Passage 1: 2 Kings 17

(2Ki 17:1) In the twelft yeere of Ahaz King of Iudah began Hoshea the sonne of Elah to reigne in Samaria ouer Israel, and reigned nine yeeres.

(2Ki 17:2) And he did euill in the sight of the Lord, but not as the Kinges of Israel, that were before him.

(Notes Reference) And he did [that which was] evil in the sight of the LORD, (a) but not as the kings of Israel that were before him.

(a) Though he invented no new idolatry or impiety as others did, yet he sought help from the Egyptians, whom God had forbidden.

(2Ki 17:3) And Shalmaneser king of Asshur came vp against him, and Hoshea became his seruant, and gaue him presents.

(2Ki 17:4) And the King of Asshur founde treason in Hoshea: for he had sent messengers to So King of Egypt, and brought no present vnto the King of Asshur, as he had done yeerely: therfore the king of Asshur shut him vp, and put him in prison.

(b) For he had paid tribute for eight years.

(2Ki 17:5) Then the king of Asshur came vp throughout all the lande, and went against Samaria, and besieged it three yeere.

(2Ki 17:6) In the ninth yeere of Hoshea, the King of Asshur tooke Samaria, and caryed Israel away vnto Asshur, and put them in Halah, and in Habor by the riuer of Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes.

(Notes Reference) In the ninth year of Hoshea the king of Assyria took Samaria, and carried Israel away into Assyria, and placed them in Halah and in Habor [by] the river of Gozan, and in the cities of the (c) Medes.

(c) For at this time the Medes and Persians were subject to the Assyrians.

(2Ki 17:7) For when the children of Israel sinned against the Lord their God, which had brought them out of the land of Egypt, from vnder ye hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and feared other gods,

(Notes Reference) For [so] it was, that the children of Israel had (d) sinned against the LORD their God, which had brought them up out of the land of Egypt, from under the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and had feared other gods,

(d) He sets forth at length the cause of this great plague and perpetual captivity, to admonish all people, and nations to cleave to the Lord God, and worship only him for fear of similar judgment.

(2Ki 17:8) And walked according to the facions of the Heathen, whom the Lord had cast out before the children of Israel, and after the maners of the Kings of Israel, which they vsed,

(2Ki 17:9) And the children of Israel had done secretly things that were not vpright before the Lord their God, and throughout all their cities had built hie places, both from the tower of the watch, to the defensed citie,

(Notes Reference) And the children of Israel did secretly [those] things that [were] not right against the LORD their God, and they built them high places in all their cities, from the tower (e) of the watchmen to the fenced city.

(e) Meaning, throughout all their borders.

(2Ki 17:10) And had made them images and groues vpon euery hie hill, and vnder euery greene tree,

(2Ki 17:11) And there burnt incense in all the hie places, as did the heathen, whom the Lord had taken away before them, and wrought wicked things to anger the Lord,

(2Ki 17:12) And serued idoles: whereof the Lord had sayd vnto them, Ye shall do no such thing,

(2Ki 17:13) Notwithstanding the Lord testified to Israel, and to Iudah by all the Prophets, and by all the Seers, saying, Turne from your euill wayes, and keepe my commandements and my statutes, according to all the Lawe, which I commanded your fathers, and which I sent to you by my seruants the Prophets.

(2Ki 17:14) Neuerthelesse they would not obey, but hardened their neckes, like to the neckes of their fathers, that did not beleeue in the Lord their God.

(Notes Reference) Notwithstanding they would not hear, but hardened their necks, like to the neck of their (f) fathers, that did not believe in the LORD their God.

(f) So that to allege the authority of our fathers or great antiquity, except we can prove that they were godly, is but to declare that we are the children of the wicked.

(2Ki 17:15) And they refused his statutes and his couenant, that he made with their fathers, and his testimonies (wherewith he witnessed vnto them) and they followed vanitie, and became vaine, and followed the heathen that were round about them: concerning whome the Lord had charged them, that they should not do like them.

(2Ki 17:16) Finally they left all the commandements of the Lord their God, and made them molten images, euen two calues, and made a groue, and worshipped all the hoste of heauen, and serued Baal.

(g) That is, the sun, moon and stars, (Deu 4:19).

(2Ki 17:17) And they made their sonnes and their daughters passe thorowe the fire, and vsed witchcraft and inchantments, yea, solde them selues to doe euill in the sight of the Lord, to anger him.

(Notes Reference) And they caused their sons and their daughters to (h) pass through the fire, and used divination and enchantments, and (i) sold themselves to do evil in the sight of the LORD, to provoke him to anger.

(h) Read (2Ki 16:3).

(i) Read of this phrase in (1Ki 21:20, 1Ki 21:25).

(2Ki 17:18) Therefore the Lord was exceeding wroth with Israel, and put them out of his sight, and none was left but the tribe of Iudah onely.

(Notes Reference) Therefore the LORD was very angry with Israel, and removed them out of his sight: there was none left but the tribe of Judah (k) only.

(k) No whole tribe was left but Judah, and they of Benjamin and Levi who remained were counted with Judah.

(2Ki 17:19) Yet Iudah kept not the commandements of the Lord their God, but walked according to the facion of Israel, which they vsed.

(2Ki 17:20) Therefore the Lord cast off all the seede of Israel, and afflicted them, and deliuered them into the handes of spoylers, vntill he had cast them out of his sight.

(Notes Reference) And the LORD rejected all the seed of Israel, and afflicted them, and delivered them into the hand of spoilers, until he had cast them out of his (l) sight.

(l) Out of the land where he showed the greatest tokens of his presence and favour.

(2Ki 17:21) For he cut off Israel from the house of Dauid, and they made Ieroboam the sonne of Nebat King: and Ieroboam drewe Israel away from following the Lord, and made them sinne a great sinne.

(Notes Reference) (m) For he rent Israel from the house of David; and they made Jeroboam the son of Nebat king: and Jeroboam drave Israel from following the LORD, and made them sin a great sin.

(m) That is, God cut off the ten tribes, (1Ki 12:16, 1Ki 12:20).

(2Ki 17:22) For the children of Israel walked in all the sinnes of Ieroboam, which he did, and departed not therefrom,

(2Ki 17:23) Vntill the Lord put Israel away out of his sight, as he had said by all his seruants the Prophets, and caryed Israel away out of their land to Asshur vnto this day.

(2Ki 17:24) And the King of Asshur brought folke from Babel, and from Cuthah, and from Aua, and from Hamath, and from Sepharuaim, and placed them in the cities of Samaria in steade of the children of Israel: so they possessed Samaria, and dwelt in the cities thereof.

(Notes Reference) And the king of Assyria brought [men] from Babylon, and from (n) Cuthah, and from Ava, and from Hamath, and from Sepharvaim, and placed [them] in the cities of Samaria instead of the children of Israel: and they possessed Samaria, and dwelt in the cities thereof.

(n) Of these people came the Samaritans, of which mention is so often made in the gospel, and with whom the Jews would have nothing to do, (Joh 4:9).

(2Ki 17:25) And at the beginning of their dwelling there, they feared not the Lord: therefore the Lord sent lions among them, which slewe them.

(Notes Reference) And [so] it was at the beginning of their dwelling there, [that] they (o) feared not the LORD: therefore the LORD sent lions among them, which slew [some] of them.

(o) That is, they served him not: therefore, lest they should blaspheme him, as though there were no God, because he chastised the Israelites, he shows his mighty power among them by this strange punishment.

(2Ki 17:26) Wherefore they spake to the King of Asshur, saying, The nations which thou hast remoued, and placed in the cities of Samaria, knowe not the maner of the God of the land: therefore he hath sent lions among them, and behold, they slay them, because they knowe not the maner of the God of the land.

(2Ki 17:27) Then the King of Asshur commanded, saying, Carie thither one of the Priestes whome ye brought thence, and let him goe and dwell there, and teache them the maner of the God of the countrey.

(Notes Reference) Then the king of Assyria commanded, saying, Carry thither one of the priests whom ye brought from thence; and let them go and dwell there, and let him teach them the manner of the God (p) of the land.

(p) That is, how to worship him: thus the wicked rather than losing their conveniences will change to all religions.

(2Ki 17:28) So one of the Priestes, which they had caryed from Samaria, came and dwelt in Beth-el, and taught them how they shoulde feare the Lord.

(2Ki 17:29) Howbeit euery nation made their gods, and put them in the houses of the hie places, which the Samaritanes had made, euery nation in their cities, wherein they dwelt.

(2Ki 17:30) For the men of Babel made Succoth-Benoth: and the men of Cuth made Nergal, and the men of Hamath made Ashima,

(Notes Reference) And the men of Babylon made (q) Succothbenoth, and the men of Cuth made Nergal, and the men of Hamath made Ashima,

(q) Meaning that every country served the idol that was most esteemed in the place to which they came.

(2Ki 17:31) And the Auims made Nibhaz, and Tartak: and the Sepharuims burnt their children in the fire to Adrammelech, and Anammelech the gods of Sepharuaim.

(2Ki 17:32) Thus they feared the Lord, and appoynted out Priestes out of them selues for the hie places, who prepared for them sacrifices in the houses of the hie places.

(2Ki 17:33) They feared the Lord, but serued their gods after the maner of the nations whome they caryed thence.

(Notes Reference) They (r) feared the LORD, and served their own gods, after the manner of the nations whom they carried away from thence.

(r) That is, they had a certain knowledge of God, and feared him because of the punishment, but they continued to be idolaters as do the papists who worship both God and idols: but this is not to fear God, as appears in (2Ki 17:34).

(2Ki 17:34) Vnto this day they doe after the olde maner: they neyther feare God, neyther doe after their ordinances, nor after their customes, nor after the Lawe, nor after the commandement, which the Lord commanded the children of Iaakob, whom he named Israel,

(Notes Reference) Unto this day they do after the former manners: they fear not the LORD, neither do they after (s) their statutes, or after their ordinances, or after the law and commandment which the LORD commanded the children of Jacob, whom he named Israel;

(s) He means by this the Israelites to whom God had given his commandments.

(2Ki 17:35) And with whom the Lord had made a couenant, and charged them, saying, Feare none other gods, nor bowe your selues to them, nor serue them, nor sacrifice to them:

(2Ki 17:36) But feare the Lord which brought you out of the land of Egypt with great power, and a stretched out arme: him feare ye, and worshippe him, and sacrifice to him.

(2Ki 17:37) Also keepe ye diligently the statutes and the ordinances, and the Lawe, and the commandement, which he wrote for you, that ye do them continually, and feare not other gods.

(2Ki 17:38) And forget not the couenant that I haue made with you, neither feare ye other gods,

(2Ki 17:39) But feare the Lord your God, and he will deliuer you out of the handes of all your enemies.

(2Ki 17:40) Howbeit they obeyed not, but did after their olde custome.

(2Ki 17:41) So these nations feared the Lord, and serued their images also: so did their children, and their childrens children: as did their fathers, so do they vnto this day.

(Notes Reference) So these (t) nations feared the LORD, and served their graven images, both their children, and their children's children: as did their fathers, so do they unto this day.

(t) That is, these strangers who were sent into Samaria by the Assyrians.


Passage 2: Ezekiel 7

(Eze 7:1) Moreover the word of the Lord came vnto me, saying,

(Eze 7:2) Also thou sonne of man, thus saith the Lord God, An ende is come vnto the lande of Israel: the ende is come vpon the foure corners of the lande.

(Eze 7:3) Nowe is the ende come vpon thee, and I wil sende my wrath vpon thee, and will iudge thee according to thy wayes, and will laye vpon thee all thine abominations.

(Notes Reference) Now [is] the end [come] upon thee, and I will send my anger upon thee, and will judge thee according to thy ways, and will recompense upon thee all (a) thy abominations.

(a) I will punish you as you have deserved for your idolatry.

(Eze 7:4) Neither shall mine eye spare thee, neither will I haue pitie: but I will laye thy waies vpon thee: and thine abomination shall bee in the middes of thee, and yee shall knowe that I am the Lord.

(Eze 7:5) Thus saith the Lord God, Beholde, one euil, euen one euill is come.

(Eze 7:6) An ende is come, the end is come, it watched for thee: beholde, it is come.

(Notes Reference) An end is come, the end is come: it (b) watcheth for thee; behold, it is come.

(b) He shows that the judgments of God ever watch to destroy the sinners, who notwithstanding he delays till there is no more hope of repentance.

(Eze 7:7) The morning is come vnto thee, that dwellest in the lande: the time is come, the day of trouble is neere, and not the sounding againe of the mountaines.

(Notes Reference) The (c) morning is come upon thee, O thou that dwellest in the land: the time is come, the day of trouble [is] near, and not the joyful (d) shouting upon the mountains.

(c) The beginning of his punishments is already come.

(d) Which was a voice of joy and mirth.

(Eze 7:8) Now I will shortly powre out my wrath vpon thee, and fulfil mine anger vpon thee: I will iudge thee according to thy wayes, and will lay vpon thee all thine abominations.

(Eze 7:9) Neither shall mine eie spare thee, neither will I haue pitie, but I will laye vpon thee according to thy wayes, and thine abominations shalbe in the middes of thee, and ye shall knowe that I am the Lord that smiteth.

(Eze 7:10) Beholde, the day, beholde, it is come: the morning is gone forth, the rod florisheth: pride hath budded.

(Notes Reference) Behold the day, behold, it is come: the morning is gone forth; the (e) rod hath blossomed, (f) pride hath budded.

(e) The scourge is ready.

(f) That is, the proud tyrant Nebuchadnezzar has gathered his force and is ready.

(Eze 7:11) Crueltie is risen vp into a rod of wickednes: none of them shall remaine, nor of their riches, nor of any of theirs, neither shall there bee lamentation for them.

(Notes Reference) (g) Violence hath risen into a rod of wickedness: none of them [shall remain], nor of their multitude, nor of any of theirs: neither [shall there be] wailing for them.

(g) This cruel enemy will be a sharp scourge for their wickedness.

(Eze 7:12) The time is come, the day draweth neere: let not the byer reioyce, nor let him that selleth, mourne: for the wrath is vpon al the multitude thereof.

(Notes Reference) The time is come, the day draweth near: let not the buyer (i) rejoice, nor the seller (k) mourn: for wrath [is] upon all its multitude.

(i) For the present profit.

(k) For he will lose nothing.

(Eze 7:13) For hee that selleth, shall not returne to that which is solde, although they were yet aliue: for the vision was vnto al the multitude thereof, and they returned not, neither doeth any encourage himselfe in the punishment of his life.

(Notes Reference) For the seller shall not (l) return to that which is sold, although they were yet alive: for the (m) vision [is] concerning its whole multitude, [which] shall not return; (n) neither shall any strengthen himself in the iniquity of his life.

(l) In the year of the Jubile, meaning that none would enjoy the privilege of the law, (Lev 25:13) for they would all be carried away captives.

(m) This vision signified that all would be carried away, and none would return for the Jubile.

(n) No man for all this endeavours himself or takes heart to repent for his evil life. Some read, for none will be strengthened in his iniquity of his life: meaning that they would gain nothing by flattering themselves in evil.

(Eze 7:14) They haue blowen the trumpet, and prepared all, but none goeth to the battel: for my wrath is vpon all the multitude thereof.

(Notes Reference) (o) They have blown the trumpet, even to make all ready; but none goeth to the battle: for my wrath [is] upon all its multitude.

(o) The Israelites made a brag, but their hearts failed them.

(Eze 7:15) The sword is without, and the pestilence, and the famine within: he that is in the field, shall dye with the sword, and he that is in the citie, famine and pestilence shall deuoure him.

(Eze 7:16) But they that flee away from them, shall escape, and shalbe in the mountaines, like the doues of the valleis: all they shall mourne, euery one for his iniquitie.

(Eze 7:17) All handes shalbe weake, and all knees shall fall away as water.

(Eze 7:18) They shall also girde them selues with sackecloth, and feare shall couer them, and shame shalbe vpon all faces, and baldnes vpon their heads.

(Eze 7:19) They shall cast their siluer in the streetes, and their golde shalbe cast farre off: their siluer and their gold can not deliuer them in the day of the wrath of the Lord: they shall not satisfie their soules, neither fill their bowels: for this ruine is for their iniquitie.

(Eze 7:20) He had also set the beautie of his ornament in maiestie: but they made images of their abominations, and of their idoles therein: therefore haue I set it farre from them.

(Notes Reference) As for the beauty of his (p) ornament, he set it in majesty: but they made the images of their abominations [and] of their detestable things in it: therefore have I set it far from them.

(p) Meaning, the sanctuary.

(Eze 7:21) And I will giue it into the handes of the strangers to be spoyled, and to the wicked of the earth to be robbed, and they shall pollute it.

(Notes Reference) And I will give it into the hands of the (q) strangers for a prey, and to the wicked of the earth for a spoil; and they shall pollute it.

(q) That is, of the Babylonians.

(Eze 7:22) My face will I turne also from them, and they shall pollute my secret place: for the destroyers shall enter into it, and defile it.

(Notes Reference) My face will I turn also from them, and they shall pollute my (r) secret [place]: for the robbers shall enter into it, and defile it.

(r) Which signifies the most holy place, into which none might enter but the high priest.

(Eze 7:23) Make a chaine: for the lande is full of the iudgement of blood, and the citie is full of crueltie.

(Notes Reference) Make a (s) chain: for the land is full of (t) bloody crimes, and the city is full of violence.

(s) Signifying that they would be bound and led away captives.

(t) That is, of sins that deserve death.

(Eze 7:24) Wherefore I will bring the most wicked of the heathen, and they shall possesse their houses: I will also make the pompe of the mightie to cease, and their holie places shalbe defiled.

(Notes Reference) Wherefore I will bring the worst of the nations, and they shall possess their houses: I will also make the pomp of the strong to cease; and their (u) holy places shall be defiled.

(u) Which was the temple that was divided into three parts.

(Eze 7:25) When destruction commeth, they shall seeke peace, and shall not haue it.

(Eze 7:26) Calamitie shall come vpon calamitie, and rumour shall bee vpon rumour: then shall they seeke a vision of the Prophet: but the Lawe shall perish from the Priest, and counsel from the Ancient.

(Eze 7:27) The King shall mourne, and the prince shall be clothed with desolation, and the handes of the people in the land shall be troubled: I wil doe vnto them according to their waies, and according to their iudgements will I iudge them, and they shall knowe that I am the Lord.


Passage 3: Luke 3

(Luk 3:1) Nowe in the fifteenth yeere of the reigne of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being gouernour of Iudea, and Herod being Tetrarch of Galile, and his brother Philip Tetrarch of Iturea, and of the countrey of Trachonitis, and Lysanias the Tetrarch of Abilene,

(Notes Reference) Now (1) in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judaea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of Ituraea and of the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias the tetrarch of Abilene,

(1) John comes at the time foretold by the prophets and lays the foundation of the gospel which is exhibited unto us, setting forth the true observing of the law and free mercy in Christ, which comes after John, using also baptism which is the outward sign both of regeneration and also forgiveness of sins.

(Luk 3:2) (When Annas and Caiaphas were the hie Priestes) the worde of God came vnto Iohn, the sonne of Zacharias in the wildernes.

(Notes Reference) (a) Annas and Caiaphas being the high priests, the word of God came unto John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness.

(a) Josephus calls him Ananus.

(Luk 3:3) And hee came into all the coastes about Iordan, preaching the baptisme of repentance for the remission of sinnes,

(Luk 3:4) As it is written in the booke of the sayings of Esaias the Prophet, which saith, The voyce of him that crieth in the wildernes is, Prepare ye the way of the Lord: make his paths straight.

(Luk 3:5) Euery valley shalbe filled, and euery mountaine and hill shall be brought lowe, and crooked things shalbe made straight, and the rough wayes shalbe made smoothe.

(Luk 3:6) And all flesh shall see the saluation of God.

(Luk 3:7) Then said he to the people that were come out to be baptized of him, O generations of vipers, who hath forewarned you to flee from the wrath to come?

(Luk 3:8) Bring foorth therefore fruites worthy amendment of life, and beginne not to say with your selues, We haue Abraham to our father: for I say vnto you, that God is able of these stones to raise vp children vnto Abraham.

(Luk 3:9) Nowe also is the axe layed vnto the roote of the trees: therefore euery tree which bringeth not foorth good fruite, shalbe hewen downe, and cast into the fire.

(Luk 3:10) Then the people asked him, saying, What shall we doe then?

(Luk 3:11) And he answered, and said vnto them, He that hath two coates, let him part with him that hath none: and hee that hath meate, let him doe likewise.

(Luk 3:12) Then came there Publicanes also to bee baptized, and saide vnto him, Master, what shall we doe?

(Luk 3:13) And hee saide vnto them, Require no more then that which is appointed vnto you.

(Notes Reference) And he said unto them, Exact no more than that which is (b) appointed you.

(b) Require no more than that sum that is appointed for the tribute money.

(Luk 3:14) The souldiers likewise demaunded of him, saying, And what shall we doe? And he saide vnto them, Doe violence to no man, neither accuse any falsely, and be content with your wages.

(c) Which was paid to them partly in money and partly in food.

(Luk 3:15) As the people waited, and all men mused in their heartes of Iohn, if he were not that Christ,

(Notes Reference) (2) And as the people were in expectation, and all men mused in their hearts of John, whether he were the Christ, or not;

(2) If we would rightly and fruitfully receive the sacraments, we must neither rest in the signs, neither in him that ministers the signs, but lift up our eyes to Christ, who is the author of the sacraments, and the giver of that which is represented by the sacraments.

(Luk 3:16) Iohn answered, and saide to them all, In deede I baptize you with water, but one stronger then I, commeth, whose shoes latchet I am not worthy to vnloose: hee will baptize you with the holy Ghost, and with fire.

(Luk 3:17) Whose fanne is in his hande, and hee will make cleane his floore, and will gather the wheate into his garner, but the chaffe will hee burne vp with fire that neuer shalbe quenched.

(Notes Reference) (3) Whose fan [is] in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and will gather the wheat into his garner; but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable.

(3) The gospel is the fan of the world.

(Luk 3:18) Thus then exhorting with many other things, he preached vnto the people.

(Luk 3:19) But when Herod the Tetrarch was rebuked of him, for Herodias his brother Philips wife, and for all the euils which Herod had done,

(Notes Reference) (4) But Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him for Herodias his brother Philip's wife, and for all the evils which Herod had done,

(4) John's preaching is confirmed with his death.

(Luk 3:20) He added yet this aboue all, that he shut vp Iohn in prison.

(Luk 3:21) Nowe it came to passe, as all the people were baptized, and that Iesus was baptized and did pray, that the heauen was opened:

(Notes Reference) (5) Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened,

(5) Our baptism is sanctified in the head of the Church, and Christ also by the voice of the Father is pronounced to be our everlasting King, Priest, and Prophet.

(Luk 3:22) And the holy Ghost came downe in a bodily shape like a doue, vpon him, and there was a voyce from heauen, saying, Thou art my beloued Sonne: in thee I am well pleased.

(Luk 3:23) And Iesus himselfe began to bee about thirtie yeere of age, being as men supposed the sonne of Ioseph, which was the sonne of Eli,

(Notes Reference) (6) And Jesus himself began to be about thirty years of age, being (as was supposed) the son of Joseph, which was [the son] of Heli,

(6) Christ's lineage, according to the flesh, is traced back even to Adam, and so to God, that it might appear that it was only he whom God promised to Abraham and David, and appointed from everlasting to his Church, which is composed of all sorts of men.

(Luk 3:24) The sonne of Matthat, the sonne of Leui, the sonne of Melchi, the sonne of Ianna, the sonne of Ioseph,
