Passage 1: Numbers 6
(Num 6:1) And the Lord spake vnto Moses, saying,
(Num 6:2) Speake vnto the children of Israel, and say vnto them, When a man or a woman doeth separate themselues to vowe a vowe of a Nazarite to separate himselfe vnto the Lord,
(Notes Reference) Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When either man or woman shall separate [themselves] to vow a vow of a (a) Nazarite, to separate [themselves] unto the LORD:
(a) Who separated themselves from the world, and dedicated themselves to God: a figure which was accomplished in Christ.
(Num 6:3) He shall abstaine from wine and strong drinke, and shall drinke no sowre wine nor sowre drinke, nor shall drinke any licour of grapes, neither shall eate fresh grapes nor dryed.
(Num 6:4) As long as his abstinence endureth, shall hee eat nothing that is made of the wine of the vine, neither the kernels, nor the huske.
(Num 6:5) While hee is separate by his vowe, the rasor shall not come vpon his head, vntill the dayes be out, in the which he separateth him selfe vnto the Lord, he shalbe holy, and shall let the lockes of the heare of his head growe.
(Num 6:6) During the time that he separateth himselfe vnto the Lord, he shall come at no dead body:
(Notes Reference) All the days that he separateth [himself] unto the LORD he shall come at no (b) dead body.
(b) As at burials, or mournings.
(Num 6:7) Hee shall not make himselfe vncleane at the death of his father, or mother, brother, or sister: for the consecration of his God is vpon his head.
(Notes Reference) He shall not make himself unclean for his father, or for his mother, for his brother, or for his sister, when they die: because the consecration of his God [is] upon (c) his head.
(c) In that he allowed his hair to grow, he signified that he was consecrated to God.
(Num 6:8) All the dayes of his separation he shalbe holy to the Lord.
(Num 6:9) And if any dye suddenly by him, or hee beware, then the head of his consecration shall be defiled, and he shall shaue his head in the day of his clensing: in the seuenth day he shall shaue it.
(Notes Reference) And if any man die very suddenly by him, and he hath defiled the (d) head of his consecration; then he shall shave his head in the day of his cleansing, on the seventh day shall he shave it.
(d) Whose long hair is a sign that he is dedicated to God.
(Num 6:10) And in the eight day hee shall bring two turtles, or two yong pigeons to the Priest, at the doore of the Tabernacle of the Congregation.
(Num 6:11) Then the Priest shall prepare the one for a sinne offering, and the other for a burnt offering, and shall make an atonement for him, because he sinned by the dead: so shall he halowe his head the same day,
(Notes Reference) And the priest shall offer the one for a sin offering, and the other for a burnt offering, and make an atonement for him, for that he sinned by (e) the dead, and shall hallow his head that same day.
(e) By being present where the deceased was.
(Num 6:12) And he shall consecrate vnto the Lord the dayes of his separation, and shall bring a lambe of a yeere olde for a trespasse offering, and the first dayes shalbe voide: for his consecration was defiled.
(Notes Reference) And he shall (f) consecrate unto the LORD the days of his separation, and shall bring a lamb of the first year for a trespass offering: but the (g) days that were before shall be lost, because his separation was defiled.
(f) Beginning at the eighth day, when he is purified.
(g) So that he shall begin his vow anew.
(Num 6:13) This then is the lawe of the Nazarite: When the time of his consecration is out, he shall come to the doore of the Tabernacle of the Congregation,
(Num 6:14) And hee shall bring his offering vnto the Lord, an hee lambe of a yeere olde without blemish for a burnt offering, and a shee lambe of a yere olde without blemish for a sinne offring, and a ramme without blemish for peace offrings,
(Num 6:15) And a basket of vnleauened bread, of cakes of fine floure, mingled with oyle, and wafers of vnleauened bread anointed with oile, with their meate offring, and their drinke offrings:
(Num 6:16) The which the Priest shall bring before the Lord, and make his sinne offering and his burnt offering.
(Num 6:17) He shall prepare also the ram for a peace offring vnto the Lord, with the basket of vnleauened bread, and the Priest shall make his meate offring, and his drinke offring.
(Num 6:18) And the Nazarite shall shaue the head of his consecration at the doore of the Tabernacle of the Congregation, and shall take the heare of the head of his consecration, and put it in the fire, which is vnder the peace offring.
(Notes Reference) And the Nazarite shall shave the head (h) of his separation [at] the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, and shall take the hair of the head of his separation, and (i) put [it] in the fire which [is] under the sacrifice of the peace offerings.
(h) In token that his vow is ended.
(i) For the hair which was consecrated to the Lord, might not be cast into any profane place.
(Num 6:19) Then the Priest shall take ye sodden shoulder of the ramme, and an vnleauened cake out of the basket, and a wafer vnleauened, and put them vpon the hands of the Nazarite, after he hath shauen his consecration.
(Num 6:20) And the Priest shall shake them to and from before the Lord: this is an holy thing for the Priest besides the shaken breast, and besides the heaue shoulder: so afterwarde the Nazarite may drinke wine.
(Num 6:21) This is the Lawe of the Nazarite, which he hath vowed, and of his offering vnto the Lord for his consecration, besides that that hee is able to bring: according to the vowe which he vowed, so shall he do after the lawe of his consecration.
(Notes Reference) This [is] the law of the Nazarite who hath vowed, [and of] his offering unto the LORD for his separation, (k) beside [that] that his hand shall get: according to the vow which he vowed, so he must do after the law of his separation.
(k) At the least he shall do this, if he is not able to offer more.
(Num 6:22) And the Lord spake vnto Moses, saying,
(Num 6:23) Speake vnto Aaron and to his sonnes, saying, Thus shall ye blesse the childre of Israel, and say vnto them,
(Notes Reference) Speak unto Aaron and unto his sons, saying, On this wise ye shall (l) bless the children of Israel, saying unto them,
(l) That is, pray for them.
(Num 6:24) The Lord blesse thee, and keepe thee,
(Num 6:25) The Lord make his face shine vpon thee, and be merciful vnto thee,
(Num 6:26) The Lord lift vp his coutenance vpon thee, and giue thee peace.
(Num 6:27) So they shall put my Name vpon the children of Israel, and I wil blesse them.
(Notes Reference) And they shall put my (m) name upon the children of Israel; and I will bless them.
(m) They shall pray in my Name for them.
Passage 2: Proverbs 3
(Pro 3:1) My sonne, forget not thou my Lawe, but let thine heart keepe my commandements.
(Pro 3:2) For they shall increase the length of thy dayes and the yeeres of life, and thy prosperitie.
(Notes Reference) For length of (a) days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to thee.
(a) Long life is the blessing of God which he gives to his, so far as it is expedient for them.
(Pro 3:3) Let not mercie and trueth forsake thee: binde them on thy necke, and write them vpon the table of thine heart.
(Notes Reference) Let not (b) mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy (c) neck; write them upon the table of thine (d) heart:
(b) By mercy and truth he means the commandments of the first and second table, or else the mercy and faithfulness that we ought to use toward our neighbours.
(c) Keep them as a precious jewel.
(d) Have them ever in remembrance.
(Pro 3:4) So shalt thou finde fauour and good vnderstanding in the sight of God and man.
(Pro 3:5) Trust in the Lord with all thine heart, and leane not vnto thine owne wisdome.
(Pro 3:6) In all thy wayes acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy wayes.
(Pro 3:7) Be not wise in thine owne eyes: but feare the Lord, and depart from euill.
(Pro 3:8) So health shalbe vnto thy nauel, and marowe vnto thy bones.
(Notes Reference) It shall be health to thy (e) navel, and marrow to thy bones.
(e) By this part he comprehends the whole body, as by health he means all the benefits promised in the law both corporal and spiritual.
(Pro 3:9) Honour the Lord with thy riches, and with the first fruites of all thine increase.
(Notes Reference) (f) Honour the LORD with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase:
(f) As was commanded in the law, (Exo 23:19; Deu 26:2) and by this they acknowledged that God was the giver of all things, and that they were ready to bestow all at his commandment.
(Pro 3:10) So shall thy barnes be filled with abundance, and thy presses shall burst with newe wine.
(Notes Reference) So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall (g) burst out with new wine.
(g) For the faithful distributor God gives in greater abundance.
(Pro 3:11) My sonne, refuse not the chastening of the Lord, neither be grieued with his correction.
(Pro 3:12) For the Lord correcteth him, whome he loueth, euen as the father doeth the childe in whom he deliteth.
(Pro 3:13) Blessed is the man that findeth wisedome, and the man that getteth vnderstanding.
(Pro 3:14) For the marchandise thereof is better then the marchandise of siluer, and the gaine thereof is better then golde.
(Pro 3:15) It is more precious then pearles: and all things that thou canst desire, are not to be compared vnto her.
(Pro 3:16) Length of dayes is in her right hand, and in her left hand riches and glory.
(Notes Reference) Length of days [is] in her right hand; (h) [and] in her left hand riches and honour.
(h) Meaning, that he seeks wisdom, that is, suffers himself to be governed by the Word of God, will have all prosperity both corporal and spiritual.
(Pro 3:17) Her wayes are wayes of pleasure, and all her pathes prosperitie.
(Pro 3:18) She is a tree of life to them that lay holde on her, and blessed is he that retaineth her.
(Notes Reference) She [is] a tree (i) of life to them that lay hold upon her: and happy [is every one] that retaineth her.
(i) Which brings forth such fruit that they who eat of it have life and he alludes to the tree of life in paradise.
(Pro 3:19) The Lord by wisdome hath layde the foundation of the earth, and hath stablished the heauens through vnderstanding.
(Notes Reference) The LORD by wisdom hath (k) founded the earth; by understanding hath he established the heavens.
(k) By this he shows that this wisdom of which he speaks is everlasting, because it was before all creatures and that all things even the whole world were made by it.
(Pro 3:20) By his knowledge the depthes are broken vp, and the cloudes droppe downe the dewe.
(Pro 3:21) My sonne, let not these things depart from thine eyes, but obserue wisdome, and counsell.
(Pro 3:22) So they shalbe life to thy soule, and grace vnto thy necke.
(Pro 3:23) Then shalt thou walke safely by thy way: and thy foote shall not stumble.
(Pro 3:24) If thou sleepest, thou shalt not bee afraide, and when thou sleepest, thy sleepe shalbe sweete.
(Pro 3:25) Thou shalt not feare for any sudden feare, neither for the destruction of the wicked, when it commeth.
(Notes Reference) (l) Be not afraid of sudden fear, neither of the desolation of the wicked, when it cometh.
(l) For when God destroys the wicked he will save his as he did Lot in Sodom.
(Pro 3:26) For the Lord shall be for thine assurance, and shall preserue thy foote from taking.
(Pro 3:27) Withhold not the good from the owners thereof, though there be power in thine hand to doe it.
(Notes Reference) Withhold not good from (m) them to whom it is due, when it is in the power of thine hand to do [it].
(m) Not only from them to whom the possession belongs but also you shall not keep it from them who have need of the use of it.
(Pro 3:28) Say not vnto thy neighbour, Go and come againe, and to morow wil I giue thee, if thou now haue it.
(Pro 3:29) Intend none hurt against thy neighbour, seeing he doeth dwell without feare by thee.
(Notes Reference) Devise not evil against thy neighbour, seeing he dwelleth (n) securely by thee.
(n) That is, puts his trust in you.
(Pro 3:30) Striue not with a man causelesse, when he hath done thee no harme.
(Pro 3:31) Bee not enuious for the wicked man, neither chuse any of his wayes.
(Notes Reference) (o) Envy thou not the oppressor, and choose none of his ways.
(o) Do not wish to be like him.
(Pro 3:32) For the frowarde is abomination vnto the Lord: but his secret is with the righteous.
(Notes Reference) For the froward [is] abomination to the LORD: but his (p) secret [is] with the righteous.
(p) That is, his covenant and fatherly affection which is hid and secret from the world.
(Pro 3:33) The curse of the Lord is in the house of the wicked: but he blesseth the habitation of the righteous.
(Pro 3:34) With the scornefull he scorneth, but hee giueth grace vnto the humble.
(Notes Reference) Surely (q) he scorneth the scorners: but he giveth grace unto the lowly.
(q) He will show by his plagues that their scorn will turn to their own destruction, (Pro 1:26).
(Pro 3:35) The wise shall inherite glorie: but fooles dishonour, though they be exalted.
Passage 3: Luke 17
(Luk 17:1) Then said he to his disciples, It can not be auoided, but that offences will come, but wo be to him by whome they come.
(Notes Reference) Then said he unto the disciples, (1) It is impossible but that offences will come: but woe [unto him], through whom they come!
(1) The Church is of necessity subject to offences, but the Lord will not suffer them unpunished, if any of the least be offended.
(Luk 17:2) It is better for him that a great milstone were hanged about his necke, and that he were cast into ye sea, then that he should offende one of these litle ones.
(Luk 17:3) Take heede to your selues: if thy brother trespasse against thee, rebuke him: and if hee repent, forgiue him.
(Notes Reference) (2) Take heed to yourselves: If thy brother trespass against thee, rebuke him; and if he repent, forgive him.
(2) Our reprehensions must be just and proceed from love and charity.
(Luk 17:4) And though he sinne against thee seuen times in a day, and seuen times in a day turne againe to thee, saying, It repenteth mee, thou shalt forgiue him.
(Luk 17:5) And the Apostles saide vnto the Lord, Increase our faith.
(Notes Reference) (3) And the apostles said unto the Lord, Increase our faith.
(3) God will never be utterly lacking to the godly (although he may not be as thorough with them as they wish) even in those difficulties which cannot be overcome by man's reason.
(Luk 17:6) And the Lord said, If ye had faith, as much as is a graine of mustard seede, and should say vnto this mulberie tree, Plucke thy selfe vp by the rootes, and plant thy selfe in the sea, it should euen obey you.
(Notes Reference) And the Lord said, If ye had faith as (a) a grain of mustard seed, ye might say unto this sycamine tree, Be thou plucked up by the root, and be thou planted in the sea; and it should obey you.
(a) If you had no more faith, but the quantity of the grain of mustard seed.
(Luk 17:7) Who is it also of you, that hauing a seruant plowing or feeding cattell, woulde say vnto him by and by, when hee were come from the fielde, Goe, and sit downe at table?
(Notes Reference) (4) But which of you, having a servant plowing or feeding cattle, will say unto him by and by, when he is come from the field, Go and sit down to meat?
(4) Seeing that God may rightfully claim for himself both us and all that is ours, he cannot be indebted to us for anything, although we labour mightily until we die.
(Luk 17:8) And woulde not rather say to him, Dresse wherewith I may suppe, and girde thy selfe, and serue mee, till I haue eaten and drunken, and afterward eate thou, and drinke thou?
(Luk 17:9) Doeth he thanke that seruant, because hee did that which was commanded vnto him? I trowe not.
(Luk 17:10) So likewise yee, when yee haue done all those things, which are commanded you, say, We are vnprofitable seruants: wee haue done that which was our duetie to doe.
(Notes Reference) (5) So likewise ye, when ye shall have done all those things which are commanded you, say, We are unprofitable servants: we have done that which was our duty to do.
(5) No matter how perfectly we may keep the law, it deserves no reward.
(Luk 17:11) And so it was when he went to Hierusalem, that he passed through the middes of Samaria, and Galile.
(Notes Reference) (6) And it came to pass, as he went to Jerusalem, that he passed through the midst of Samaria and Galilee.
(6) Christ does good even to those who will be unthankful, but the benefits of God to salvation only profit those who are thankful.
(Luk 17:12) And as hee entred into a certaine towne, there met him tenne men that were lepers, which stoode a farre off.
(Luk 17:13) And they lift vp their voyces and saide, Iesus, Master, haue mercie on vs.
(Luk 17:14) And when he saw them, he said vnto them, Goe, shewe your selues vnto the Priestes. And it came to passe, that as they went, they were clensed.
(Luk 17:15) Then one of them, when hee sawe that hee, was healed, turned backe, and with a loude voyce praised God,
(Luk 17:16) And fell downe on his face at his feete, and gaue him thankes: and he was a Samaritan.
(Luk 17:17) And Iesus answered, and said, Are there not tenne clensed? but where are the nine?
(Luk 17:18) There is none founde that returned to giue God praise, saue this stranger.
(Luk 17:19) And he saide vnto him, Arise, goe thy way, thy faith hath saued thee.
(Luk 17:20) And when hee was demaunded of the Pharises, when the kingdome of God shoulde come, he answered them, and said, The kingdome of God commeth not with obseruation.
(Notes Reference) (7) And when he was demanded of the Pharisees, when the kingdom of God should come, he answered them and said, The kingdom of God cometh not with (b) observation:
(7) The kingdom of God is not discerned by many although it is most present before their eyes, because they foolishly persuade themselves that it is to come with outward pomp.
(b) With any outward pomp and show of majesty to be known by: for there were still many plain and evident tokens by which men might have understood that Christ was the Messiah, whose kingdom had been so long looked for: but he speaks in this place of those signs which the Pharisees dreamed of, who looked for an earthly Messianic kingdom.
(Luk 17:21) Neither shall men say, Loe here, or lo there: for behold, the kingdome of God is within you.
(Notes Reference) Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is (c) within you.
(c) You look around for the Messiah as though he were absent, but he is amongst you in the midst of you.
(Luk 17:22) And he saide vnto the disciples, The dayes will come, when ye shall desire to see one of the dayes of the Sonne of man, and ye shall not see it.
(Notes Reference) (8) And he said unto the disciples, The days will come, when ye shall desire to see (d) one of the days of the Son of man, and ye shall not see [it].
(8) We often neglect those things when they are present which we afterward desire when they are gone, but in vain.
(d) The time will come when you will seek for the Son of Man with great sorrow of heart, and will not find him.
(Luk 17:23) Then they shall say to you, Behold here, or beholde there: but goe not thither, neither follow them.
(Notes Reference) (9) And they shall say to you, See here; or, see there: go not after [them], nor follow [them].
(9) Christ forewarns us that false Christs will come, and that his glory will suddenly be spread far and wide through the world after the shame of the cross is put out and extinguished.
(Luk 17:24) For as the lightening that lighteneth out of the one part vnder heauen, shineth vnto the other part vnder heauen, so shall the Sonne of man be in his day.
(Luk 17:25) But first must he suffer many things, and be reprooued of this generation.
(Luk 17:26) And as it was in the dayes of Noe, so shall it be in the dayes of the Sonne of man.
(Notes Reference) (10) And as it was in the days of Noe, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man.
(10) The world will be taken by surprise with the sudden judgment of God, and therefore the faithful ought to continually watch.
(Luk 17:27) They ate, they dranke, they married wiues, and gaue in marriage vnto the day that Noe went into the Arke: and the flood came, and destroyed them all.
(Luk 17:28) Likewise also, as it was in the dayes of Lot: they ate, they dranke, they bought, they solde, they planted, they built.
(Luk 17:29) But in the day that Lot went out of Sodom, it rained fire and brimstone from heauen, and destroyed them all.
(Luk 17:30) After these ensamples shall it be in the day when the Sonne of man is reueiled.
(Luk 17:31) At that day hee that is vpon the house, and his stuffe in ye house, let him not come downe to take it out: and he that is in the fielde likewise, let him not turne backe to that he left behinde.
(Notes Reference) (11) In that day, he which shall be upon the housetop, and his stuff in the house, let him not come down to take it away: and he that is in the field, let him likewise not return back.
(11) We must pay careful attention that neither distrust nor the enticements of this world, nor any consideration of friendship hinder us in the least way.
(Luk 17:32) Remember Lots wife.
(Luk 17:33) Whosoeuer will seeke to saue his soule, shall loose it: and whosoeuer shall loose it, shall get it life.
(Notes Reference) Whosoever shall seek to save his life shall lose it; and whosoever shall lose his life shall (e) preserve it.
(e) That is, will save it, as Matthew expounds it: for the life that is spoken of here is everlasting salvation.
(Luk 17:34) I tell you, in that night there shall be two in one bed: the one shalbe receiued, and the other shalbe left.
(Luk 17:35) Two women shalbe grinding together: the one shalbe taken, and the other shalbe left.
(Luk 17:36) Two shalbe in the fielde: one shalbe receiued, and another shalbe left.
(Luk 17:37) And they answered, and saide to him, Where, Lord? And he said vnto them, Wheresoeuer the body is, thither shall also the eagles bee gathered together.
(Notes Reference) (12) And they answered and said unto him, Where, Lord? And he said unto them, Wheresoever the body [is], thither will the eagles be gathered together.
(12) The only way to continue is to cleave to Christ.
