Passage 1: 1 Chronicles 7

(1Ch 7:1) And the sonnes of Issachar were Tola and Puah, Iashub, and Shimron, foure,

(Notes Reference) Now the sons of Issachar [were], Tola, and Puah, (a) Jashub, and Shimron, four.

(a) Who also is called Job, (Gen 46:13).

(1Ch 7:2) And the sonnes of Tola, Vzzi, and Rephaiah, and Ieriel, and Iahmai, and Iibsam, and Shemuel, heads in the housholdes of their fathers. Of Tola were valiant men of warre in their generations, whose nomber was in the dayes of Dauid two and twentie thousand, and sixe hundreth.

(Notes Reference) And the sons of Tola; Uzzi, and Rephaiah, and Jeriel, and Jahmai, and Jibsam, and Shemuel, heads of their father's house, [to wit], of Tola: [they were] valiant men of might in their generations; (b) whose number [was] in the days of David two and twenty thousand and six hundred.

(b) That is, their number was found to be this big when David counted the people, (2Sa 24:1).

(1Ch 7:3) And the sonne of Vzzi was Izrahaiah, and the sonnes of Izrahaiah, Michael, and Obadiah, and Ioel, and Isshiah, fiue men all princes.

(Notes Reference) And the sons of Uzzi; Izrahiah: and the sons of Izrahiah; Michael, and Obadiah, and Joel, Ishiah, (c) five: all of them chief men.

(c) Meaning, the four sons and the father.

(1Ch 7:4) And with them in their generations after the houshold of their fathers were bandes of men of warre for battel, sixe and thirtie thousand: for they had many wiues and children.

(1Ch 7:5) And their brethren among all the families of Issachar were valiant men of warre, rekoned in all by their genealogies foure score and seuen thousand.

(1Ch 7:6) The sonnes of Beniamin were Bela, and Becher, and Iediael, three.

(Notes Reference) [The sons] of Benjamin; Bela, and Becher, and (d) Jediael, (e) three.

(d) Also called Ashbel, (Gen 46:21; Num 26:38).

(e) Who were the chief: or else there were seven in all as it appears in (Gen 46:21).

(1Ch 7:7) And the sonnes of Bela, Ezbon, and Vzzi, and Vzziel, and Ierimoth, and Iri, fiue heads of the housholds of their fathers, valiant men of warre, and were rekoned by their genealogies, two and twentie thousand and thirtie and foure.

(1Ch 7:8) And the sonnes of Becher, Zemirah, and Ioash, and Eliezer, and Elioenai, and Omri, and Ierimoth, and Abiah, and Anathoth, and Alameth: all these were the sonnes of Becher.

(1Ch 7:9) And they were nombred by their genealogies according to their generations, and the chiefe of the houses of their fathers, valiant men of warre, twenty thousand and two hundreth.

(1Ch 7:10) And the sonne of Iediael was Bilhan, and the sonnes of Bilhan, Ieush, and Beniamin, and Ehud, and Chenaanah, and Zethan, and Tharshish, and Ahishahar.

(1Ch 7:11) All these were the sonnes of Iediael, chiefe of the fathers, valiant men of warre, seuenteene thousand and two hundreth, marching in battel aray to the warre.

(1Ch 7:12) And Shuppim, and Huppim were ye sonnes of Ir, but Hushim was the sonne of another.

(Notes Reference) Shuppim also, and Huppim, the children of Ir, [and] Hushim, the sons of (f) Aher.

(f) Meaning that he was not the son of Benjamin, but of Dan (Gen 46:23).

(1Ch 7:13) The sonnes of Naphtali, Iahziel, and Guni, and Iezer, and Shallum of the sonnes of Bilhah.

(Notes Reference) The sons of Naphtali; Jahziel, and Guni, and Jezer, and Shallum, (g) the sons of Bilhah.

(g) These came from Dan and Naphtali, who were the sons of Bilhah, (Gen 46:23-25).

(1Ch 7:14) The sonne of Manasseh was Ashriel whom she bare vnto him, but his concubine of Aram bare Machir the father of Gilead.

(1Ch 7:15) And Machir tooke to wife the sister of Huppim and Shuppim, and the name of their sister was Maachah. And the name of the second sonne was Zelophehad, and Zelophehad had daughters.

(1Ch 7:16) And Maachah the wife of Machir bare a sonne, and called his name Peresh, and the name of his brother was Sheresh: and his sonnes were Vlam and Rakem.

(1Ch 7:17) And the sonne of Vlam was Bedan. These were the sonnes of Gilead the sonne of Machir, the sonne of Manasseh.

(1Ch 7:18) And his sister Molecheth bare Ishod, and Abiezer, and Mahalah.

(Notes Reference) And (h) his sister Hammoleketh bare Ishod, and Abiezer, and Mahalah.

(h) Meaning, the sister of Gilead.

(1Ch 7:19) And the sonnes of Shemida were Ahian, and Shechem, and Likhi, and Aniam.

(1Ch 7:20) The sonnes also of Ephraim were Shuthelah, and Bered his sonne, and Tahath his sonne, and his sonne Eladah, and Tahath his sonne,

(1Ch 7:21) And Zabad his sonne, and Shuthelah his sonne, and Ezer, and Elead: and the men of Gath that were borne in the land, slewe them, because they came downe to take away their cattel.

(Notes Reference) And Zabad his son, and Shuthelah his son, and Ezer, and Elead, whom the men of (i) Gath [that were] born in [that] land slew, because they came down to take away their cattle.

(i) Which was one of the five principal cities of the Philistines and who slew the Ephraimites.

(1Ch 7:22) Therefore Ephraim their father mourned many dayes, and his brethren came to comfort him.

(1Ch 7:23) And when he went in to his wife, she conceiued, and bare him a sonne, and he called his name Beriah, because affliction was in his house.

(1Ch 7:24) And his daughter was Sherah, which built Beth-horon the nether, and the vpper, and Vzzen Sheerah.

(1Ch 7:25) And Rephah was his sonne, and Resheph, and Telah his sonne, and Tahan his sonne,

(Notes Reference) And Rephah [was] his (k) son, also Resheph, and Telah his son, and Tahan his son,

(k) That is, of Ephraim.

(1Ch 7:26) Laadan his sonne, Ammihud his sonne, Elishama his sonne,

(1Ch 7:27) Non his sonne, Iehoshua his sonne.

(1Ch 7:28) And their possessions and their habitations were Beth-el, and the villages thereof, and Eastward Naaran, and Westwarde Gezer with the villages thereof, Shechem also and the villages thereof, vnto Azzah, and the villages thereof,

(1Ch 7:29) And by the places of the children of Manasseh, Beth-shean and her villages, Taanach and her villages, Megiddo and her villages, Dor and her villages. In those dwelt the children of Ioseph the sonne of Israel.

(1Ch 7:30) The sonnes of Asher were Imnah, and Isuah, and Ishuai, and Beriah, and Serah their sister.

(1Ch 7:31) And the sonnes of Beriah, Heber, and Malchiel, which is the father of Birzauith.

(1Ch 7:32) And Heber begate Iaphlet, and Shomer, and Hotham, and Shuah their sister.

(1Ch 7:33) And the sonnes of Iaphlet were Pasach, and Bimhal, and Ashuath: these were the children of Iaphlet.

(1Ch 7:34) And the sonnes of Shamer, Ahi, and Rohgah, Iehubbah, and Aram.

(1Ch 7:35) And the sonnes of his brother Helem were Zophah, and Iimna, and Shelesh and Amal.

(1Ch 7:36) The sonnes of Zophah, Suah, and Harnepher, and Shual, and Beri, and Imrah,

(1Ch 7:37) Bezer and Hod, and Shamma, and Shilshah, and Ithran, and Beera.

(1Ch 7:38) And the sonnes of Iether, Iephunneh, and Pispa and Ara.

(1Ch 7:39) And the sonnes of Vlla, Harah, and Haniel, and Rizia.

(1Ch 7:40) All these were the children of Asher, the heads of their fathers houses, noble men, valiant men of warre and chiefe princes, and they were rekoned by their genealogies for warre and for battell to the nomber of sixe and twentie thousand men.


Passage 2: Ezekiel 20

(Eze 20:1) And in the seuenth yeere, in the fift moneth, the tenth day of the moneth, came certaine of the elders of Israel to enquire of the Lord, and sate before me.

(Notes Reference) And it came to pass in the (a) seventh year, in the fifth [month], the tenth [day] of the month, [that] certain of the elders of Israel came to enquire of the LORD, and sat before me.

(a) Of the captivity of Jeconiah.

(Eze 20:2) Then came the worde of the Lord vnto me, saying,

(Eze 20:3) Sonne of man, speake vnto the Elders of Israel, and say vnto them, Thus saith the Lord God, Are ye come to enquire of me? as I liue, sayth the Lord God, when I am asked, I wil not answer you.

(Eze 20:4) Wilt thou iudge them, sonne of man? wilt thou iudge them? cause them to vnderstand the abominations of their fathers,

(Notes Reference) Wilt thou judge them, son of man, wilt thou judge [them]? cause (b) them to know the abominations of their fathers:

(b) This declares the great leniency and patience of God who calls sinners to repentance before he condemns them.

(Eze 20:5) And say vnto them, Thus saith the Lord God, In the day when I chose Israel, and lift vp mine hand vnto the seede of the house of Iaakob, and made my selfe knowen vnto them in the land of Egypt, when I lift vp mine hand vnto them, and sayd, I am the Lord your God,

(Notes Reference) And say to them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; In the day when I chose Israel, and (c) lifted up my hand to the seed of the house of Jacob, and made myself known to them in the land of Egypt, when I lifted up my hand to them, saying, I [am] the LORD your God;

(c) I swore that I would be their God, which manner of oath was observed from all antiquity, where they used to lift up their hands toward the heavens, acknowledging God to be the author of truth and the defender of it, and also the judge of the heart, wishing that he would take vengeance, if they concealed anything which they knew to be truth.

(Eze 20:6) In the day that I lift vp mine hand vnto them to bring them forth of the land of Egypt, into a land that I had prouided for them, flowing with milke and hony which is pleasant among all lands,

(Eze 20:7) Then sayd I vnto them, Let euery man cast away the abominations of his eyes, and defile not your selues with the idols of Egypt: for I am the Lord your God.

(Notes Reference) Then said I to them, Cast ye away every man the abominations of his eyes, (d) and defile not yourselves with the idols of Egypt: I [am] the LORD your God.

(d) God had forbidden them to make mention of the idols, (Exo 23:13; Psa 16:4).

(Eze 20:8) But they rebelled against me, and would not heare me: for none cast away the abominations of their eyes, neither did they forsake the idoles of Egypt: then I thought to powre out mine indignation vpon them, and to accomplish my wrath against them in the mids of the land of Egypt.

(Notes Reference) But they rebelled against me, and would not hearken to me: they did not every man cast away the abominations of (e) their eyes, neither did they forsake the idols of Egypt: then I said, I will pour out my fury upon them, to accomplish my anger against them in the midst of the land of Egypt.

(e) Which declares the wickedness of man's heart, who judge God's service by their eyes and outward senses.

(Eze 20:9) But I had respect to my Name, that it should not be polluted before the heathen, among whome they were, and in whose sight I made my selfe knowen vnto them in bringing them forth of the land of Egypt.

(Notes Reference) But I wrought for my (f) name's sake, that it should not be profaned before the nations, among whom they [were], in whose sight I made myself known to them, in bringing them forth from the land of Egypt.

(f) God had ever this respect to his glory, that he would not have evil spoken of his Name among the Gentiles for the punishment that his people deserved, in confidence of which the godly ever prayed, as in (Exo 32:12; Num 14:13).

(Eze 20:10) Nowe I caried them out of the land of Egypt, and brought them into the wildernes.

(Eze 20:11) And I gaue them my statutes, and declared my iudgements vnto them, which if a man doe, he shall liue in them.

(Eze 20:12) Moreouer I gaue them also my Sabbaths to be a signe betweene me and them, that they might knowe that I am the Lord, that sanctifie them.

(Eze 20:13) But the house of Israel rebelled against me in the wildernes: they walked not in my statutes, and they cast away my iudgements, which if a man doe, he shall liue in them, and my Sabbaths haue they greatly polluted: then I thought to powre out mine indignation vpon them in the wildernes to consume them,

(Eze 20:14) But I had respect to my Name, that it shoulde not bee polluted before the heathen in whose sight I brought them out.

(Notes Reference) But I wrought for my name's sake, that it should not be profaned before the (g) nations, in whose sight I brought them out.

(g) Who might by it take an opportunity to blaspheme my Name and to accuse me of lack of ability, or else that I had sought a means to destroy them more conveniently.

(Eze 20:15) Yet neuerthelesse, I lift vp mine hande vnto them in the wildernes that I would not bring them into the lande, which I had giuen them, flowing with milke and hony, which was pleasant aboue all landes,

(Eze 20:16) Because they cast away my iudgments, and walked not in my statutes, but haue polluted my Sabbaths: for their heart went after their idoles.

(Notes Reference) Because they despised my judgments, and walked not in my statutes, but profaned my (h) sabbaths: for their heart went after their idols.

(h) That is, my true religion, which I had commanded them, and gave themselves to serve me according to their own fantasies.

(Eze 20:17) Neuerthelesse, mine eye spared them, that I would not destroye them, neither would I consume them in the wildernes.

(Eze 20:18) But I said vnto their children in the wildernes, Walke ye not in the ordinances of your fathers, neither obserue their maners, nor defile your selues with their idoles.

(Notes Reference) But I said to their children in the wilderness, Walk ye not in the statutes of your (i) fathers, neither observe their judgments, nor defile yourselves with their idols:

(i) By which the Holy Spirit confuses them that say that they will follow the religion and example of their fathers, and not measure their doings by God's word whether they are approved by it or not.

(Eze 20:19) I am the Lord your God: walke in my statutes, and keepe my iudgements and doe them,

(Eze 20:20) And sanctifie my Sabbaths, and they shall bee a signe betweene mee and you, that ye may knowe that I am the Lord your God.

(Eze 20:21) Notwithstanding the children rebelled against mee: they walked not in my statutes, nor kept my iudgements to doe them, which if a man doe, hee shall liue in them, but they polluted my Sabbaths: then I thought to powre out mine indignation vpon them, and to accomplish my wrath against them in the wildernes.

(Eze 20:22) Neuerthelesse I withdrew mine hand and had respect to my Name that it should not be polluted before the heathen, in whose sight I brought them foorth.

(Eze 20:23) Yet I lift vp mine hande vnto them in the wildernes, that I would scatter them among the heathen, and disperse them through the countreys,

(Eze 20:24) Because they had not executed my iudgements, but had cast away my statutes and had polluted my Sabbaths, and their eyes were after their fathers idoles.

(Notes Reference) Because they had not executed my judgments, but had despised my statutes, and had profaned my sabbaths, and their eyes were after (k) their fathers' idols.

(k) Meaning that they set their delight on them.

(Eze 20:25) Wherefore I gaue them also statutes that were not good, and iudgements, wherein they should not liue.

(Notes Reference) Wherefore I gave (l) them also statutes [that were] not good, and judgments by which they should not live;

(l) Because they would not obey my laws, I gave them up to themselves that they should obey their own fantasies, as in (Eze 20:39; Rom 1:21, Rom 1:24).

(Eze 20:26) And I polluted them in their owne giftes in that they caused to passe by the fire all that first openeth ye wombe, that I might destroy them, to the ende, that they might know that I am ye Lord.

(Notes Reference) And I polluted them in their own (m) gifts, in that they caused to pass through [the fire] all the firstborn, that I might make them desolate, to the end that they might know that I [am] the LORD.

(m) I condemned those things, and counted them as abominable, which they thought had been excellent and to have declared most zeal, (Luk 16:15) for that which God required as most excellent they gave to their idols.

(Eze 20:27) Therefore, sonne of man, speake vnto the house of Israel, and say vnto them, Thus saith the Lord God, Yet in this your fathers haue blasphemed me, though they had before grieuously transgressed against me.

(Eze 20:28) For when I had brought them into the land, for the which I lifted vp mine hand to giue it to them, then they saw euery hie hill, and all the thicke trees, and they offred there their sacrifices, and there they presented their offering of prouocation: there also they made their sweete sauour, and powred out there their drinke offerings.

(Notes Reference) (n) [For] when I had brought them into the land, [for] which I lifted up my hand to give it to them, then they saw every high hill, and all the thick trees, and they offered there their sacrifices, and there they presented the provocation of their offering: there also they made their sweet savour, and poured out there their drink offerings.

(n) Not only in the wilderness, when I brought them out of Egypt, but since I placed them in this land: which declares how prompt man's heart is to idolatry seeing that by no admonitions can he be drawn back.

(Eze 20:29) Then I saide vnto them, What is the hie place whereunto ye goe? And the name thereof was called Bamah vnto this day.

(Notes Reference) Then I said to them, What [is] the high place to which ye go? And its name is called (o) Bamah to this day.

(o) Which signifies a high place, declaring that they vaunted themselves of their idolatry and were not ashamed of it, though God had commanded them expressly that they should have no altar lifted on high by stairs, (Exo 20:26).

(Eze 20:30) Wherefore, say vnto the house of Israel, Thus saith the Lord God, Are ye not polluted after the maner of your fathers? and commit ye not whoredome after their abominations?

(Eze 20:31) For when you offer your giftes, and make your sonnes to passe through the fire, you pollute your selues with all your idoles vnto this day: shall I answere you when I am asked, O house of Israel? As I liue, saith the Lord God, I wil not answere you when I am asked.

(Notes Reference) For when ye offer your gifts, when ye make your sons to pass through the fire, ye pollute yourselves with all your idols, even to this day: and shall I be enquired of by you, O house of Israel? [As] I live, saith the Lord GOD, (p) I will not be enquired of by you.

(p) He shows that the ingratitude of the people deserves that God should cut them off, and that they should not have the comfort of his word.

(Eze 20:32) Neither shall that be done that commeth into your minde: for ye say, We wil be as the heathen, and as the families of the countreys, and serue wood, and stone.

(Notes Reference) And that which cometh into your mind shall not be at all, that ye say, We will be as the nations, as the families of the countries, to serve wood and (q) stone.

(q) He declares that man by nature is wholly enemy to God, and to his own salvation, and therefore God calls him to the right way, partly by chastising but chiefly by his mercy in forgiving his rebellion and wickedness.

(Eze 20:33) As I liue, saith the Lord God, I will surely rule you with a mightie hand, and with a stretched out arme, and in my wrath powred out,

(Eze 20:34) And will bring you from the people, and will gather you out of the countreys, wherein ye are scattered, with a mighty hand, and with a stretched out arme, and in my wrath powred out,

(Eze 20:35) And I will bring you into the wildernes of the people, and there wil I pleade with you face to face.

(Notes Reference) And I will bring you into the (r) wilderness of the people, and there will I enter into judgment with you face to face.

(r) I will bring you among strange nations as into a wilderness and there will visit you, and so call you to repentance and then bring the godly home again, (Isa 65:9).

(Eze 20:36) Like as I pleaded with your fathers in the wildernes of the lande of Egypt, so will I pleade with you, saith the Lord God.

(Eze 20:37) And I wil cause you to passe vnder the rod, and wil bring you into the bond of the couenant.

(Eze 20:38) And I wil chuse out from among you the rebels, and them that transgresse against mee: I will bring them out of the land where they dwel, and they shall not enter into the lande of Israel, and you shall knowe that I am the Lord.

(Notes Reference) And I will (s) purge out from among you the rebels, and them that transgress against me: I will bring them forth out of the country where they sojourn, and they shall not enter into the land of Israel: and ye shall know that I [am] the LORD.

(s) Signifying that he will not burn the corn with the chaff, but chose out the wicked to punish them when he will spare his.

(Eze 20:39) As for you, O house of Israel, thus saith the Lord God, Goe you, and serue euery one his idole, seeing that ye will not obey me, and pollute mine holy Name no more with your giftes and with your idoles.

(Notes Reference) As for you, O house of Israel, thus saith the Lord GOD; (t) Go ye, serve ye every one his idols, and after this [also], if ye will not hearken to me: but profane ye my holy name no more with your gifts, and with your idols.

(t) This is spoken to the hypocrites.

(Eze 20:40) For in mine holy mountaine, euen in the hie mountaine of Israel, saith the Lord God, there shall all the house of Israel, and all in the lande, serue me: there will I accept them, and there will I require your offrings and the first fruites of your oblations, with all your holy things.

(Eze 20:41) I will accept your sweete sauour, when I bring you from the people, and gather you out of the countreys, wherein ye haue bene scattered, that I may be sanctified in you before ye heathen.

(Eze 20:42) And ye shall knowe, that I am the Lord, when I shall bring you into the land of Israel, into the land, for the which I lifted vp mine hande to giue it to your fathers.

(Eze 20:43) And there shall ye remember your wayes, and all your workes, wherein ye haue bene defiled, and ye shall iudge your selues worthy to be cut off, for all your euils, that ye haue committed.

(Notes Reference) And there shall ye remember your ways, and all your doings, in which ye have been defiled; and ye (u) shall lothe yourselves in your own sight for all your evils that ye have committed.

(u) Your own consciences will convict you after you have felt my mercies.

(Eze 20:44) And ye shall knowe, that I am the Lord, when I haue respect vnto you for my Names sake, and not after your wicked wayes, nor according to your corrupt workes, O ye house of Israel, saith the Lord God.

(Eze 20:45) Moreouer, the worde of the Lord came vnto me, saying,

(Eze 20:46) Sonne of man, set thy face toward the way of Teman, and drop thy word toward the South, and prophecie towarde the forest of the fielde of the South,

(Notes Reference) Son of man, set thy face toward the south, and drop [thy word] toward (x) the south, and prophesy against the forest of the south field;

(x) For Judah stood south from Babylon.

(Eze 20:47) And say to the forest of the South, Heare the worde of the Lord: thus saith the Lord God, Beholde, I will kindle a fire in thee, and it shall deuoure all the greene wood in thee, and all the drie wood: the continuall flame shall not bee quenched, and euery face from the South to the North shall be burnt therein.

(Notes Reference) And say to the forest of the south, Hear the word of the LORD; Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I will kindle a fire in thee, and it shall devour every (y) green tree in thee, and every dry tree: the blazing flame shall not be quenched, and all faces from the south to the north shall be burned in it.

(y) Both strong and weak in Jerusalem.

(Eze 20:48) And all flesh shall see, that I the Lord haue kindled it, and it shall not bee quenched.

(Eze 20:49) Then saide I, Ah Lord God, they say of me, Doeth not he speake parables?

(Notes Reference) Then said I, Ah Lord GOD! they say of me, Doth he not speak (z) parables?

(z) The people said that the prophet spoke darkly: therefore he desires the Lord to give them a plain declaration of it.


Passage 3: Luke 17

(Luk 17:1) Then said he to his disciples, It can not be auoided, but that offences will come, but wo be to him by whome they come.

(Notes Reference) Then said he unto the disciples, (1) It is impossible but that offences will come: but woe [unto him], through whom they come!

(1) The Church is of necessity subject to offences, but the Lord will not suffer them unpunished, if any of the least be offended.

(Luk 17:2) It is better for him that a great milstone were hanged about his necke, and that he were cast into ye sea, then that he should offende one of these litle ones.

(Luk 17:3) Take heede to your selues: if thy brother trespasse against thee, rebuke him: and if hee repent, forgiue him.

(Notes Reference) (2) Take heed to yourselves: If thy brother trespass against thee, rebuke him; and if he repent, forgive him.

(2) Our reprehensions must be just and proceed from love and charity.

(Luk 17:4) And though he sinne against thee seuen times in a day, and seuen times in a day turne againe to thee, saying, It repenteth mee, thou shalt forgiue him.

(Luk 17:5) And the Apostles saide vnto the Lord, Increase our faith.

(Notes Reference) (3) And the apostles said unto the Lord, Increase our faith.

(3) God will never be utterly lacking to the godly (although he may not be as thorough with them as they wish) even in those difficulties which cannot be overcome by man's reason.

(Luk 17:6) And the Lord said, If ye had faith, as much as is a graine of mustard seede, and should say vnto this mulberie tree, Plucke thy selfe vp by the rootes, and plant thy selfe in the sea, it should euen obey you.

(Notes Reference) And the Lord said, If ye had faith as (a) a grain of mustard seed, ye might say unto this sycamine tree, Be thou plucked up by the root, and be thou planted in the sea; and it should obey you.

(a) If you had no more faith, but the quantity of the grain of mustard seed.

(Luk 17:7) Who is it also of you, that hauing a seruant plowing or feeding cattell, woulde say vnto him by and by, when hee were come from the fielde, Goe, and sit downe at table?

(Notes Reference) (4) But which of you, having a servant plowing or feeding cattle, will say unto him by and by, when he is come from the field, Go and sit down to meat?

(4) Seeing that God may rightfully claim for himself both us and all that is ours, he cannot be indebted to us for anything, although we labour mightily until we die.

(Luk 17:8) And woulde not rather say to him, Dresse wherewith I may suppe, and girde thy selfe, and serue mee, till I haue eaten and drunken, and afterward eate thou, and drinke thou?

(Luk 17:9) Doeth he thanke that seruant, because hee did that which was commanded vnto him? I trowe not.

(Luk 17:10) So likewise yee, when yee haue done all those things, which are commanded you, say, We are vnprofitable seruants: wee haue done that which was our duetie to doe.

(Notes Reference) (5) So likewise ye, when ye shall have done all those things which are commanded you, say, We are unprofitable servants: we have done that which was our duty to do.

(5) No matter how perfectly we may keep the law, it deserves no reward.

(Luk 17:11) And so it was when he went to Hierusalem, that he passed through the middes of Samaria, and Galile.

(Notes Reference) (6) And it came to pass, as he went to Jerusalem, that he passed through the midst of Samaria and Galilee.

(6) Christ does good even to those who will be unthankful, but the benefits of God to salvation only profit those who are thankful.

(Luk 17:12) And as hee entred into a certaine towne, there met him tenne men that were lepers, which stoode a farre off.

(Luk 17:13) And they lift vp their voyces and saide, Iesus, Master, haue mercie on vs.

(Luk 17:14) And when he saw them, he said vnto them, Goe, shewe your selues vnto the Priestes. And it came to passe, that as they went, they were clensed.

(Luk 17:15) Then one of them, when hee sawe that hee, was healed, turned backe, and with a loude voyce praised God,

(Luk 17:16) And fell downe on his face at his feete, and gaue him thankes: and he was a Samaritan.

(Luk 17:17) And Iesus answered, and said, Are there not tenne clensed? but where are the nine?

(Luk 17:18) There is none founde that returned to giue God praise, saue this stranger.

(Luk 17:19) And he saide vnto him, Arise, goe thy way, thy faith hath saued thee.

(Luk 17:20) And when hee was demaunded of the Pharises, when the kingdome of God shoulde come, he answered them, and said, The kingdome of God commeth not with obseruation.

(Notes Reference) (7) And when he was demanded of the Pharisees, when the kingdom of God should come, he answered them and said, The kingdom of God cometh not with (b) observation:

(7) The kingdom of God is not discerned by many although it is most present before their eyes, because they foolishly persuade themselves that it is to come with outward pomp.

(b) With any outward pomp and show of majesty to be known by: for there were still many plain and evident tokens by which men might have understood that Christ was the Messiah, whose kingdom had been so long looked for: but he speaks in this place of those signs which the Pharisees dreamed of, who looked for an earthly Messianic kingdom.

(Luk 17:21) Neither shall men say, Loe here, or lo there: for behold, the kingdome of God is within you.

(Notes Reference) Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is (c) within you.

(c) You look around for the Messiah as though he were absent, but he is amongst you in the midst of you.

(Luk 17:22) And he saide vnto the disciples, The dayes will come, when ye shall desire to see one of the dayes of the Sonne of man, and ye shall not see it.

(Notes Reference) (8) And he said unto the disciples, The days will come, when ye shall desire to see (d) one of the days of the Son of man, and ye shall not see [it].

(8) We often neglect those things when they are present which we afterward desire when they are gone, but in vain.

(d) The time will come when you will seek for the Son of Man with great sorrow of heart, and will not find him.

(Luk 17:23) Then they shall say to you, Behold here, or beholde there: but goe not thither, neither follow them.

(Notes Reference) (9) And they shall say to you, See here; or, see there: go not after [them], nor follow [them].

(9) Christ forewarns us that false Christs will come, and that his glory will suddenly be spread far and wide through the world after the shame of the cross is put out and extinguished.

(Luk 17:24) For as the lightening that lighteneth out of the one part vnder heauen, shineth vnto the other part vnder heauen, so shall the Sonne of man be in his day.

(Luk 17:25) But first must he suffer many things, and be reprooued of this generation.

(Luk 17:26) And as it was in the dayes of Noe, so shall it be in the dayes of the Sonne of man.

(Notes Reference) (10) And as it was in the days of Noe, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man.

(10) The world will be taken by surprise with the sudden judgment of God, and therefore the faithful ought to continually watch.

(Luk 17:27) They ate, they dranke, they married wiues, and gaue in marriage vnto the day that Noe went into the Arke: and the flood came, and destroyed them all.

(Luk 17:28) Likewise also, as it was in the dayes of Lot: they ate, they dranke, they bought, they solde, they planted, they built.

(Luk 17:29) But in the day that Lot went out of Sodom, it rained fire and brimstone from heauen, and destroyed them all.

(Luk 17:30) After these ensamples shall it be in the day when the Sonne of man is reueiled.

(Luk 17:31) At that day hee that is vpon the house, and his stuffe in ye house, let him not come downe to take it out: and he that is in the fielde likewise, let him not turne backe to that he left behinde.

(Notes Reference) (11) In that day, he which shall be upon the housetop, and his stuff in the house, let him not come down to take it away: and he that is in the field, let him likewise not return back.

(11) We must pay careful attention that neither distrust nor the enticements of this world, nor any consideration of friendship hinder us in the least way.

(Luk 17:32) Remember Lots wife.

(Luk 17:33) Whosoeuer will seeke to saue his soule, shall loose it: and whosoeuer shall loose it, shall get it life.

(Notes Reference) Whosoever shall seek to save his life shall lose it; and whosoever shall lose his life shall (e) preserve it.

(e) That is, will save it, as Matthew expounds it: for the life that is spoken of here is everlasting salvation.

(Luk 17:34) I tell you, in that night there shall be two in one bed: the one shalbe receiued, and the other shalbe left.

(Luk 17:35) Two women shalbe grinding together: the one shalbe taken, and the other shalbe left.

(Luk 17:36) Two shalbe in the fielde: one shalbe receiued, and another shalbe left.

(Luk 17:37) And they answered, and saide to him, Where, Lord? And he said vnto them, Wheresoeuer the body is, thither shall also the eagles bee gathered together.

(Notes Reference) (12) And they answered and said unto him, Where, Lord? And he said unto them, Wheresoever the body [is], thither will the eagles be gathered together.

(12) The only way to continue is to cleave to Christ.
