Passage 1: 1 Chronicles 6

(1Ch 6:1) The sonnes of Leui were Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.

(1Ch 6:2) And the sonnes of Kohath, Amram, Izhar, and Hebron, and Vzziel.

(1Ch 6:3) And the children of Amram, Aaron, and Moses and Miriam. And the sonnes of Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu, and Eleazar, and Ithamar.

(1Ch 6:4) Eleazar begate Phinehas. Phinehas begate Abishua,

(1Ch 6:5) And Abishua begate Bukki, and Bukki begate Vzzi,

(1Ch 6:6) And Vzzi begate Zerahiah, and Zerahiah begate Meraioth.

(1Ch 6:7) Meraioth begate Amariah, and Amariah begate Ahitub,

(1Ch 6:8) And Ahitub begate Zadok, and Zadok begate Ahimaaz,

(Notes Reference) And Ahitub begat (a) Zadok, and Zadok begat Ahimaaz,

(a) Who was high priest after Abiathar was deposed, according to the prophecy of Eli the priest, (1Sa 2:31, 1Sa 2:35).

(1Ch 6:9) And Ahimaaz begate Azariah, and Azariah begate Iohanan,

(1Ch 6:10) And Iohanan begate Azariah (it was hee that was Priest in the house that Salomon built in Ierusalem)

(b) And valiantly resisted king Uzziah, who would have usurped the priest's office (2Ch 26:17-18).

(1Ch 6:11) And Azariah begate Amariah, and Amariah begate Ahitub,

(1Ch 6:12) And Ahitub begate Zadok, and Zadok begate Shallum,

(1Ch 6:13) And Shallum begate Hilkiah, and Hilkiah begate Azariah,

(1Ch 6:14) And Azariah begate Seraiah, and Seraiah begate Iehozadak,

(1Ch 6:15) And Iehozadak departed when the Lord caried away into captiuitie Iudah and Ierusalem by the hand of Nebuchad-nezzar.

(Notes Reference) And (c) Jehozadak went [into captivity], when the LORD carried away Judah and Jerusalem by the hand of Nebuchadnezzar.

(c) That is, he was led into captivity with his father Seraiah the high priest, (2Ki 25:18).

(1Ch 6:16) The sonnes of Leui were Gershom, Kohath and Merari.

(1Ch 6:17) And these be the names of the sonnes of Gershom, Libni, and Shimei.

(1Ch 6:18) And the sonnes of Kohath were Amram, and Izhar, and Hebron and Vzziel.

(1Ch 6:19) The sonnes of Merari, Mahli and Mushi: and these are the families of Leui concerning their fathers.

(1Ch 6:20) Of Gershom, Libni his sonne, Iahath his sonne, Zimmah his sonne,

(1Ch 6:21) Ioah his sonne, Iddo his sonne, Zerah his sonne, Ieaterai his sonne.

(1Ch 6:22) The sonnes of Kohath, Aminadab his sonne, Korah his sonne, Assir his sonne,

(d) Who seems to be called Izhar, (Exo 6:21).

(1Ch 6:23) Elkanah his sonne, and Ebiasaph his sonne, and Assir his sonne,

(1Ch 6:25) And the sonnes of Elkanah, Amasai, and Ahimoth.

(1Ch 6:29) The sonnes of Merari were Mahli, Libni his sonne, Shimei his sonne, Vzzah his sonne,

(1Ch 6:30) Shimea his sonne, Haggiah his sonne, Asaiah his sonne.

(1Ch 6:31) And these be they whom Dauid set for to sing in the house of the Lord, after that the Arke had rest.

(Notes Reference) And these [are they] whom David set over the service of song in the house of the LORD, after that the ark had (f) rest.

(f) After it was brought to the place where the temple would be built and was no longer carried to and fro.

(1Ch 6:32) And they ministred before the Tabernacle, euen the Tabernacle of the Congregation with singing, vntill Salomon had built ye house of the Lord in Ierusalem: then they continued in their office, according to their custome.

(1Ch 6:33) And these ministred with their children: of the sonnes of Kohath, Heman a singer, the sonne of Ioel, the sonne of Shemuel,

(1Ch 6:34) The sonne of Elkanah, the sonne of Ieroham, the sonne of Eliel, the sonne of Toah,

(1Ch 6:35) The sonne of Zuph, the sonne of Elkanah, the sonne of Mahath, the sonne of Amasai,

(1Ch 6:36) The sonne of Elkanah, the sonne of Ioel, the sonne of Azariah, the sonne of Zephaniah,

(1Ch 6:37) The sonne of Tahath, the sonne of Assir, the sonne of Ebiasaph, the sonne of Korah,

(1Ch 6:38) The sonne of Izhar, the sonne of Kohath, the sonne of Leui, the sonne of Israel.

(1Ch 6:39) And his brother Asaph stoode on his right hand: and Asaph was the sonne of Berechiah, the sonne of Shimea,

(1Ch 6:41) The sonne of Ethni, the sonne of Zerah, the sonne of Adaiah,

(1Ch 6:42) The sonne of Ethan, the sonne of Zimmah, the sonne of Shimei,

(1Ch 6:43) The sonne of Iahath, the sonne of Gershom, the sonne of Leui.

(1Ch 6:44) And their brethren the sonnes of Merari were on the left hand, euen Ethan the sonne of Kishi, the sonne of Abdi, the sonne of Malluch,

(1Ch 6:45) The sonne of Hashabiah, the sonne of Amaziah, the sonne of Hilkiah,

(1Ch 6:46) The sonne of Amzi, the sonne of Bani, the sonne of Shamer,

(1Ch 6:47) The sonne of Mahli, the sonne of Mushi, the sonne of Merari, the sonne of Leui.

(1Ch 6:48) And their brethren the Leuites were appointed vnto all the seruice of the Tabernacle of the house of God,

(Notes Reference) Their (i) brethren also the Levites [were] (k) appointed unto all manner of service of the tabernacle of the house of God.

(i) The Levites are called the singers brothers because they came from the same stock.

(k) Read (Num 4:4).

(1Ch 6:49) But Aaron and his sonnes burnt incense vpon the altar of burnt offering, and on the altar of incense, for all that was to do in the most holy place, and to make an atonement for Israel, according to all that Moses the seruant of God had commanded.

(1Ch 6:50) These are also the sonnes of Aaron, Eleazar his sonne, Phinehas his sonne, Abishua his sonne,

(1Ch 6:51) Bukki his sonne, Vzzi his sonne, Zerahiah his sonne,

(1Ch 6:52) Meraioth his sonne, Amariah his sonne, Ahitub his sonne,

(1Ch 6:53) Zadok his sonne, and Ahimaaz his sonne.

(1Ch 6:54) And these are the dwelling places of them throughout their townes and coastes, euen of the sonnes of Aaron for the familie of the Kohathites, for the lot was theirs.

(Notes Reference) Now these [are] their (l) dwelling places throughout their castles in their coasts, of the sons of Aaron, of the families of the Kohathites: for theirs was the (m) lot.

(l) Or, cities which were given to the Levites.

(m) They were first appointed, and prepared for.

(1Ch 6:55) So they gaue them Hebron in the lande of Iudah and the suburbes thereof rounde about it.

(n) Which was also called Kirjatharba, (Gen 23:2; Jos 21:11).

(1Ch 6:56) But the fielde of the citie, and the villages thereof they gaue to Caleb the sonne of Iephunneh.

(1Ch 6:57) And to the sonnes of Aaron they gaue the cities of Iudah for refuge, euen Hebron and Libna with their suburbes, and Iattir, and Eshtemoa with their suburbes,

(Notes Reference) And to the sons of Aaron they gave the cities of Judah, [namely], Hebron, [the city] of (o) refuge, and Libnah with her suburbs, and Jattir, and Eshtemoa, with their suburbs,

(o) That he that had killed a man might flee to it for help till his case was tried, (Deu 19:2).

(1Ch 6:58) And Hilen with her suburbes, and Debir with her suburbes,

(1Ch 6:59) And Ashan and her suburbes, and Bethshemesh and her suburbes:

(1Ch 6:60) And of the tribe of Beniamin, Geba and her suburbes, and Alemeth with her suburbes, and Anathoth with her suburbes: all their cities were thirteene cities by their families.

(Notes Reference) And out of the tribe of Benjamin; Geba with her suburbs, and (q) Alemeth with her suburbs, and Anathoth with her suburbs. All their cities throughout their families [were] thirteen cities.

(q) Or, Almon (Jos 21:18).

(1Ch 6:61) And vnto the sonnes of Kohath the remnant of the familie of the tribe, euen of the halfe tribe of the halfe of Manasseh, by lot ten cities.

(Notes Reference) And unto the sons of (r) Kohath, [which were] left of the family of that tribe, [were cities given] out of the half tribe, [namely, out of] the half [tribe] of Manasseh, by lot, ten cities.

(r) That is, they gave a portion to the Kohathites, who were the remnant of the tribe of Levi, out of the half tribe of Manasseh and out of Ephraim, (1Ch 6:66).

(1Ch 6:62) And to the sonnes of Gershom according to their families out of the tribe of Issachar, and out of the tribe of Asher, and out of the tribe of Naphtali, and out of the tribe of Manasseh in Bashan, thirteene cities.

(1Ch 6:63) Vnto the sonnes of Merari according to their families out of the tribe of Reuben, and out of the tribe of Gad, and out of the tribe of Zebulun, by lot twelue cities.

(1Ch 6:64) Thus the children of Israel gaue to the Leuites cities with their suburbes.

(1Ch 6:65) And they gaue by lot out of the tribe of the children of Iudah, and out of the tribe of the children of Simeon, and out of the tribe of the children of Beniamin, these cities, which they called by their names.

(1Ch 6:66) And they of the families of the sonnes of Kohath, had cities and their coastes out of the tribe of Ephraim.

(1Ch 6:67) And they gaue vnto them cities of refuge, Shechem in mount Ephraim, and her suburbes, and Gezer and her suburbes,

(1Ch 6:68) Iokmeam also and her suburbes, and Bethhoron with her suburbes,

(1Ch 6:69) And Aialon and her suburbes, and Gath Rimmon and her suburbes,

(1Ch 6:70) And out of the halfe tribe of Manasseh, Aner and her suburbes, and Bileam and her suburbes, for the families of the remnant of the sonnes of Kohath.

(1Ch 6:71) Vnto the sonnes of Gershom out of the familie of the halfe tribe of Manasseh, Golan in Bashan, and her suburbes, and Ashtaroth with her suburbes,

(Notes Reference) Unto the sons of (s) Gershom [were given] out of the family of the half tribe of Manasseh, Golan in Bashan with her suburbs, and Ashtaroth with her suburbs:

(s) Who in the first verse is also called Gershon.

(1Ch 6:72) And out of the tribe of Issachar, Kedesh and her suburbes, Daberath and her suburbes,

(1Ch 6:73) Ramoth also and her suburbes, and Anem with her suburbes,

(1Ch 6:74) And out of the tribe of Asher, Mashal and her suburbes, and Abdon and her suburbes,

(1Ch 6:75) And Hukok and her suburbs, and Rehob and her suburbes,

(1Ch 6:76) And out of the tribe of Naphtali, Kedesh in Galilea and her suburbes, and Hammon and her suburbes, and Kiriathaim and her suburbes.

(1Ch 6:77) Vnto the rest of the children of Merari were giuen out of ye tribe of Zebulun Rimmon and her suburbes, Tabor and her suburbes,

(1Ch 6:78) And on the other side Iorden by Iericho, euen on the Eastside of Iorden, out of the tribe of Reuben, Bezer in the wildernesse with her suburbes, and Iahzah with her suburbes,

(1Ch 6:79) And Kedemoth with her suburbes, and Mephaath with her suburbes,

(1Ch 6:80) And out of the tribe of Gad Ramoth in Gilead with her suburbes, and Mahanaim with her suburbes,

(1Ch 6:81) And Heshbon with her suburbes, and Iaazer with her suburbes.


Passage 2: Ezekiel 19

(Eze 19:1) Thou also, take vp a lamentation for the princes of Israel,

(Notes Reference) Moreover take thou up a lamentation for the (a) princes of Israel,

(a) That is, Jehoahaz and Jehoiakim, Josiah's sons, who for their pride and cruelty are compared to lions.

(Eze 19:2) And say, Wherefore lay thy mother as a lyonesse among the lyons? she nourished her yong ones among the lyons whelps,

(Notes Reference) And say, What [is] thy (b) mother? A lioness: she lay down among lions, she nourished her whelps among young lions.

(b) That is Jehoahaz's mother, or Jerusalem.

(Eze 19:3) And she brought vp one of her whelps, and it became a lyon, and it learned to catch the praye, and it deuoured men.

(Eze 19:4) The nations also heard of him, and he was taken in their nets, and they brought him in chaines vnto the land of Egypt.

(Notes Reference) The (c) nations also heard of him; he was taken in their pit, and they brought him with chains to the land of Egypt.

(c) By Pharaoh Nebo king of Egypt, (2Ki 23:33).

(Eze 19:5) Nowe when she sawe, that she had waited and her hope was lost, she tooke another of her whelps, and made him a lyon.

(Notes Reference) Now when she saw that she had waited, [and] her hope was lost, then she took another of her (d) whelps, [and] made him a young lion.

(d) Which was Jehoiakim.

(Eze 19:6) Which went among the lyons, and became a lyon, and learned to catch the praye, and he deuoured men.

(Notes Reference) And he went up and down among the lions, he became a young lion, and learned to catch the prey, [and] devoured (e) men.

(e) He slew the prophets and them that feared God and ravished their wives.

(Eze 19:7) And he knew their widowes, and he destroyed their cities, and the land was wasted, and all that was therein by the noyse of his roaring.

(Eze 19:8) Then the nations set against him on euery side of the countreys, and laide their nets for him: so he was taken in their pit.

(Notes Reference) Then the (f) nations set against him on every side from the provinces, and spread their net over him: he was taken in their pit.

(f) Nebuchadnezzar with his great army which was gathered from various nations.

(Eze 19:9) And they put him in prison and in chaines, and brought him to the King of Babel, and they put him in holdes, that his voyce should no more be heard vpon the mountaines of Israel.

(Eze 19:10) Thy mother is like a vine in thy blood, planted by the waters: she brought foorth fruite and branches by the abundant waters,

(Notes Reference) Thy (g) mother [is] like a vine in thy blood, planted by the waters: she was fruitful and full of branches by reason of many waters.

(g) He speaks this in the reproach of this wicked king, in whose blood, that is in the race of his predecessors, Jerusalem would have been blessed according to God's promise and flourished as a fruitful vine.

(Eze 19:11) And she had strong rods for the scepters of them that beare rule, and her stature was exalted among the branches, and she appeared in her height with the multitude of her branches.

(Eze 19:12) But she was plucked vp in wrath: she was cast downe to the ground, and the East winde dried vp her fruite: her branches were broken, and withered: as for the rod of her strength, the fire consumed it.

(Notes Reference) But she was plucked up in fury, she was cast down to the ground, and the (h) east wind dried up her fruit: her strong rods were broken and withered; the fire consumed them.

(h) Meaning, that the Chaldeans would destroy them as the east wind does the fruit of the vine.

(Eze 19:13) And now she is planted in the wildernes in a drie and thirstie ground.

(Eze 19:14) And fire is gone out of a rod of her branches, which hath deuoured her fruite, so that she hath no strong rod to be a scepter to rule: this is a lamentation and shalbe for a lamentation.

(Notes Reference) And fire hath gone out (i) of a rod of her branches, [which] hath devoured her fruit, so that she hath no strong rod [to be] a sceptre to rule. This [is] a lamentation, and shall be for a lamentation.

(i) Destruction is come by Zedekiah, who was the opportunity for this rebellion.


Passage 3: Luke 16

(Luk 16:1) And he sayde also vnto his disciples, There was a certaine riche man, which had a stewarde, and he was accused vnto him, that he wasted his goods.

(Notes Reference) And he said also unto his disciples, (1) There was a certain rich man, which had a steward; and the same was accused unto him that he had wasted his goods.

(1) Seeing that men often purchase friendship for themselves at the expense of others, we are to be ashamed if we do not please the Lord or procure the good will of our neighbours with the goods which the Lord has bestowed on us freely and liberally, making sure that by this means riches, which are often occasions of sin, are used for another end and purpose.

(Luk 16:2) And hee called him, and saide vnto him, Howe is it that I heare this of thee? Giue an accounts of thy stewardship: for thou maiest be no longer steward.

(Luk 16:3) Then the stewarde saide within himselfe, What shall I doe? for my master taketh away from me the stewardship. I cannot digge, and to begge I am ashamed.

(Luk 16:4) I knowe what I will doe, that when I am put out of the stewardship, they may receiue mee into their houses.

(Luk 16:5) Then called he vnto him euery one of his masters detters, and said vnto the first, Howe much owest thou vnto my master?

(Luk 16:6) And he said, An hudreth measures of oyle. And he saide to him, Take thy writing, and sitte downe quickely, and write fiftie.

(Luk 16:7) Then said he to another, How much owest thou? And hee sayde, An hundreth measures of wheate. Then he saide to him, Take thy writing, and write foure score.

(Luk 16:8) And the Lord commended the vniust stewarde, because he had done wisely. Wherefore the children of this worlde are in their generation wiser then the children of light.

(Notes Reference) And the lord commended (a) the unjust steward, because he had done wisely: for the (b) children of this world are in their generation wiser than the children of light.

(a) This parable does not approve the steward's evil dealing, for it was definitely theft: but parables are set forth to show a thing in a secret way, and as it were, to present the truth by means of an allegory, even though it may not be exact: so that by this parable Christ means to teach us that worldly men are more clever in the affairs of this world than the children of God are diligent for everlasting life.

(b) Men that are given to this present life, contrary to whom are the children of light: Paul calls the former carnal and the latter spiritual.

(Luk 16:9) And I say vnto you, Make you friends with the riches of iniquitie, that when ye shall want, they may receiue you into euerlasting habitations.

(Notes Reference) And I say unto you, Make to yourselves friends of the mammon (c) of unrighteousness; that, when ye fail, they may receive you into everlasting (d) habitations.

(c) This is not spoken of goods that are gotten wrongly, for God will have our bountifulness to the poor proceed and come from a good fountain: but he calls those things riches of iniquity which men use wickedly.

(d) That is, the poor Christians: for they are the inheritors of these habitations; Theophylact.

(Luk 16:10) He that is faithfull in the least, hee is also faithful in much: and he that is vniust in the least, is vniust also in much.

(Notes Reference) (2) He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much: and he that is unjust in the least is unjust also in much.

(2) We ought to take heed that we do not abuse our earthly work and duty and so be deprived of heavenly gifts: for how can they properly use spiritual gifts who abuse worldly things?

(Luk 16:11) If then ye haue not ben faithful in the wicked riches, who wil trust you in the true treasure?

(Notes Reference) If therefore ye have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the (c) true [riches]?

(c) That is, heavenly and true riches, which are contrary to material wealth which is worldly and quickly departing.

(Luk 16:12) And if ye haue not bene faithfull in another mans goods, who shall giue you that which is yours?

(Notes Reference) And if ye have not been faithful in that which is (f) another man's, who shall give you that which is your own?

(f) In worldly goods, which are called other men's because they are not ours, but rather entrusted to our care.

(Luk 16:13) No seruaunt can serue two masters: for either he shall hate the one, and loue the other: or els he shall leane to the one, and despise the other. Yee can not serue God and riches.

(Notes Reference) (3) No servant can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

(3) No man can love God and riches simultaneously.

(Luk 16:14) All these thinges heard the Pharises also which were couetous, and they scoffed at him.

(Luk 16:15) Then he sayde vnto them, Yee are they, which iustifie your selues before men: but God knoweth your heartes: for that which is highly esteemed among men, is abomination in the sight of God.

(Notes Reference) (4) And he said unto them, Ye are they which justify yourselves before men; but God knoweth your hearts: for that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of God.

(4) Our sins are not hidden to God, although they may be hidden to men, yea although they may be hidden to those who committed them.

(Luk 16:16) The Lawe and the Prophets endured vntill Iohn: and since that time the kingdome of God is preached, and euery man preasseth into it.

(Notes Reference) (5) The law and the prophets [were] until John: since that time the kingdom of God is preached, and every man presseth into it.

(5) The Pharisees despised the excellency of the new covenant with respect to the old, being ignorant of the perfect righteousness of the law; and Christ declares by the seventh commandment how they were false expounders of the law.

(Luk 16:17) Nowe it is more easie that heauen and earth shoulde passe away, then that one title of the Lawe should fall.

(Luk 16:18) Whosoeuer putteth away his wife, and marieth another, committeth adulterie: and whosoeuer marieth her that is put away from her husband, committeth adulterie.

(Notes Reference) Whosoever putteth away his wife, and marrieth another, committeth adultery: and whosoever marrieth her (g) that is put away from [her] husband committeth adultery.

(g) They that gather by this passage that a man cannot be married again after he has divorced his wife for adultery, while she lives, reason incorrectly: for Christ speaks of those divorces which the Jews had which were not because of adultery, for adulterers were put to death by the law.

(Luk 16:19) There was a certaine riche man, which was clothed in purple and fine linnen, and fared well and delicately euery day.

(Notes Reference) (6) There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in (h) purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day:

(6) The end of the poverty and misery of the godly will be everlasting joy, as the end of riotous living and the cruel pride of the rich will be everlasting misery, without any hope of mercy.

(h) Very gorgeously and sumptuously, for purple garments were costly, and this fine linen, which was a kind of linen that came out of Achaia, was as precious as gold.

(Luk 16:20) Also there was a certaine begger named Lazarus, which was laide at his gate full of sores,

(Luk 16:21) And desired to bee refreshed with the crommes that fell from the riche mans table: yea, and the dogges came and licked his sores.

(Luk 16:22) And it was so that the begger died, and was caried by the Angels into Abrahams bosome. The rich man also died, and was buried.

(Luk 16:23) And being in hell in torments, he lift vp his eyes, and sawe Abraham a farre off, and Lazarus in his bosome.

(Notes Reference) And in hell (i) he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.

(i) Heavenly and spiritual things are expressed and set forth using language fit for our senses.

(Luk 16:24) Then he cried, and saide, Father Abraham, haue mercie on mee, and sende Lazarus that hee may dippe the tip of his finger in water, and coole my tongue: for I am tormented in this flame.

(Luk 16:25) But Abraham saide, Sonne, remember that thou in thy life time receiuedst thy pleasures, and likewise Lazarus paines: now therefore is he comforted, and thou art tormented.

(Luk 16:26) Besides all this, betweene you and vs there is a great gulfe set, so that they which would goe from hence to you, can not: neither can they come from thence to vs.

(Luk 16:27) Then he said, I pray thee therfore, father, that thou wouldest sende him to my fathers house,

(7) Seeing that we have a most sure rule to live by, laid forth for us in the word of God, men seek rashly and vainly for other revelations.

(Luk 16:28) (For I haue fiue brethren) that he may testifie vnto them, least they also come into this place of torment.

(Luk 16:29) Abraham said vnto him, They haue Moses and the Prophets: let them heare them.

(Luk 16:30) And he sayde, Nay, father Abraham: but if one came vnto them from the dead, they will amend their liues.

(Luk 16:31) Then he saide vnto him, If they heare not Moses and the Prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rise from the dead againe.
