart, and shall howle for vexation of minde.
(Isa 65:15) And ye shall leaue your name as a curse vnto my chosen: for the Lord God shall slay you and call his seruants by another name.
(Notes Reference) And ye shall leave your name for a curse to my (s) chosen: for the Lord GOD shall slay thee, and call his servants by (t) another name:
(s) Meaning, that he would call the Gentiles, who would abhor even the very name of the Jews for their infidelities sake.
(t) Than by the name of the Jews.
(Isa 65:16) He that shall blesse in the earth, shall blesse himselfe in the true God, and he that sweareth in the earth, shall sweare by the true God: for the former troubles are forgotten, and shall surely hide themselues from mine eyes.
(Notes Reference) That he who blesseth himself in the (u) earth shall bless himself in the God of truth; and he that sweareth in the earth shall swear by the God of truth; because the former (x) troubles are forgotten, and because they are hid from my eyes.
(u) By blessing, and by swearing is meant the praising of God for his benefits, and the true worshipping of him, who will not be only in Judea, but through all the world.
(x) I will no longer permit my Church to be desolate as in times past.
(Isa 65:17) For lo, I will create newe heauens and a new earth: and the former shall not be remembred nor come into minde.
(Notes Reference) For, behold, I create (y) new heavens and a new earth: and the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind.
(y) I will so altar and change the state of my church, that it will seem to dwell in a new world.
(Isa 65:18) But be you glad and reioyce for euer in the things that I shall create: for beholde, I will create Ierusalem, as a reioycing and her people as a ioye,
(Isa 65:19) And I wil reioyce in Ierusalem, and ioye in my people, and the voyce of weeping shall be no more heard in her, nor the voyce of crying.
(Isa 65:20) There shall be no more there a childe of yeeres, nor an olde man that hath not filled his dayes: for he that shall be an hundreth yeeres old, shall dye as a yong man: but the sinner being an hundreth yeeres olde shall be accursed.
(Notes Reference) There shall be no more from there an infant of days, nor an old man that hath (z) not filled his days: for the child shall die an hundred years old; but the sinner [being] (a) an hundred years old shall be accursed.
(z) Meaning, in this wonderful restoration of the Church there would be no weakness of youth, nor infirmities of age, but all would be fresh and flourishing: and this is accomplished in the heavenly Jerusalem, when all sins will cease, and the tears will be wiped away.
(a) By which he shows that the infidels and unrepentant sinners have no part of this benediction.
(Isa 65:21) And they shall build houses and inhabite them, and they shall plant vineyards, and eate the fruite of them.
(Notes Reference) And they shall (b) build houses, and inhabit [them]; and they shall plant vineyards, and eat the fruit of them.
(b) He proposes to the faithful the blessings which are contained in the law, and so under temporal things comprehends the spiritual promises.
(Isa 65:22) They shall not build, and another inhabite: they shall not plant, and another eate: for as the dayes of the tree are the dayes of my people, and mine elect shall inioye in olde age the worke of their handes.
(Isa 65:23) They shall not labour in vaine, nor bring forth in feare: for they are the seede of the blessed of the Lord, and their buds with them.
(Isa 65:24) Yea, before they call, I will answere, and whiles they speake, I will heare.
(Isa 65:25) The wolfe and the lambe shall feede together, and the lyon shall eate strawe like the bullocke: and to the serpent dust shall be his meate. They shall no more hurt nor destroy in all mine holy Mountaine, saith the Lord.
(Notes Reference) The (c) wolf and the lamb shall feed together, and the lion shall eat straw like the ox: and dust [shall be] the serpent's food. They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain, saith the LORD.
(c) Read (Isa 11:6).
Passage 3: Matthew 10
(Mat 10:1) And hee called his twelue disciples vnto him, and gaue them power against vncleane spirits, to cast them out, and to heale euery sickenesse, and euery disease.
(Notes Reference) And (1) when he had called unto [him] his twelve disciples, he gave them power [against] unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease.
(1) The apostles are sent to preach the gospel in Israel.
(Mat 10:2) Nowe the names of the twelue Apostles are these. The first is Simon, called Peter, and Andrew his brother: Iames the sonne of Zebedeus, and Iohn his brother.
(Notes Reference) Now the names of the twelve apostles are these; The (a) first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James [the son] of Zebedee, and John his brother;
(a) Theophylact says that Peter and Andrew are called the first, because they were first called.
(Mat 10:3) Philippe and Bartlemewe: Thomas, and Matthewe that Publicane: Iames the sonne of Alpheus, and Lebbeus whose surname was Thaddeus:
(Mat 10:4) Simon the Cananite, and Iudas Iscariot, who also betraied him.
(Notes Reference) Simon the Canaanite, and Judas (b) Iscariot, who also betrayed him.
(b) A man of Kerioth. Now Kerioth was in the tribe of Judah; (Jos 15:25).
(Mat 10:5) These twelue did Iesus send forth, and commanded them, saying, Goe not into the way of of the Gentiles, and into the cities of the Samaritans enter yee not:
(Mat 10:6) But goe rather to the lost sheepe of the house of Israel.
(Mat 10:7) And as ye goe, preach, saying, The kingdome of heauen is at hand.
(Notes Reference) (2) And as ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand.
(2) The sum of the gospel, or preaching of the apostles.
(Mat 10:8) Heale the sicke: cleanse the lepers: raise vp the dead: cast out the deuils. Freely ye haue receiued, freely giue.
(Notes Reference) (3) Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give.
(3) Miracles are signs verifying the word.
(Mat 10:9) Possesse not golde, nor siluer, nor money in your girdels,
(Notes Reference) (4) Provide (c) neither gold, nor silver, nor brass in your purses,
(4) The ministers of the word must cast away all cares that might hinder them, even the least of them.
(c) For this journey, namely, both that nothing might hinder them, and also that they might feel some taste of God's providence: for at their return back, the Lord asked of them whether they lacked anything by the way, (Luk 22:35).
(Mat 10:10) Nor a scrippe for the iourney, neither two coates, neither shoes, nor a staffe: for the workeman is worthie of his meate.
(Notes Reference) Nor scrip for [your] journey, neither two coats, neither shoes, nor yet staves: for the workman is worthy of his (d) meat.
(d) God will provide you with food.
(Mat 10:11) And into whatsoeuer citie or towne ye shall come, enquire who is worthy in it, and there abide till yee goe thence.
(Notes Reference) (5) And into whatsoever city or town ye shall enter, enquire who in it is worthy; and there abide till ye go thence.
(5) Happy are they that receive the preaching of the gospel: and unhappy are they that refuse it.
(Mat 10:12) And when yee come into an house, salute the same.
(Mat 10:13) And if the house be worthy, let your peace come vpon it: but if it be not worthie, let your peace returne to you.
(Notes Reference) And if the house be worthy, let your (e) peace come upon it: but if it be not worthy, let your peace return to you.
(e) It is an idiom taken from the Hebrews, by which they meant every type of happiness.
(Mat 10:14) And whosoeuer shall not receiue you, nor heare your woordes, when yee depart out of that house, or that citie, shake off the dust of your feete.
(Mat 10:15) Truely I say vnto you, it shall be easier for them of the lande of Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of iudgement, then for that citie.
(Mat 10:16) Behold, I send you as sheepe in the middes of the wolues: be yee therefore wise as serpents, and innocent as doues.

(6) Christ shows how the ministers must behave themselves under the cross.
(f) You will be in great danger.
(g) You will not so much as take revenge for an injury: and by the mixing of these beast's natures together, he will not have our wisdom to be malicious, nor our simplicity mad, but a certain form of good nature which is composed exquisitely of both of them.
(Mat 10:17) But beware of men, for they will deliuer you vp to the Councils, and will scourge you in their Synagogues.
(Notes Reference) But beware of (h) men: for they will deliver you up to the councils, and they will scourge you in their synagogues;
(h) For in the cause of religion men are wolves to each other.
(Mat 10:18) And ye shall be brought to the gouernours and Kings for my sake, in witnes to them, and to the Gentiles.
(Mat 10:19) But when they deliuer you vp, take no thought howe or what ye shall speake: for it shall be giuen you in that houre, what ye shall say.
(Mat 10:20) For it is not yee that speake, but the spirite of your father which speaketh in you.
(Mat 10:21) And the brother shall betray the brother to death, and the father the sonne, and the children shall rise against their parents, and shall cause them to die.
(Mat 10:22) And yee shall be hated of all men for my Name: but he that endureth to the end, he shall be saued.
(Mat 10:23) And when they persecute you in this citie, flee into another: for verely I say vnto you, yee shall not goe ouer all the cities of Israel, till the Sonne of man be come.
(Notes Reference) But when they persecute you in this city, flee ye into another: for verily I say unto you, Ye shall not have (i) gone over the cities of Israel, till the Son of man be come.
(i) Bring to an end, that is, you will not have gone through all the cities of Israel and preached in them.
(Mat 10:24) The disciple is not aboue his master, nor the seruant aboue his Lord.
(Mat 10:25) It is ynough for the disciple to bee as his master is, and the seruaunt as his Lord. If they haue called the master of the house Beel-zebub, howe much more them of his housholde?
(Notes Reference) It is enough for the disciple that he be as his master, and the servant as his lord. If they have called the master of the house (k) Beelzebub, how much more [shall they call] them of his household?
(k) It was the idol of the Acronites, which we call the god of flies.
(Mat 10:26) Feare them not therefore: for there is nothing couered, that shall not be disclosed, nor hid, that shall not be knowen.
(Notes Reference) (l) Fear them not therefore: for there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; and hid, that shall not be known.
(l) Truth will not always be hidden.
(Mat 10:27) What I tell you in darkenesse, that speake yee in light: and what yee heare in the eare, that preach yee on the houses.
(Notes Reference) What I tell you in darkness, [that] speak ye in light: and what ye hear in the ear, [that] preach ye upon the (m) housetops.
(m) Openly, and in the highest places. For the tops of their houses were made in such a way that they might walk upon them; (Act 10:9).
(Mat 10:28) And feare yee not them which kill the bodie, but are nor able to kill the soule: but rather feare him, which is able to destroy both soule and bodie in hell.
(Notes Reference) And (n) fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.
(n) Though tyrants rage and are cruel, yet we must not fear them.
(Mat 10:29) Are not two sparrowes sold for a farthing, and one of them shall not fal on the ground without your Father?

(o) The fourth part of an ounce or seven grams.
(Mat 10:30) Yea, and all the heares of your head are nombred.
(Mat 10:31) Feare ye not therefore, yee are of more value then many sparowes.
(Mat 10:32) Whosoeuer therefore shall confesse me before men, him will I confesse also before my Father which is in heauen.
(Notes Reference) (7) Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven.
(7) The necessity and reward of openly confessing Christ.
(Mat 10:33) But whosoeuer shall denie me before me, him will I also denie before my Father which is in heauen.
(Mat 10:34) Thinke not that I am come to sende peace into the earth: I came not to send peace, but the sworde.
(Notes Reference) (8) Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.
(8) Civil dissentions follow the preaching of the gospel.
(Mat 10:35) For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in lawe.
(Mat 10:36) And a mans enemies shall be they of his owne housholde.
(Mat 10:37) He that loueth father or mother more then me, is not worthie of me. And he that loueth sonne, or daughter more then mee, is not worthie of me.
(Notes Reference) (9) He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.
(9) Without exception, nothing is to be preferred before our duty to God.
(Mat 10:38) And hee that taketh not his crosse, and followeth after me, is not worthie of me.
(Mat 10:39) He that will finde his life, shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake, shall finde it.
(Notes Reference) He that (p) findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it.
(p) They are said to find their life, who deliver it out of danger: and this is spoken against the opinion of the people, who think those that die are certainly lost, because they think not of the life to come.
(Mat 10:40) He that receiueth you, receiueth me: and hee that receiueth mee, receiueth him that hath sent me.
(Notes Reference) (10) He that receiveth you receiveth me, and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me.
(10) God is both author and revenger of his holy ministry.
(Mat 10:41) Hee that receiueth a Prophet in the name of a Prophet, shall receiue a Prophetes rewarde: and hee that receiueth a righteous man, in the name of a righteous man, shall receiue the rewarde of a righteous man.
(Notes Reference) (11) He that receiveth a prophet in (q) the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet's reward; and he that receiveth a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man's reward.
(11) We will lose nothing that is bestowed on Christ.
(q) As a Prophet.
(Mat 10:42) And whosoeuer shall giue vnto one of these litle ones to drinke a cuppe of colde water onely, in the name of a disciple, verely I say vnto you, he shall not lose his rewarde.
(Notes Reference) And whosoever shall give to drink unto one of these (r) little ones a cup of cold [water] only in the name of a disciple, verily I say unto you, he shall in no wise lose his reward.
(r) Who in the sight of the world are vile and abject.
